These are beautiful peaces of work that really bring back the feel of my trip to Japan. Of course a century has passed but there are many things about the water around the islands that are so timeless still today.
Photoshop does not work like a dressing room
Client: My fiancé and I are unhappy with the engagement photos you sent us.
Me: What’s wrong with them?
Client: We’re wearing sweat pants in them!
Me: But that’s what you wore to the shoot. I asked you on the day if you wanted to change into something more appropriate and you said no.
Client: Well, I didn’t know you were going to leave them in the actual photos. You’re a professional photographer - you’re supposed to Photoshop better clothing onto us or whatever.
Me: That’s not really what I do, nor is it really how Photoshop works…
Client: Don’t lie to me! I’ve seen what Photoshop can do in magazines and stuff like that. It’s not my fault you don’t know how to do your job properly!
Negotiations and talks are one thing...but until it's on paper it's not happening...no matter who you are.

So I miss Japan...
I have been thinking a lot about Japan recently as it has almost been two years since I got to visit the southern mainland. I really want to find an excuse to go back...but honestly right now I don't think I could justify the expense in the slightest. So in an effort to bring a little of Japan into my life I was thinking about the foods I enjoyed most when I was there: Tempura Sweet Potato Green Tea Ice Cream Nori Okonomiyaki
The first I can make anytime, the second I can find at my Safeway, the third at any Asian market, but the Okonomiyaki couldn't even be found through a vendor at Uwajimaya, Seattle. A quick search online landed me at the on this article: http://www.seattlemet.com/eat-and-drink/nosh-pit/articles/unlikely-and-excellent-okonomiyaki-at-the-gastropod-april-2013 where Seattle's snooty Gastropod, Chef Travis Kukull claims to be serving it in his restaurant. However, after closer investigation, he may be cooking it on a grill with greens, but that's just a small plate with a bunch of overpriced seafood preparation in my opinion.
The dish is amazing when prepared modestly and traditionally; there is no need to turn it into some table dressing.
I did however find the link, in the article, for Cooking With Dog's YouTube page to be the perfect refresher on how to cook it myself. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnL0rD57JIE)
I then expand my search to other cities in the area and found that next weekend only in the Bellevue location, Uwajimaya will be serving up Okonomiyaki traditional style...roadtrip!!!

He is experiencing some color shift in the Ectachrome slide, so I attempted to fix this image of him with his parents and grand parents in Arizona..as he was headed off to the Air Force. (L. to R.: Orvin Flora, Marilyn Flora, Hazel Fern Cress Flora Moss, Ray Moss & AC Flora) Grandpa again looks too cool for school...but all of the Floras have corrective lenses....curses.

No, that's not Tommy Flora you're looking at here; that is our grandfather, Orvin Flora camping in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan 71 years ago! This image is a photo copy shot by my father from Grandpa's personal photo album. Grandpa was just 19 years old in this photo from February 1943. I bet he thought he had a future in mobster-ing!
My dad has been working on digitizing his father's photo albums. This album is the first and the funniest by far. Grandpa was 19-20 yrs old, and travelling a lot, visiting his brothers who were in the army before going off to war. Grandpa, who was always something of a ladies' man, had not yet married his wife Marilyn, so dad and I are assuming she removed photos of other women from his photo album at some point.
I worked really hard in 2013 and rewarded myself with a new body. The Nikon D7000 joined our household on Christmas eve and the animals were not amused. Look at those chins...I pinch them.
