James put a hand over his heart, gasping ever so lightly. “Miss Narcissa, I am hurt. Well and truly wounded. The idea of me spiking the punch bowl with all of these Significant and Important members of the magical community in attendance, including my own mother. The idea; how dare you? For shame Miss Narcissa. For shame.”
His solemn expression only lasted a millisecond more, as James was nothing if not constantly amusing by himself. He cleared his throat and ran a hand through his hair. “No, but seriously, I didn’t actually spike it. I was about to,” he gave the flask in his hand a small shake to show that it was still fairly full before putting it back in his pocket, “but didn’t yet. So by all means, get your spiked free drink quickly, but I might want to wait until I do my magic, because it is pretty gross. Just saying.”
Respect seemed a foreign concept to the marauder. The chance that he’d offer it to the pinnacles of England’s wizarding community, or even to his own mother, was far too slim for Narcissa to entertain. The best tool to predict one’s future actions was not a crystal ball or empty cup of tea leaves, as she’d consider herself a fool to put faith in methods so unfounded, but in a thorough analysis of one’s past. James Potter’s history certainly preceded him. “Somehow I doubt you’d allow your mother to stop you from doing.. whatever it is you do."
Her eyes narrowed, fixated on the silver flask he shook proudly in his hand. The liquor sloshed from side to side, assuring her the bowl truly was safe — at least, for now. She reached forward for the ladle, taking it in her palm before pausing. Perhaps this was what he wanted for her to think. “And how am I to know one of your little friends didn’t get to it already?” she asked, voice cautious. What a prank that would be — to lull the pureblooded princess into a sense of false security, then pump her full of noxious punch that’d have her making a fool of herself in front of the Ministry’s most elite. No, she wouldn’t be fooled so easily — not tonight, and not by him.
