THE BEST BY FAR IS YOU
It was late-- definitely later than she should be out on the Hogwarts grounds. But, once again, she had been plagued by a restless night and craved the fresh air. She didn't much have a destination and had found herself aimlessly at the outskirts of the Forbidden Forest. As she walked just outside the trees, she couldn't help but shudder at the gloomy appearance that the forest seemed to hold. She was just about to move away from them when she heard a loud SNAP of a twig behind her. The blonde turned on her heel to face whomever ( or whatever ) had followed her. Her eyes squinted as the light from her wand now flooded the area behind her and she tried to make out the figure that stood against the light. " If you were planning to sneak up on me, then you probably should have watched where you stepped, " She spoke.
░▌BLACK, A.
“I think everyone was far too excited in class about the prospect of successfully brewing love potions. Is romance truly that dead?”
" It is honestly nothing but a fantasy if you ask me. "
░▌BLACK, B.
“Then why’d you stop?” Bella says, eyebrows arched. “You’ve got nowhere more important to be than here, darling.” She turns to face Octavia, blue eyes flashing dangerously before she smiles, cruel and uninviting. “After all, we wouldn’t want your parents getting wind of you displeasing the eldest Black, would we?” It’s a low blow, but Bella’s not above using it. She’s got no reason to keep Octavia in her presence other than pure boredom, but still. She likes watching the younger girl squirm.
" Not that I need to explain, but I had thought that you might be a Prefect, " She responded with a shrug of her shoulders. Sighing, she immediately crossed her arms over her chest as the girl continued to speak. She had to work to refrain from rolling her eyes at the next statements. The others inflation of self-importance certainly irritated her, but she knew that she shouldn't allow that to show for more than one reason. " Actually, at the moment, I think that they are far more concerned about my impression on potential suitors than they would be with my impression on you, Bellatrix, " She responded cooly.
He understood what this was about. Naturally, being Fabian Prewett meant had little to no experience with doubts and what it felt to choose one ideal over other, but this was Octavia, one of the few people that was by his side ever since the two met, and he understood what was holding her back. She, very unlike him, avoided meeting her choices until she absolutely had to face them and, while this habit evoked his down-to-bussiness & decisive attitude, she was the only person he hesitated to be blunt with. Not because he didn’t care for her as he did for his other friends ( who were often victims to his tendency to go long way to set things in order, fix complicated emotions & put an end to pointless conflicts before they happened ), but because it was easy to keep emotions and differences in mind with her, easy to see she didn’t need him to list solutions & give advice. Instead, she needed him to be patient and stay a source of understanding, so he tried to be that. It was far from easy, though, her eventual refusal to pursue the topic provoking a hint of uneasiness to blossom in usually calm boy. He knew Octavia won’t be fighting once she leaves Hogwarts, knew he won’t meet her on the battlefield once all is said and done, but perhaps this apathy was worse. Worse because he won’t be able to save her if she makes the wrong choice ( or right? he didn’t know, he just wanted her to be happy ), worse because then she won’t have anyone to rely on besides her family.
Perhaps what irritated him the most was that he ( if he was being honest with himself, which he wasn’t ) would have as hard time as she did if he were to be faced with such decision. No sacrifice is too great if it’s made for family, he once said to his father, expecting to meet nothing but approval from the man in return and getting a concerned expression instead. And what if the family itself is rotten? his father retorted, and that on its own was a hard concept for Fabian to understand. How could he when his family was nothing but perfect? Unsure what to do next, he allowed her to lead him to the dance floor without complaint, automatically resting his hands on her waist and matching her rhythm without second thought. “ Fine, but — later, ‘kay? It doesn’t have to be with me, but talking helps. ” Placing a kiss on the top of her gold curls, he tried to bring back the titles of said books and let go of his uncertainty, find way back to the easiness that they previously shared. “ Um, let me see. I got carried away with aeronautical engineering for a while - did you know Muggles fly in these metal machines and go to space with them? Then, hm, I read The Travels of Marco Polo, which is the greatest but now I want to go to China.”
" I will, " She responded with a small nod. Truthfully, she didn't know if she was lying about that or not. If she did allow herself to open up again, she didn't know what good it would actually do. It was up to her alone to change her fate, after all. Talking about it wouldn't do any good if she wasn't willing to take some action as well. Her expression quickly changed at his comment and lightened considerably. Blue orbs sparkled with excitement and interest as she moved her head from his chest to meet his gaze. " Really? " She questioned with excitement. How fascinating to hear. She didn't think that wizards had even mastered the capability of going to space. What a concept--to be amongest the stars. " So.. you're saying that they can see the stars up close? " She questioned, raising a brow. The Travels of Marco Polo. Now, that was a familiar title. It was quite typical for Octavia to read texts that featured travelers. After all, that was her deepest desire. She desired more than anything to travel the world and see all the fascinating sights that she'd only witnessed in books. " Actually-- I found that one quite interesting. But, then again, I've always been fond about hearing about the places that I've never been, "

“You should watch out,” Bella says matter-of-factly, lips pressed together as she regards the other girl. “Those with thick skin can survive the night, but I’m afraid yours is as thin as parchment.”
" Frankly, I don't think that you have much knowledge or opinion on what I'm capable of surviving, Bellatrix, " She responded calmly though irritance flashed behind her eyes. Sighing, she ran a hand through her blonde curls almost impatiently. " I don't have much time for your mind games tonight. So, if you'll excuse me, "

“Right. Well they’re all up in my dorm, so let’s get walking.” Quite comfortable with the fifth year, Elinor took Octavia’s hand and led her through the corridors to the Gryffindor tower. “I managed to get a few good shots of Emmeline, d’you think she’d like them? She looked so lovely last night. I mean, ya know, more than usual anyway.” Elinor quickly said the password and led Octavia up to the Gryffindor seventh year girls’ room. Bag was tossed onto bed with little care, shoes were kicked off, and Elinor jumped onto her bed to lean over to yank her trunk out from under her bed. From there she pulled out a photo album. Prettier though they may be, Elinor didn’t often make scrapbooks; too much hassle. “Here,” she announced as she opened the album to where the ball started. “I only developed my favorites so far but trust me there’s plenty more.”
" Ah yes, I'm sure she'd love them. " She responded with a nod of her head. In that moment, she recalled how beautiful that Emmeline looked at the ball and smiled softly. It was a rarity that her raven-haired friend allowed herself to get dolled up. There were things that Emmeline valued far more than vanity. So, it was certainly a treat for the Hogwarts population to see her dolled up. The blonde followed Elinor into the Gryffindor Common Room then up to her dorm. After Elinor jumped on the bed, she carefully positioned herself beside her and waited for the album to be pulled out. Her blue eyes seemed to light up when the photos were in front of her. It seemed that they came from a Muggle camera as no movement could be seen in the pictures. " I think that I like Muggle photographs better than I do the ones from a magical camera, " She said. There was a faint blush to appear on her cheekbones at the admittance. It was almost as if she were worried that someone like her brother would overhear though they were obviously safe from prying ears in the dorm room.

“There’s a reason this school has a curfew,” Bella purrs, staring out over the balcony and not turning back at the sound of footsteps approaching. “Things tend to go bump in the night, and you don’t want to be here when they do.” She smiles; it’s not pleasant.
She'd been on her way back to the Ravenclaw Tower after her latest night rendevous. This time, like many others, it had been spent laid out under the stars in study of the consellations. The sound of another voice made her freeze, however, worried that she'd been caught by a Prefect. However, once she figured out just who it was, she wasn't sure if she should feel relieved or not. " Yet we both seem inclined to break that rule, " She muttered.

Elinor nodded. “Suspenders and everything. I mean, pretty sure I looked a ten-year-old boy for a bit, but I don’t regret my decision.” In general, Elinor rarely did regret, but especially when it came to things like clothes. She simply didn’t care enough. “Still it sounds like you had fun, and that’s the point of stuff like that honestly.” Then she nudged Octavia’s shoulder. “I took a ton of pictures from the ball, d’you wanna see them?”
" Yeah well-- I think that it was a bit of a relief for everyone to participate in the festivities. Especially after what happened with the battle, " She said with a small nod. Glad that one event that this school had didn't end with disaster, She thought to herself. There was some part of her that had the sinking suspicison that something bad would happen especially after the late opening and the Battle of the Keys. Despite her innate desire to not acknowledge what was going, it was blatantly clear that things were stirring. She smiled at the subject change and nodded in response. " That would be wonderful actually, " She said.
░▌MCALLISTER, E.
Elinor smiled. “Why thank you darling.” She put on purposefully posh English accent as she said this before giggling. “I wore a suit by the way, I think you would’ve liked it.” Then Elinor linked arms with the younger girl. “So if you didn’t dance with me but you didn’t stop moving all night, then who did you dance with? Unless you were roaming about the forest all night?”
" A suit? " She said, raising her brows. Immediately, she wondered what her mother woul have thought if she had the gall to show up in such attire. Anything other than a gown that made her look like a princess would have definitely caused her mother to fret. " You're right. I would have loved it, " She finally said with a nod. It was a daring move and that was perhaps why Octavia enjoyed the thought so much. It was why she enjoyed Elinor so much. She was always unapologetic about being exactly who she was. " Ah well, I really only danced with a couple people--specifically Fabian and Micah, " She said with a shrug, " Unfortunately not. I only escaped briefly to the outside--suppose it had just felt like I wandered around the Great Hall quite a bit. "

“ look at the stars. it won’t fix the economy. it won’t stop wars. it won’t give you flat abs or better sex or even help you figure out your relationship and what you want to do with your life. but it’s important. it helps you remember that you and your problems are both infinitesimally small and conversely, that you are a piece of an amazing and vast universe. ”
░▌MCALLISTER, E.
“Well hopefully they’ll be scared into supporting a proper team then,” Elinor huffed not at all feeling bad for her words. She was right, after all. Casting the annoyance aside, she glanced at Octavia and smiled. “You know, I don’t think I saw you at the ball Octavia. I was saving you a dance. I looked very smashing by the way.”
" If that was the angle that you were going for, then I would say that it was working. The poor lad looked like he was about to mess his pants, " She responded. It was rather strange that she hadn't spotted Elinor for the entire night. She had been roaming all around through the duration of the night though--as if on cue her leg throbbed as a reminder that she had been on it a little too much. " I don't think that I stopped moving all night. I do regret missing out on that dance, " She responded. Shaking her head, a light smile appeared at the girls confident remark. " Ah but certainly. I wouldn't have expected for Elinor Mcallister to look anything other than smashing. "
░▌VANCE, E.
“Oh, hush, Octavia! It’s just dancing and hardly means anything!” Emmeline knew that her friend was only teasing her, and that knowledge showed in the slight smile that graced her face as she shook her head at the blond girl. The way that she saw it, if she was going to be dragged out to this thing, she may as well have some fun while she was here, and she would hate to seem so rude as to turn everyone that asked away. She was hardly about to make anything of it. “Oh, I’m fine.” She insisted, glad for the subject change. “I think I’m just too stubborn to get seriously injured.”
An easy laughter escaped from the blonde's lips at the brunette's response. It was, once again, relieving to see the girl lightening up for the night. If only for a moment, it seemed that the demons that Emmeline had been facing lately faded to the back of her mind. The laughter was replaced quickly with a smile of pure relief. Octavia already felt horrible enough that Sirius had gotten injured on account of her. She didn't know how she could deal with it if Emmeline had been seriously hurt as well. " I'm glad that you weren't hurt, " She said. Nodding her head she spoke up once more, " Or you are just smart enough to avoid it. "
Blonde tendrils fell in front of the girl's face as she tuned in to the book that was placed on her lap. This time it was an exploration memoir that she held which detailed Magellan's sailing expedition. She'd been so enthralled that she didn't hear footsteps approach her nor feel the presence of the other. It wasn't until they had spoken to her that she snapped out of her daze. " Sorry-- I got kind of lost in this, " She spoke, sheepish grin tugging at her lips as she looked up.

Elinor couldn’t take hearing these blatant lies any longer. “Puddlemere United is clearly the most superior team in the entire league. They’ve won the League Cup twenty-two time and the bleeding European Cup twice! You have no idea what you’re talking about so just stop.”
Laughter escaped from her lips as she watched the first year stalk off clearly hurt by the older girl's comments. " Think you're scaring the first years a bit, Elinor. Perhaps you should try to be a little more gentle. They are fragile enough without one of your passionate arguments, " She stated, tilting her head at the girl.
