The use of artistic expression to come to terms with the transience of life dates back to the classics, culminating in the well-known still life Vanitas paintings from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In my series Vanitas I explore this famous motive in three very distinctive ways, creating new angles and perspectives, fueled by personal encounters with the finite nature of our existence. One part of this ‘triptych’ examines vanitas from the standpoint of perceiving the self, those fleeting moments when we confirm our existence by locking eyes with ourselves in the mirror. The series of small brooches are crafted from found mirrors - common Vanitas symbols in themselves - and cut in the shape of medallions. The reflecting side is worn on the inside, so that it reflects the person incessantly. Another part of this series engages with corporeality, starting with the creative process itself, where I shaped amorphous clumps of clay into bones. A bony bracelet and a skeletal bread basket remind us of the bones within, but simultaneously cheer us up, with their comical and almost friendly appearance. Vanitas, for me, is not only tied to these big moments where we are aware of our finity, but also exists in daily life, however mundane. Translucent, shimmering shapes - cast from product packaging - try to capture the ephemeral enjoyment that consumption of the content brought us.

The moon's waxing and waning - its coy act of hide and seek, enabled by clouds and the earth's shade - must be an illusionist's dream act. How we resemble it, constantly preoccupied with what of ourselves to put on display or keep hidden. Sometimes we seem to be made of glass, mirroring each other's every emotion, silently, without words. Then clouds drift by and dress us in a grey cloak of invisibility.

You might try to hide behind tinted glasses, but I always find a way to dazzle you with my golden smile. You cannot ignore me. I am the beginning and the end; without my blinding light you would not be. Alchemists of times long past tried to uncover the secret to my infinite powers. They saw their greedy desires reduced to ashes.
