Really, Akira?
Mixed race people are a central focus in both Devilman Crybaby and Japan Sinks 2020 and it leads me to wonder if Yuasa is using the state of being a Devilman as an allegory for being biracial or otherwise mixed race.
There’s the scene late in the series where we see a montage of people revealing themselves to be Devilmen online as Miki (the central biracial character) applauds them for their bravery. This stuck out to me as a clear signal that Devilmen represented something IRL and the more I thought about it the more it seemed obvious they were a biracial metaphor.
There’s this ongoing question in Devilman (not just Crybaby, but the franchise as a whole) whether Devilman is Akira or Amon, human or demon. The answer, without fail, is that he’s Devilman. Akira and Amon are relevant to his creation and in a real sense he is both of them, but most fundamentally he is just himself. He’s not a half demon/half human, he’s a whole Devilman. The parallels to mixed race identity here are very obvious.
We see Miki directly and literally attacked by a gang of thugs for being biracial (they note her green eyes and deduce this) and we also see insults coming from both sides of that racial divide in our peeks at social media. One user writing in English insults Miki for being Asian while another typing in (IIRC) Japanese asserts a baseless conspiracy theory that whites created the demons. There is no winning for someone caught in between. And this carries over to the Devilmen.
All of the Devilmen are persecuted for what they are and seen purely as demons by the humans. Koda is likewise treated as lesser-than by the demons and identified purely as a human. The outward identity of the Devilmen shifts according to who’s viewing them, a common event as people view mixed race people. There is no tribe for the Devilmen except each other because they are always seen as other by both humans and demons.
You could somewhat apply these arguments to bisexuality as well, but I don’t think that gels quite as well. It does, however, make Miki and Akira’s obvious love for each other being juxtaposed with their relationships with Miko and Ryo sort of interesting.
I love your new Amon, you showed up his dragon side
Thank you! <3 The horns really make him look so much more intimidating and badass. ;w; <3 Now I only need to learn how to draw them from different angles.
