🌻 Hey everyone! 🌻 I’ve decided to make this sort of masterpost on short essays in chinese for those who are learning the language on their own or anyone in case you needed help. This is based on my experience, but especially on my teacher’s advices, and it was basically the main homework/test type in my senior year. They’re not only bilingual dictionaries but also VISUAL, so they have pictures accompanying the object/ verb. They are relatively cheap and are available in a variety of languages. They’re available on amazon :)

Happy Lunar New Year Everyone!~

Today, let’s take the time to learn about Korean culture on this widely celebrated holiday!~ 

 Here are 6 things you should know about 설날 (Lunar New Year’s Day in Korea): 

1. 설날 (seol-lal):

설날 is one of the biggest holidays for Koreans! Just like the New Years for us ‘Muricans, 설날 is a momentous time of the year for families to come together and celebrate with lots of love, laughs, warmth, and of course, wonderful food! 

2. 차례 (cha rye)

차례 is an ancestral rite performed on 설날. Traditional foods are specifically arranged and set on a ritual table where families bow to ‘greet’ ancestral spirits to express gratitude and pray for the family’s wellbeing throughout the upcoming year.

3. 세배 (sae bae)

세배 is a deep traditional bow often performed in respect to one’s seniors. In my family, we all gather and bow to our eldest grandparents and receive their wisdom and wishes for us!

4. 새해 복 많이 받으세요!~

This phrase is used especially when bowing to an elder. It means: “I wish you many blessings (much luck) this year!”

5. 세뱃돈 (sae baet don)

세뱃돈 is the New Year’s “gift of money”. After children perform the 세배 to family elders, they often receive some money (세뱃돈) as well as the wishes and wisdom that the elders impart on them. Korean 세뱃돈 can be likened to the money given in Chinese custom, 红包. (恭喜发财、红包拿来 hahaha)

6. 떡국 (tteok guk)

떡국 is a Korean traditional soup that is made and eaten with the family.

Interesting facts~ 

 구정 and 신정: Korea has two New Year’s celebrations! On January 1st, the celebration of the solar new year is called 신정 (shin jeong), and the lunar new year celebrated in late January / early February is called 구정 (gu jeong)!

LANGUAGE LEARNING TIP

I have been watching television/listening to music in my target lang as part of my immersion™ and I have found that, instead of focusing really hard on hearing a couple of words I know, it’s better to just relax and let the words flow.

For me, it’s a really hard habit to break. But if you just try it, you will start to hear words and phrases that you know and you aren’t missing further info that you would have if you were still stuck trying to translate the word you recognise. You will find that as time passes, the words will translate almost automatically.

Don’t focus. Just watch/listen. Like you do in your native lang.

Even though Korean and Chinese aren’t related, there was a lot of influence on Korean vocabulary by Chinese. So here are some words that I found which are similar on both of these languages

What is FLSN?

FLSN stands for foreign language study network and is made for academic based, high school tumblr users studying a foreign language.

How will FLSN help me?

We run an exclusive group chat for the members, which is divided by language, so members studying a specific language can communicate with others their progress and can ask fluent users for help.  

We will also be creating special monthly projects that encourage members to study their language, and make progress.

We also have an evaluation every month as well, which helps track everyone’s goals and lets us know what we as a network, should do better.  

Members will also be posting their foreign language resources and will be available for everyone to look at in @FLSN’s navigation page  

Sounds Great! How can I join?

Applications for the first-semester cycle began May 31, 2017. Applications closed August 15, 2017. This is the first time FLSN has been running, so we opened applications for 2 months and a half. We will be re-opening applications near the second semester, around the end of January, for 3 weeks.  

Do I have to be a member to benefit from FLSN?  

No! If you aren’t interested in becoming a member, FLSN has currently around 200 members that post printables, notes, inspo, infographics, resources, etc. And are all under our navigation page.  

We are also accepting to post YOUR content, even if you aren’t a member with the hashtag #flsnpost, which will be posted to FLSN’s tumblr page.

Who runs FLSN?

The main Admin is Estrella (Ella) from ellastudyblog, and co-admin, Rachel, from studyblr. We are open to comments and concerns regarding the network.

hey how do you know whether you have been accepted into the study network? also what platform will it be taking place in?

everyone is accepted, but the network has not officially started. The other admin and I are working on that and will be released when applications are closed.
