i like a character who follows all of the rules their whole life and then ends up with big fucking nothing except their own self righteous #coping because the rules arent actually good for them or for anybody else

i know there’s a lot of men’s football rpf on ao3 but it still feels a bit like my spot being blown up this world cup. how do i explain this…. this perhaps makes no sense but the world of football rpf is so fragmented. so many different leagues, different teams, different eras, different languages. of the 53,000 fics (not 43,000 like that journalist said—there are around 10,000 archive locked fics, including mine) less than half are in english. the most popular ship in the tag has ~1500 works. can you name another fandom that has that many works and such little agreement on subject? don’t say hockey, it’s not the same. when i was really really into football rpf, there wasn’t any Big Ship. on the most popular fic i ever wrote for the most popular ship i ever wrote for, i got maybe 1000 hits and that was far beyond my expectations and almost double the runner up… it’s a large space but being in the rpf community feels quite small actually. it barely feels right to call it a fandom, unified by something as ubiquitous as football. perhaps genre would be more apt. it’s a modality. pure expression of our personal relationship to who and what we support. i once wrote a fic where the vice captain and the manager of a club i hate fucked nasty and to this day it is the only fic in that tag and the only one that will ever exist. it got 19 kudos and i know every single one of those 19 people by name
Johan Cruyff (1947-2016)
Dutch journalist, Hubert Smeets once wrote that, “Cruyff was the first player who understood he was an artist, and the first who was able and willing to collectivize the art of sports.”
Of the Dutch footballer, Smeets would also say, “He made this country (Holland) after the war. I think he was the only one who understood the sixties.”
