Be wary of giving and taking Health/Fitness advice
I have a friend who lost over 75lbs and because she lost that much weight she would often get questions on how she did it or how they can do it.  What I admired about her is that she would tell them what she did but then she would also tell them that they should consult with a personal trainer or nutritionist since she is neither of those.
This is why itâs so worrying to see people on Tumblr giving out certain kinds of health/fitness advice. There is nothing wrong with telling people what you did or saying what worked for you but then when the questions get too specific, you can say that you donât know. On the flip side, people should also be more wary about who they get advice from, losing weight does not make someone an expert. Losing weight can be as simple as eating properly and exercising, especially if you were accustomed to bad eating habits and were sedentary for the most part. A huge part of it is determination, consistency and the motivation to reach your goals and this is the part that many bloggers can be and are great for because they have done it.
Iâm going to give an example of some bad advice: a person asked a fitness blogger about squats, they said that the squats were building their legs (quads) rather than their butt and they want to get a bigger butt. Â The blogger responded by saying that the only way to get a bigger butt is by eating a lot or getting butt implants. Well, I know that you can shape your butt and/or get a bigger butt by doing squats, deadlifts, bridges, hip thrusts, kettlebell swings and other exercises but it is how you do them, how often, how much weight you use as well as other variables including nutrition. Â Chances are that the person asking for advice simply wasnât doing the squats correctly (according to her specific goal of building her butt).
Be wary of the kind of advice you are giving out, nothing is wrong with saying you donât know or to acknowledge that you donât have the knowledge or expertise in a particular subject. Â To those asking for advice, if you want to know questions specific to your own goals find someone qualified to give you the best answers.

Advent Calendar With A Difference
We have been opening the doors on our advent calendars for a few days now. What if, though, instead of chocolate waiting there was something actually good for our health?
That is the idea behind the health information advent calendar. Each day a fresh tip is revealed. Donât worry that you have missed the first few, they are still there, here are the first three to give you a flavour:
1st December
If youâre feeling peckish, fruit is a great way to fill up between meals. Satsumas, the traditional stocking-filler, contain lots of vitamin C. But if you prefer savoury snacks, choose popcorn, pretzels or chestnuts, rather than salted peanuts, crisps and high-fat dips.
Yummy!
2nd December
The Department of Health recommends not regularly drinking:
more than 2 to 3 units for women per day â this is equivalent to a standard 175ml glass of 13 percent wine
more than 3 to 4 units for men per day â this is equivalent to a pint and a half of 4 percent beer
These guidelines donât change just because itâs the holiday season. Whatever your favourite Christmas tipple is, keep an eye on what youâre drinking and stay within the limits.
Cheers!
3rd December
We may not be guaranteed snow to make a snowman, but there are plenty of outdoor activities you can do over the festive break. Take the kids ice skating, go for a bike ride or walk around a Christmas market. If itâs a bit too cold to go outside, play with your kids, work out to an exercise DVD, or visit the heated swimming pool at your local gym (just make sure to check their Christmas timetable).
Great stuff! So why not bookmark and return each day in December so that you can give yourself the gift of health and wellbeing this festive season!
Did you know?
Advent calendars date back to the start of the 19th century. Like many popular Christmas traditions this one had it origins in Germany.
Early advent calendars could be as simple as chalk marks on a door or wall - no chocolate in sight!
The first manufactured advent calendar as we would understand it today was released in 1908, by a man named Bernard Lang.
Although a typical advent calendar chocolate contains just 25 calories a traditional Christmas Day can entail consuming up to a whopping 6000!
