Bookmarks I'm mailing to my $10 patreon subscribers. What do we think-- can't decide if the gold pen fits the vibe, I wish I had a lighter gold.
When it catches the light it's nice. They're printed with just a yellow pumpkin tho and I could simply leave it.. thoughts?

This month I've got some motivation saying/anti anxiety stickers and I'm letting patreons call dibs on an animal! It's a lot more personalized than I usually make sticker mail
For context, $5 $3 and higher subs on my patreon get a handful of stickers mailed to them every month. Only like 6 people do it but it's a fun time!
Of animal options, I currently have:
several cats, several foxes, a hummingbird, a crow, a goat, two red pandas, buncha dragons, few dogs, one bear, one honeybadger, one ferret, one dear, one pegasus unicorn, one rabbit, one bat, an axolotl, two lizards, a frog, a human witch, a mushroom, two hedgehogs, an otter, and a squirrel.
If anyone is interested! The animal sticker isn't the only one I send out, they're new, but the other stickers included this month will be a few flowers, some Vintage ones, and random miscellaneous ones

Move & Recaps
Hey guys! I haven't been posting much because I spent the last two months moving across the country. Now my stuff is here and theoretically I can get back into bookbinding-- practically, not so much, due to IRL time constraints.
Still, more than I was doing during the move! I'm currently working on the Desert Storm series for a friend. I've got all the books printed and folded, now at the awling/stabbing stage for most of them, and the sewing stage completed for 2.1 of them.
To those aware, I have a bookbinding patreon-- none of the content is paywalled, it's just a thing I set up so people could support if they want. I mail out stickers every month to one tier and these bookmarks I design and print to one of the higher tiers. If you want stickers or bookmarks mailed to you, and don't mind supporting, check it out.
These are August (bottom), september and october bookmarks. The August ones are one I painted in a sketchbook program with a kpop demon hunter lyric that has lived rent-free in my head, the other two are ones I've tried making with canva to try something new.
This is what the August ones look like all cut out and corner clipped (I print these myself). This is before I replaced the corner cutter that got lost in the move, so it's a little rougher than normal!

How many French links should you do?
Answer: feel it in your heart
Different answer: I usually do to, but for this series I decided to do three, which is already tedious and I've barely started

But usually I do two and it's a lot faster
It would be a lot less sewing.
I'm tempted to switch to a two hole process for the rest of the series (it's 11 books)
Got irritated with only being able to find my tiny curved needle and bought a big pack of different sizes
Curved needles are important to me for bookbinding. While it's technically possible to sew signatures with a regular needle, I find it irritating and awful.
And using a size: tiny curved needle is irritating as well. Obviously I use the medium size more, so I lose them more, leading to only the unused ones (size: tiny) being available. Solution was to buy more haha
Size tiny vs size medium:
Wax thread, signatures half sewn, and unwaxed threads. Also the wax bricks :)
This is what the signatures look like without being actively pressed, but after spending a day or so *in* the book press. Fairly flat but there's still air between the sheets:

I put two books from the Desert Storm series together and they're still not as big as Sa Sarad.
Comparison:

Sa Sarad is the biggest book in the desert storm series. It's huge for no reason. I put the first few signatures under a ten point weight as I went, which helped a lot. Even thirty minutes under a weight made a big difference-- compare the bottom of the stack to the top.
Do you need a bookpress?
No, a cheap cutting board and a weight are fine. I've seen people use stacks of books, too (the one thing a bookbinder will definitely have around!)
Additionally organization is key and I have zero regrets buying this over the door hanger for my books in progress.
It helps keep a series organized for sure!
What can you do to avoid swell?
I do 8 sheets per signature which creates some funky "swell" (folded side bigger than the unfolded side)
However, pressing it for a day or two before awling and sewing/gluing can help reduce this
(Using more sheets per signature could also reduce this but 8 is already pushing it, for me)
First of all when I'm folding a signature, I've found the easiest way is to clamp a piece of wood to my desk, press the sheets against the wood, and fold in half (both edges push against the wood, keeping the fold even)
Then I use a bonefolder to crease the fold
Here's what it looks like with some swell, when all the signatures are folded:
And here's what it looks like after about a day in the press. I could press it longer and get it even flatter if I wanted, but I don't need it perfect. When it's glued, it'll be pressed tight anyway
