Prefect duties were nearly always a bore. Nearly, because more often than not, the Marauders were up to something. Most days you would turn a blind eye when you would see them sneaking about, you were friends with Remus and didn't want to get him in trouble, but something was different that night. Remus was walking alone, seemingly with a destination in mind.
Remus was different than his friends, he was sweet, and caring, and reserved most days, as opposed to James and Sirius who were the opposite. Not that you had anything against them, but Remus sure would get into less trouble without them. You assumed that he was going to meet up with them then, so you followed. Most of the time they heard you coming, or you would make unnecessary noise so that they would become more cautious, because if anyone else caught them then they were sure to get detention.
You followed Remus outside, and it wasn't until you saw him frown at the sky that you began to question where he was going. It had never occurred to you that he might not be meeting up with his friends, and you trailed behind him now out of curiosity. You were so focused on trying to stay quiet that you hadn't even noticed him coming up on the whomping willow, and before you could call out to him, he was already halfway underneath it. He had done something to make it stop moving, and with slight hesitation, you continued following him. You just had to know where he was going.
You froze in your place when you heard him scream. You hadn't gotten out of the tunnel yet, but you could see that it lead to a worn down house, and by the distance you walked, it was in Hogsmeade. Suddenly it all made sense- his sicknesses ever month, his boggart, even his bloody nicknames that his friends had given him, Moony. Remus was a werewolf. You didn't have to think twice about leaving once you heard a howl that confirmed your suspicion.
The whole walk to your post was filled with thoughts of him. You could imagine how he felt about it, and it was almost ironic, with your dad being a werewolf himself since before you were born. To think, you were worried about telling him you were half werewolf, and there he was. You wanted to be mad about it, but you couldn't be. It wasn't like he was dangerous. He wore sweaters for crying out loud.
You spent the next couple weeks trying to find a way to tell him that you knew, and it was eating you up inside. You wanted him to confide in you, and know that he could trust you. The two of you were sitting in the courtyard doing your homework like you always did, and one smile from his was enough for you to know you had to tell him you knew.
"You know how I have prefect duties after hours most nights, right?" You asked him, making him look up from his essay.
"Of course," He answered with a nod.
"Well sometimes when I find you and the others sneaking around, I'll wait until you're all together and make noise so you get more cautious and don't get in trouble," She told him. He could tell that she was going somewhere with what she was telling him, so he stayed silent. "A lot of the time that means following one of you to the other. You, in particular, are terrible at stealth, so normally I'll trail behind you until you get to everyone else. Except, when I followed you the last time you didn't meet up with them."
Remus's heart was just about beating out of his chest. He knew where you were going, and it scared him. The only thing stopping him from interrupting you was knowing that you didn't like to be interrupted when you told a story because it threw you off topic. You stayed quiet for a moment, collecting your thoughts, before continuing.
"I followed you to the shrieking shack," You said simply, deciding to get to the point.
"And you want to know what I was doing there?" He asked you nervously. You watched him fidget with the ends of his sweater and with a soft smile and took his shaking hands into your own.
"I want to know why you thought you had to hide it from me," You told him gently, looking into his light brown eyes in hopes of calming his nerves.
"I didn't want to scare you," He whispered, averting his eyes to where you had intertwined your fingers.
"You could never scare me," You told him, using your free hand to make him look at you.
Remus had never felt so vulnerable before in his life. You were important to him, more than you realized, but his affiliation worried him. It was the only thing stopping him from making a move, but now that you knew, and were still so comfortable and sweet to him, he couldn't think of any reason not too. The way your eyes gazed into his made him smile, and he took your other hand that was still resting near his chin.
"I'm sorry that I didn't tell you, I didn't know how to bring it up, and the thought of you leaving me has terrified me since the moment we met," He said, his voice coming out strong, and yet still shy. "You mean too much to me."
"I'm a half werewolf, because my dad is," You blurted out, feeling like then was a time as any to tell him. "I don't change like you do, obviously, but it poses some difficulties around that time. It's also why I was able to, you know, get away when I saw you. I'm enough to be considered one to others, so if you ever wanted some company I'd be happy to oblige."
"Would you like to? Keep me company I mean," He asked her, "Not then necessarily, but always."
"Are you asking me out?" You asked him with a coy smile, making him blush a bit.
"I am, Yeah."
