one big thing i think people outside fandom (like, all fandoms, fandom in general, not any particular one) tend to misunderstand is they know it's a subculture of people who are weirdly deeply invested in fictional media, and they hear about drama caused by people in those subcultures being unhinged in not-fun ways, and they think the unhingedness comes from the fact of being overinvested in works of fiction.

which is a natural assumption, but in my experience that's not really the case? like in my experience the drama llamas in fandom are usually not the ones who are just genuinely very deeply into the fiction. i've known people who are basically thinking about star trek or x-men comics or supernatural pretty much 100% of their free time and ime that type of person is usually very nice and surprisingly functional in their regular life. when someone's a constant nexus of fandom drama it's usually not that they are obsessed with the actual work of fiction the fandom is about, it's at least one of the following:

what they're obsessed with is not the source material but their unhealthy parasocial relationships with one or more of the people who created it

what they're obsessed with is not the source material but some elaborate shared-universe subset of fanfic about it that's only barely related to the original at this point, and/or an esoteric reading-against-the-text reinterpretation of the source material (often if the canon is active and ongoing this leads to becoming actively hostile toward it for its inevitably increasing failure to conform to their preferred fanon)

what they're obsessed with is not the source material but the fandom itself and gathering clout within it, so that the source material basically only exists to them as a tool for scoring points in increasingly arcane fandom disputes

and very often you get the same person doing 2 and sometimes even all 3 of these, and that's where the trouble really starts

Okay after a couple years of Kwannon being my favorite X-Man I have read her original appearances in the Nicieza run. First off that storyline is underrated and misrepresented; yes it makes Psylocke confusing and hard to explain, but that confusion is the emotional heart of the story. Whatever the wikis say about who is who, the point of that story is that both Psylocke and Revanche are both Betsy and Kwannon, and it's torture for them. "Four minds in two bodies." The Legacy virus boosts Revanche's telepathy and allows her to heal/go back to being mostly Kwannon at the end, but Psylocke is still part-Kwannon.

secondly, uh.... are there any Betsy fans who can tell me if we're sure that the Kwannon who comes back at the end of Mystery in Madripoor is supposed to be Revanche? because in context it makes more sense for her to be the part of Kwannon's psyche in Psylocke, put into a new body when Betsy gets rid of it. But I haven't read anything with Betsy in between Revanche's death and the Krakoa Excalibur run, I don't know what was established about how much of Kwannon's personality was still in Psylocke at that point.

what are the moral/ethical ramifications of knowing information about other people that they don't have access to unless you choose to share it with them? is it ever okay to withhold information about the future in order to negotiate or simply because you have no interest in sharing it? is it ever okay to demand that someone share information about the future with you because you suspect it could be relevant to your imminent decision process? is it an irresponsible and selfish rejection of duty of care to ignore or reject a premonition or to only take advantage of precognition for personal use? is prophecy an invasion of privacy? what about the potential for abuse of prophetic power in order to manipulate and even terrorise by withholding, misleading, or even outright fabricating, knowing that your position is safe due to the value of your power to those who might prosecute you for it? to what extent does personal bias affect the translation of prophetic visions into the future tense? who does a prophet serve? is a prophet human? does the humanity of the prophet matter at all?

Why can't Rhaenyra let go of Alicent, despite everything she's done to her?

I won't talk about the symbolism and the nostalgia, it's an answer. But there's another one:

It's Rhaenyra acting like Rhaenyra.

This lasting love is the raw manifestion of her personality. She's ambitious and spoiled. She's been a princess of a colonialist family, the heir, the favored child. She's used to things going her way, she can't stand when they don't. She's always gotten what she wanted.

Daemon? Criston? Harwin? Mysaria? She got them.

The throne? She has it.

Feeling as valuable as a son in Viserys' eyes? He named her heir and deeply neglected the sons he pushed Aemma to death for and raped out of Alicent.

New dragons riders? They came to her.

Chosing who she married, when and who she had children with? That as well!

And so on!

But Alicent? Rhaenyra's wanted Alicent long before the throne. Maybe even before Daemon.

Alicent was taken away from her. Alicent was rubbed under her nose for two decades. Married to someone else. Raising kids that weren't hers, —in her eyes— loving them more than she loved Rhaenyra. So close, yet so far.

Alicent is her deepest, oldest desire. Alicent is the one thing Rhaenyra never got. This familiar land she still hasn't conquered. It frustrates her to no end. She is her greatest obsession.

Rhaenyra can't get over her because that's the way she is. She wants to possess Alicent. It doesn't matter how much Alicent hurts her, how many times she betrays her, in how many ways she escapes her, how much resentment builds between them. That frustration lingers because it's a whim.

Rhaenyra needs to get the things that she wants, one way or another, soon or late. If what she wants isn't avaible, she goes for something that can replace it, however without giving up on her first desire. That's what she's always done.

Alicent isn’t any different. As long as Rhaenyra hasn't acquiered what she wants from Alicent, as long as she won't feel like Alicent is hers, that Alicent has chosen her, as her jealousy isn't appeased, that feeling is going to last.

There's genuine love but the persistence is ego driven.

Once you've accepted how much of a selfish and stubborn person Rhaenyra has always been and noticed her vicious patterns, her undying love for Alicent makes plenty of sense.

I love the world of ATLA so much but I find the fandom really rough. If you put the original series under the same microscope that Korra or the comics or the new movie get you would find just as many flaws. But instead these additions are criticized for ruining a "perfect" show and every new installment triggers a new wave of shitting on the parts of this franchise I like most. And I just can't do it.

the thing is I think Doubt Comes In really benefits from the changes between the pre-Broadway live recording and the cast album. we get so much longer to sit in the dread and understand why Orpheus loses trust. however it cuts "vinegar and turpentine" which is completely unforgivable.
