[AO3] Currently obsessed with Project Hail Mary. I'm a dedicated Grace/Carl-shipper. I also â„ Star Trek, Star Wars, Sense8, Final Fantasy, Almost Human, The Unit, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Let's say Grace and Carl were actually in a committed relationship. What pet names would they use for each other, if any? Or are they the type to just use first names because they don't do pet names? I need everyone's thoughts on this fundamental question! (Definitely not asking because I need inspiration for future fanfiction and can't decideâŠ)

Tumblr should take away the ability to like posts for a few weeks so peeps understand this website cannot survive with just liking. I see so many gorgeous gifs and edits and they get like....13 reblogs and 700 likes. That's not right, fam
thereâs very few things that drive me up the wall in fandom as much as this weird new assumption that fandom is primarily a space for younger people that older folks are only accepted into in a trial basis if they promise to centralize and accommodate younger fans, and further, anything else is creepy and predatory. ITâS OKAY FOR ADULTS TO PRODUCE CONTENT FOR OTHER ADULTS.
if I have to read âwomen in their 30sâ used as an insult one more time I swear Iâll - step away from that user and just hang out with the other grownups who consistently create good content because Iâm also an adult and too busy comparing car insurance to fight with teenagers on the internet, but goddAMMIT Iâll be annoyed
grace and carl getting to grow old together... grace knitting carl a cabled sweater because they have all the time in the world to wait until the sun burns out... the two of them sitting on their porch in their home in california, watching the sunrise over the ocean, when stratt calls to tell them that the beatles have come home...
This is the most recent thing I've written, although it's still unfinished and sitting in my drafts. It's from the second part of my most recent Carl/Grace fic (part one is already posted on AO3).

They climbed out of the car and started hauling the supplies from the hardware store into the building. Little by little, the spacious back of the SUV emptied out. Dr. Grace carried the last few boxes of duct tape inside on his own while Carl stayed behind to restore the vehicle to its original state by unfolding the backseats and locking them back into place.
He had just finished with the rear bench and was snapping the backrest into position when Grace came back from inside the hangar, walked around to the back of the vehicle and shut the cargo doors from the outside. Then he climbed in through the still-open side door and closed that too, from the inside.
Suddenly, they were cut off from the outside world, alone together in the enclosed space of the large car despite having no intention of driving anywhere.
âWhat are you doing?â Carl asked. He sounded more puzzled than annoyed. He reached for the middle row of seats, still folded flat into the floor, intending to pull it back up as well. But Grace, crouching awkwardly in the narrow space, promptly settled himself right on top of it, making that plan impossible.
âIâm taking a break,â he said. âAnd so are you.â
Carl stared at him. âIn the car?â
âYes. In the car.â
Ryland reached for him and, with a kind of gentle determination Carl found himself oddly unwilling to resist, guided him towards the back. A second later, the security agent was sitting on the rear bench with Grace settling in beside him.
âYou can relax in here,â the scientist said. âThe carâs parked, the engineâs off, and nobody can see you.â
âYou can see me.â
Grace smiled and slightly rolled his eyes. âI wonât tell anyone. Promise.â Then he leaned back against the seat and stretched out his long legs. With the middle row still folded down, there was a surprising amount of room between them and the front seats.
For a while, they sat in silence. Then Grace let out a long, half-exasperated sigh.
âWould you please lean back and get comfortable already?â
He wasnât even trying to hide his impatience anymore. Turning towards Carl, he planted a hand on the government agent's broad shoulder and pushed him, demonstratively but not unkindly, back against the black upholstery.
Oddly enough, Carl didnât resist. Grace noticed immediately. For a moment, he paused, his hand still resting on Carlâs shoulder, studying him with open curiosity. Keeping Carlâs gaze, he shifted a little closer and brought both hands up to the perfectly symmetrical knot of his striped tie.
He watched the serious man for any reaction as he carefully began loosening it, almost like Carl had become the latest specimen under one of his microscopes at the lab. Carl didnât seem entirely opposed to the unexpected attention, but he couldnât let it pass without comment.
âAt the risk of repeating myself,â he said, âwhat exactly are you doing?â
Grace glanced up at him.
âIsnât this more comfortable?â
Carl huffed a quiet laugh. âIs answering a question with another question your standard avoidance strategy?â
âDo you always ask this many questions when someoneâs trying to help you relax?â
By then, the tie had come undone. Grace slid it gently out from beneath Carlâs collar and laid it beside him on the empty seat. Without missing a beat, he reached for the top button of Carlâs white shirt. This time, the security agent intervened. His hand closed around Graceâs wrist; not pulling him away, not stopping him outright, just holding on.
Carl looked directly into those sky-blue eyes, and Grace could see the unspoken question sitting there between them. The corner of his mouth twitched, soft enough to feel almost like flirting.
âI know what Iâm doing,â Grace said quietly, finally answering the question that had been hanging in the air the entire time. âAnd I think you know it, too.â He tilted his head slightly, peering at Carl over the rims of his small glasses. âThe real question is, do you want me to stop, or do you want me to keep going?â
âWell, the rest of it should be pretty simple. Just duct tape and aluminum foil.â Dr. Grace smiles, a little lopsided. His glasses have slipped farther down his nose. âMaybe some safety glasses.â
âIâm sure we can arrange that.â Carlâs a little breathless, and Dr. Grace smiles wider.
Carl wants to make him happy, he realizes. Wants to see him smile and pump his fist in the air again after some new discovery. For the project, he tells himself. Just because heâll make progress on the project.
They glance at each other, and Dr. Graceâs cheeks flush, but he doesnât look away. He doesnât look away, and Carlâs heart lifts, and for fifteen minutes theyâre on top of the world. They buy safety glasses and throw bags and bags of sour skittles in their cart and on the drive back to the hangar, Carl feels more hopeful than he has in a long time.
(He knows itâs worthless. He knows itâs a bad impulse, that this will just lead to even more pain, just like everyone else whoâs joined and left the project at the drop of a hat. He does it anyway.)

carl, as a rule, doesn't let himself get attached to people in this business. that goes out the window as soon as dr. grace shows up.
