5 UNDERUSED CHARACTERS / PERSONALITIES 

I always notice the same type of characters being played- the stoner, the secretly brilliant queen bee- so I decided to whip up this list of a few underused personalities / character ideas I’d love to see used in rp, along with some suggested faceclaims. I hope this is helpful, and please like or reblog if using. And please excuse the shitty graphic. 

01. the classic country boy. 

Any given Saturday, he could be out fishing, hunting, or mudding in the Ford pick-up truck which he dearly loves, wearing his boots and a good baseball cap. Country music is always playing in the background, and he’s got a habit of droppin’ hard sounds at the end of words. He religiously keeps up with his favorite football team, has a group of guy friends he does everything with who are practically his brothers, will defend his mother and sister(s) until the last blow, and you can count on seeing him in the pews of the church every Sunday morning. You could either make him a redneck asshole, or a sweet country boy; growing up in the South, I’ve met my fair share of both.

02. the honest-to-God nerd / geek. 

There’s always a few Magic cards at the bottom of their backpack, but for the most part, they’re kept in protective sleeves in large black binders, which come out at lunch. They spend their Saturday afternoons at the local gaming store, playing fantasy roleplaying games with others who share their interests. They’re incredibly passionate about Star Wars or Star Trek: once you get them going, it’s hard to stop. Any money they get goes straight to buying cards, games, or saving up for a convention. This personality isn’t limited to males; in fact, this is inspired by a female acquaintance of mine, who loves Star Wars that she’s got a Jedi braid despite her pixie cut. They’re great at arguing and debating, but try a regular conversation and it can be a little awkward. This isn’t the attractive, hot kind geek: this is the honest to God nerd, who people can’t help but laugh at a little bit. Their personality can throw people off of the fact that they’re probably actually quite hot or pretty.

03. the rich & naive daddy's girl. 

Her parents dote on her, and always have. She’s got a loving relationship with them, and they trust her completely, and rightfully so: she doesn’t do much wrong. No tragic home life backstory here- she had the ideal American childhood. She’s involved with church, always smiling, never mean, but just a bit too… loud. She considers herself everyone’s friend, and she’s incredibly nice, but expects everything to be handed to her, seeing as she’s never wanted for anything. She doesn’t understand the concept of not being able to afford something, often causing her to blurt out rude things or questions. She has everything she could ever want or need, but because of her naive nature and slight airhead vibe, in addition to her religious beliefs, cause her to be a point of irritation to her classmates, although they’re all generally nice to her face. She lacks true, always-there-for-you friends, has never been in love, and doesn’t have much life experience, as she’s been shielded from the world.

04. the former child genius. 

As a child, they learned to read incredibly early on; math was a breeze, and they aced the SAT before they were 13. They’ve got a knack for languages and remembering obscure facts, but as they’ve grown older, they’re not the leaps-and-bounds better student than everyone else; sure, they’re in all AP and it’s easy, but they’re definitely not graduating from college at 16. They’re struggling with their identity, wondering if they should just throw it all to the wind and stop trying, or push themselves to go harder. Their heightened speech and tendencies to speak of the small things they notice without a filter- “That mustard colored sweater looks particularly terrible”- along with their inability to pick up on social cues also distances them from others their age, and they feel incredibly lost and without a place.

05. the gifted musician. 

They’ve been playing the piano since the age of four; their childhood consisted of recitals and practices and everything in between. They’ve been considered for scholarships since the age of fourteen, and has always been complimented in their skills. Their entire identity is in playing piano, but here’s the thing: they hate playing piano. Afraid to let everyone down, they keep up the charade, but the stress of having to act as someone they’re not is quite stressful. They’ve picked up smoking and/or drinking, have begun acting out at times, and feel as if they have no value outside of their musical capablities, and struggle to define themselves outside of their skill. They’re on a teetering point between falling into self-destruction or forcing themselves onwards on this path to the future they do not want, and dream of one day finding themselves and being happy.
