Rugrats (1991 â 2004)
the other night i tried to make a curry and i got chilli burns all over my face, so i thought to myself âhang on, doesnât milk soothe chilli burns? it doesâ and i couldnât google because i couldnât see so i just had to blindly feel my way to the fridge and pour out a bowl of milk, and then plant my face in the bowl of milk, anyway at that point the rice cooker went off and triggered a power surge which turned my electricity off, which i didnât notice at first because i had my face in a bowl of milk and when i did emerge from the dairy prison i thought i had gone blind with chilli burns. so no i donât really cook much.
me, after eating 1 healthyish meal that might have involved a vegetable: i am gonna sign up for yogalates and spin classes and next yearâs marathon i am a pinnacle of health and wellbeing yesterday i may have only eaten a packet of crisps and drank 4 glasses of wine but today i am Health Woman
Leave makes fathers more involvedâand less likely to want bigger families.
In March 2007, Spain introduced a national policy granting most new fathers two weeks of fully paid paternity leave. The policy proved exceptionally popular, with 55% of men eligible in the first year opting to take the paid time. The amount of leave covered by the program was doubled in 2017 and expanded to five weeks in 2018, with additional increases expected between now and 2021.
Economists studying the effects of the original 2007 policy examined what happened to families that had children just before and just after the program began, and found differences in the outcomes. While the early cohort of men who were eligible for paternity leave were just as likely to stay in the workforce as the men who werenât eligible, they remained more engaged with childcare after their return to work, and their partners were more likely to stay in the workforce as well. In that sense, the program seems to have done what policy makers would have hoped.
Unexpectedly, though, the researchers also found that families who were eligible for the paternity leave were less likely to have kids in the future. In a study published in the Journal of Public Economics(paywall), economists LĂdia FarrĂ© of the University of Barcelona and Libertad GonzĂĄlez of University of Pompeu Fabra estimate that two years on, parents who had been eligible for the newly introduced program were 7% to 15% less likely to have another kid than parents who just missed the eligibility cutoff. While the difference dissipated further into the future, even after six years, parents who had been eligible for the leave were still less likely to have a child again.
The researchers suggest an intriguing reason why.
After paternity leave was instituted, surveys of Spanish men ages 21 to 40 showed they desired fewer children than before. FarrĂ© and GonzĂĄlez think that spending more time with their childrenâor the prospect of having to do soâmay have made men more acutely aware of the effort and costs associated with childrearing, and, as the researchers put it, âshifted their preferences from child quantity to quality.â

please do not force an lgbt label onto anne frank. she died before she had the chance to explore her sexuality and if you need to think of her as lgbt to have empathy for her you need to reconsider how you think of holocaust victims. please do not vilify her father, a man who lost his entire family in the holocaust, for censoring the parts in anneâs diary where she expresses attraction for women. it was 1947. jewish girls were already seen as hypersexual. he was protecting her legacy as best he could, and you have no right to call him a villain for wanting what was period-typical best for his late daughter.
And itâs unfair even to blame her father at all, because ANNE FRANK CENSORED THOSE PASSAGES HERSELFÂ by gluing brown paper over the pages, pages that we were only able to read in 2018 once non-invasive imaging was able to see the ink through the paper and glue.
Stop spreading misinformation, stop imposing identities onto a girl who never got a chance to figure herself out, and stop acting as if this suddenly makes her sympathetic. If she wasnât already sympathetic, youâve got issues.
