i just had a very interesting thought… if we lose one of our big 4 players to an expansion team would you, as GM, trade our first round pick to get that player back? because idk if it’s just me but i think i would. obv it would depend on where that pick is (probably either 5 or 9) but we know that these 4 players are integral to this team and i think that whatever happens, you fight like hell to keep it intact. genuinely is this delusional or would this be an average danielle marmer move

I think the main thoughts I have with expansion protection is like. Look you need a top pair caliber center, a high end starting goalie, and a number one defender. And if you’re not protecting those three positions, you need to be prepared for them to be taken and have an answer for where you’ll get your replacement.

Goaltenders are weird, because even with expansion there’s still a lot of high end goaltenders out there especially after the draft, so with the exception of Philips / desbiens / Frankel , if you lose your goaltender you can probably find another high end goaltender out there, whether it’s brändli / Campbell / Chan / nördstrom / Pasiechnyk in the draft, free agency or something else.

Defenders especially top end defenders are, imo, one of the most important positions in the league, but there are also a large influx of top end defenders coming into the league this year, more than top end forwards. There are five defenders I can see going in the first round, so depending on where you pick you may feel more comfortable not protecting a defender

Finally it’s the top center, which I think is the hardest position to fill. Janecke and wunder are the two expected to go very early, maybe biederman, and if I was a gm janecke is the only one I’d feel comfortable penciling in for 1C on day one (not that I don’t think wunder and biederman can be top six centers, but if they do it’ll take time to adjust, and even that I think 2C is more realistic.) imo your #1 center caliber players (meaning you can put them on your first line and with the appropriate depth feel right about it) right now are nurse, carpenter, Müller, Poulin, O’Brien, kaltounková, Jenner, Heise, Pannek in no order, with turnbull and Tapani on the cusp (fine as 1Cs but preferable as high end 2Cs.) I think this is most relevant for Boston, who has to make the Winn v Müller decision, and id choose Müller for a few reasons but primarily because it is going to be very, very hard to replace her, and you’re already likely losing Tapani who’s a free agent

#i’m so glad i saw this because it’s basically my thoughts exactly but without my extreme bias lmao #even if it shakes out that we get 5OA janecke is almost definitely off the board by then so that shouldn’t be a gamble we’re taking either #i just get so annoyed when i see people devaluing her as if it’s easy to find a replacement… so thank u op for this breakdown it’s great
