I don't know if Giuls plans on making another appearance, but I'd quite like to see more of her and Joe bonding, perhaps once he is officially her step-father and maybe this is what prompts Yankee to consider another child bc she can see how great he is with kids, or it could be that Giuls doesn't know whether to refer to Joe as her dad/accidentally calls him dad and this triggers a discussion ... I trust that whatever you write will be great as always đ
A/N: Thank you for sending this in, Nony. I know it was from a million years ago, but I needed a fluffy little hit of the YLG universe and thought maybe other people did too. Enjoy!
You Look Good - Deleted Scene: Tea Party
December 2027
Joe was on his way back to bed early Saturday morning when he heard a sound that was out of place.
A rustle of glass and plastic. Like someone rummaging through a drawer on the other side of the door to the walk-in closet youâd turned into a vanity. He stopped outside the door and cocked his head.
âOh, noâŠâ he heard a familiar little voice that drew a smile over his lips. âThatâs a bad color.â
The door was already partially ajar, and it took barely a nudge to push it the rest of the way open. Giuliana was up on her knees on the tufted stool, squinting at her reflection in the mirror. Her big eyes found Joeâs the moment before her face brightened into a grin.
âGood morning, Joe!â she said cheerfully.
âGood morning,â he echoed, taking a few steps closer to the brightly lit corner. âWhatâs all this?â
âIâm being beautiful!â Giuliana exclaimed, showing off the rings sheâd found in your drawers that she was wearing on every finger and the handful of chains and pearls sheâd hung around her neck.
Joeâs smile widened. âYes, you are,â he agreed with a quiet laugh. âMy goodness, look at all that lipstick.â
Heâd barely noticed the jewelry sheâd pilfered. Too busy looking at the shades of purple and gold powders sheâd smudged around her eyes and the three different colors decorating her mouth.
âI canât find the right color,â she admitted with a frown.
âHasnât stopped you from trying, though,â he observed before he took another few steps closer. âYou know,â he began carefully, peering over her shoulder at the swath of cosmetics sheâd deposited on the glass tabletop. âI bet we can find a color that looks just right.â He picked up a few tubes of lipstick and gloss, squinting at the names and shades until he found the one he was looking for. âWhat do you think of this one?â he asked, popping off the top before he twisted the bottom to reveal the stick of soft pink color. âItâs not quite so bold as some of the colors you picked,â he admitted. âBut there are some sparkles.â
Giulianaâs smile returned. âI like sparkles!â
âLetâs give this one a try,â he suggested, and offered her his hand. âBut weâll need to take off some of the rest, alright?â
âNot all of it!â Giuls exclaimed.
âNo, no, of course not,â he assured her. âCâmon, I think your mumâs got some makeup wipes in the bathroom.â
Giuliana took his hand and let him lead her into the bathroom, where you took your makeup off every night. He hoisted her up onto the counter between the double sinks and opened the first drawer.
âI donât think she uses wipes anymore,â Giuls said after heâd checked three different drawers unsuccessfully. âTheyâre bad for the earth.â
Joe grinned. âThey are, arenât they?â he asked himself before he looked up into her painted face. âWhat does she use?â
âThat stuff.â The little girl pointed to a bottle of oily-looking water. âAnd one of those soft scrubbies,â she added, moving her finger to the stack of reusable cleansing pads.
âPerfect,â he said with a nod and closed the drawer after setting both items on the counter.
âNot all of it,â she warned again, moving her head back when heâd wet the pad with a few drops of makeup remover.
âI promise,â he said seriously. âNot all of it.â
âOkay,â Giuliana nodded and let him press the cloth to her mouth. He worked slowly, not wanting to hurt her while he tried to remove the smears of orangey-red, burgundy, and a shockingly bright shade of pink he couldnât imagine youâd ever worn in your life. âJoe?â
âHmm?â he asked before he tilted her chin up to reach the spots sheâd managed to get on her neck.
âHow far away is England?â
âUmm,â he caught the way his frown deepened as he tried to quantify it for her. âWell, itâs on the other side of the ocean, so itâs quite far.â
âHow long do we have to be on a plane?â
âProbably around eight hours.â
Her face wrinkled. âThatâs a lot of hours.â
He smiled. âIt is,â he agreed. âBut youâre such a good traveler,â he reminded her. âYouâve already got all your books and movies ready to go, havenât you?â He knew she didâheâd watched you packing her carry-on a few nights earlier, carefully selecting some of her favorites from the shelf.
âYeah,â she conceded with a shrug.
Joe stopped and studied her face. âWhatâs wrong, darling? Do you not want to fly?â He could have smacked himself for that question. Whether she wanted to fly or not was irrelevantâit wasnât like they could take a steamer ship to London at the end of the week.
âI donât know,â she moved her shoulders again. âI guess Iâm worried.â
He had to bite back a smile at the way she managed to sound like a forty-year-old woman sometimes. âWhat are you worried about?â
She waited until heâd wiped the last of the lipstick from her face before she spoke again. âDoes your whole family live in England?â
âMost of them,â he nodded. âYeah.â
âAnd am I going to meet all of them?â
âIâm hoping so,â he said. âIs that alright?â
âI guess so,â she agreed, noncommittal, before she straightened up. âCan you put the pink on me now, please?â
He smiled again. âAbsolutely.â
Giuliana held remarkably still for a four-year-old while he drew the stick of shimmery pink over her bottom lip. She needed no prompting to mash her lips together to spread the color. Once sheâd finished, she looked over her shoulder at her reflection and brightened into another big smile. âI like this color,â she declared.
âYes, I think it suits you,â he agreed. âNow, what were you getting so dressed up for?â
âOh!â she turned back around to face him. âI was having a fancy tea party. Do you want to come?â
Joe glanced down at his rumpled pajamas. âDo I need to change my clothes?â
Giuliana giggled and shook her head. âYouâre okay.â
âAlright then,â he helped her down from the counter and motioned to the open bathroom door. âLead the way.â
The table and chairs in her playroom were both much too small for him, but he bit the bullet and sat in one anyway, allowing his knees to practically bump into his chin. Giuls was committed to her role as host, making sure each of her stuffed animals had a full cup of invisible tea and a plastic cookie before she sat down across from him.
âCheers,â Joe held his cup and saucer and tapped the cup to hers before pretending to take a sip. âMm,â he nodded. âFine cuppa tea, that.â
She giggled again. âYou talk funny.â They ate their snacks and sipped their tea in a brief companiable silence before she said, âDoes everyone really drink tea in England all the time.â
âMost people do.â
âDid Mama drink tea when she lived there?â
âShe did,â Joe nodded again and set his cup down. âShe still drank her coffee, too, but yeah. She drank tea with the rest of us.â A thought occurred to him. âDo you know who taught her how to make tea the right way?â
Giulsâ head tilted to the side. âYou?â
âNope,â he shook his head. âIt was my mum.â
The idea settled over her face, pulling her features into another thoughtful frown. âCould your mum teach me how to make tea?â
âOh, Iâm sure she would love to,â he said with full confidence. Because his mother had been bothering him daily with questions about Giulianaâwhat she liked to read, to watch, to eat, what things she might like to do if they could go out together for an afternoon. Arranging a lesson on the finer points of tea-brewing would be no problem. He waited another beat. âAre youâŠlooking forward to meeting my mum?â
Giuls nodded, still looking preoccupied, before she asked, âDo you think sheâll like me?â
He didnât bother to hide his smile that time as he shook his head. âNo, I donât think sheâll like you. I think sheâll love you. I think my whole family will love you.â
âHow come?â
He laughed quietly. âHow come?â he repeated. âBecause who wouldnât love you?â
She still looked unconvinced. âBut they donât know me.â
âNo,â he agreed with a tilt of his head. âThey donât. But they know your mumâand they love herââ
âEven though she doesnât live there anymore?â
âYep,â he nodded again. âEven when they didnât think theyâd ever see her again,â he added. âThey still loved her.â In the ten years heâd spent away from you, heâd lost track of how many times your name had been brought up in conversation in a failed attempt to seem casual. His mother, Nana, his father, and even his stepsiblings on occasion. Dâyou ever hear from her? Or, I wonder how sheâs doing?Â
âThatâs crazy,â Giuliana decided.
âWell,â he shrugged. âI still loved her, too,â he reminded her. âSo it canât be that crazy.â
That confession brought a smile back to her face. âAnd them loving MamaâŠthatâs enough to make them love me?â
âItâs just a start,â he clarified. âTheyâre going to love you even more once they get to know you.â
She squinted at him. âAre you sure?â
He laughed again and placed a hand over his heart. âI promise.â
A creak from the hallway startled them both and pulled their attention to the open door of the playroom, where you were leaning casually, biting back a smile. Giuliana waved cheerfully. âGood morning, Mama!â
âGood morning,â you echoed as your eyes widened at the state of her face and costume. âDon't you look beautiful! â
âJoe picked the lipstick,â she said.
âDid he?â you grinned and took a few steps into the room. âWell, heâs got a good eye.â You bent and kissed her forehead before surveying the table. âIs there room for one more at this tea party?â
âUh-huh!â Giuls looked at the three other seats filled by stuffed animals before she grabbed the stuffed crocodile wearing a straw hat. âMr. Chompers canât stay anyway,â she decided. âHe has to go to work. You can have his place.â
You snorted quietly and sat in the tiny seat between Giuliana and Joe, both of whom seemed entirely unaware that youâd been outside of the room, listening to them quietly melt your heart, for the last ten minutes.

Author's Note: And at last, we have reached the conclusion of this little therapy project. The fic was posed to me as a way to write myself out of a dark spot in the JQ fandom and hey! It worked! We came out on the other side relatively unscathed.
Thank you to anyone and everyone still reading. Thank you for the sweet comments that kept me going and for rooting for Hazel and for Joe to be the kind of guy she deserves. Honestly, the most fun part of this fic was making the social media and text posts to accompany the story, so I thought I'd give us all one last hurrah for this final chapter.
My cup runneth over, loves.
PS: Selena has always been my faceclaim for Hazel, so enjoy her brief cameo here đ

epilogue.
Weâre going to let the credits roll through a montage of social media posts and text exchanges that stretch over the next four years.
If you really want to get the full effect, play âCome What Mayâ by The Scene Aesthetic and scroll slowly, imagining names are popping up alongside these screenshots.
And then the song fades as the screen goes black againâŠ
Only to fade in on a dark bedroom with a white noise machine chugging along, trying to drown out the noise of downtown London.
A phone lights up and begins to buzz against the bedside table. From beneath a fluffy duvet, a hand reaches out to grab it.
âHello?â The bleary voice belongs to a young man weâve never seen before. He sits up groggily in bed and pushes a black eye mask up onto his forehead.
âDaniel,â Vicâs voice cuts through the room and makes him sit up straighter, even in his disheveled, half-asleep state. âAre you awake?â
âWell, now I am,â he grumbles, rubbing his eyes with his free hand. âWhat is it?â he asks his boss before he frowns and tries in vain to squint at his watch in the dark. âAnd what time is it?â
âItâs just gone twoââ
âJesusâŠâ he mutters under his breath. âWhat happened?â
âHave you looked at your phone recently?â
Daniel lets out a heavy sigh. âNo,â he says plainly. âIâve been a bit busy looking at the backs of my eyelids, Vic.â
âWell, you need to be awake for this.â
âYou know I was given the week off, right?â he asks. âHazelâs Rules?â Hazel has always been incredibly firm about his not making himself available while theyâre on holiday. And at least one weekend each month. And three full weeks out of each year. âAre you certain this canât wait until Monday?â
âJust look,â Vic demands.
He inhales steadily and pulls the phone from his ear. There is a parade of notifications that he ignores to swipe into the most pressingâthe red badge above the Instagram logo thatâs spinning numbers like a slot machine, climbing higher by the second.
âWhat am Iââ he stops. âOh!â
âOh?â Vic practically barks. âThatâs all you have to say?â
âWell, Iâll say congratulations,â he reasons after a moment.
âDid you know about this?â
âUh,â he frowns. âI knew he was going to propose after she passed the bar,â he says. âHeâs had that ring forââ
âYes, I know how long heâs had that ring,â Vic snaps. âI just thought he would have mentioned something about it before he went and told the whole world sheâd said âyesâ.â She lets out an exasperated sigh. âGod, he just loves to make work for me. Iâve got to get something out about this as soon as possible. I need to callââ
âVic?â Daniel asks, biting back a smile. Not because he loves listening to his boss spin up her PR machine, but because heâs thinking about the look on Joeâs face when he showed him the diamond ring heâd picked out for Hazel six months ago. How heâd looked genuinely worried when heâd asked, âDâyou think sheâll like it? You think she might say âyesâ?â
As if there was even half a chance that she might say 'no'.
âVic?â he tries again when she still hasnât stopped listing news outlets and points of contact theyâll need to divide and conquer.
âWhat?â
He clears his throat and looks down at the photo a second time. Posted from Florence, three hours ago. He smiles again. Right as the calendar would have switched over to Hazelâs birthday. âMaybe we could just let them enjoy this for a few days?â he suggests. âWe can go to work on it when theyâre back from their holiday on Monday.â
Thereâs a long pause from Vicâs townhouse. Daniel prepares himself to be snapped at again, to be told there is no time to lose, and to get Joe on the phone immediately and figure out why he thought he could drop a bomb like this without telling anyone.
âAlright,â she says finally.
He blinks. âYeah?â
âYeah,â she agrees, sounding tired. âYouâre right. Text him and tell him weâre both taking the weekend offâweâll talk on Monday.â
Danielâs grin widens. âOn Monday,â he echoes. âGânight, Vic.â
She hangs up, and he swipes into his messaging app to tap out the intended text, but stops after a moment. If he knows Hazelâand after four years of being in her life via Joe, he likes to think he knows her pretty wellâshe would have turned off both of their phones the moment after Joe hit âpublishâ on that little birthday announcement.
So Daniel powers down his work phone entirely and falls happily back to sleep.
Fade to black.
Remaining credits roll.
The End.

I love you and I keese you all! I hope you like this!

Look, we could walk through the whole next day at the beach shot by shot. We could, really. But weâre running kind of short on time, and that type of detail is always the first on the cutting room floor anyway, right? So, letâs save the editors the struggle and make it a montage.
Thereâs the establishing shot of the shoreline, of course. Itâs a beautiful day at Big River. Perfect weather, a surprising lack of crowds, minimal fighting between all four children, and, honestly, best of all, Joeâs leg to rest your head on while you read your book on the blanket in the sand.
Heâs almost too good with your siblings. One of those rare adults who doesnât seem to mind actually playing with them when they beg him to come into the water or pick a side of whatever game theyâve chosen.
We can cross-fade a few shots here to really drive home the point.
Joe carries Hugo around on his shoulders for more than half the afternoon. He keeps an eye on how often everyone needs to have their sunscreen reapplied and manages to scoop Maddie up right before sheâs taken out by a wave twice her size.
It's nice to see. Refreshing. A glimpse at the Joe you used to know, who would stop whatever he was doing for a child who wanted to hug him or take a photo. The one who used to happily lead the tours for the Make-a-Wish kids when they wanted to visit a Marvel set, and who never looked bored when a ten-year-old rambled on way too long trying to ask a question at a convention.
It also makes your job of keeping an eye on everyone much, much easier than if youâd been by yourself.
Thatâs enough montage. We can slow down again.
Thereâs a predictable plea for ice cream once youâve announced itâs time to start packing up. Your shoulders are slightly pink, and you have a feeling theyâre going to be full-on burned by the time you wake up tomorrow. While youâre pulling your t-shirt back on, your phone starts to buzz in your bag.
âItâs Mama Jenny,â Connor says as he hands it to you, ensuring itâs covered in sand by the time it reaches your ear.
âHey, Mom,â you say as you hold it to your face, trying not to wince as the grains of sand scrape your cheek.
âHi, baby,â she says warmly in a way that tells you she had a good day at work. You check your watch. Itâs just after fiveâsheâs probably enjoying the quiet house with a glass of fruity wine on the patio. That image is enough to decide to give her an extra hour to herself by giving in to the figurative screams for ice cream. âHowâs it going?â
âGood,â you assure her, reaching over to grab Malikâs sunglasses the moment before Hugo can step on them. âWhatâs up?â
âIâm wondering if I can ask a favor?â
âSureâŠâ you answer slowly. âOf course you can.â
âI know youâve been on kid-duty all day, so you are more than free to say no,â she begins. âBut it seems like Peter and I havenât been on a real date in a whole age. Some of his friends from Oakland are in town for a few days and wanted us to meet them for dinner.â
You blink. âTonight?â
âDo you already have plans?â
âNo,â you answer honestly. Because you donât have plans. Not really. Youâd been hoping that you could spend some more time with Joe, just the two of you, to figure out what any of the last 24 hours means, but you havenât had the chance to broach the topic yet. You cough and shake your head. âNo, Mom. Itâs fine. You should go outâhave a good time.â
Joe glances over as you hang up and toss your phone back in your bag. âEverything okay?â
âUh-huh,â you nod and offer a smile. âJust giving Mom and Peter the night off.â You look up at four curious faces. âYou guys are stuck with me tonight, too.â
Itâs a relief to see four big smiles before Malik asks, âCan we have pizza for dinner then?â
âOh yeah,â you assure him as Joe helps you to your feet. âPizza is definitely happening. Connor, can you help Mal fold the blanket up, please? Maddie, hold Hugoâs hand when we get to the parking lot, okay?â You stop and look down with a frown. âAnd buddy,â you laugh at the youngest of the bunch. âYour shoes are on the wrong feet.â
âI got you, mate,â Joe says and lets go of your hand to kneel and help Hugo swap his shoes.
âFanks, Joe,â the littlest boy says while he steadies himself on Joeâs shoulder and lets him undo and redo the Velcro straps of his sandals onto the right feet.
You have to bite back a smile as Joe stands again and ruffles Hugoâs dark curls. The blanket is foldedâor close enough, youâre not being pickyâand everything is packed up in relatively short order to head back to the car.
Joeâs hand finds yours again as you cross the parking lot, but you wait until everyone has piled into the SUV before you close the door and turn back to him. âI was going to ask if you wanted to go out tonightâbut now Iâm pulling a double-shift on Big Sister detail,â you say with a sigh. âSo, I donât expect you toââ
Thereâs more you can say, plans to let him off the hook, but he silences you with a sweet kiss that steals your breath and momentarily erases the thoughts from your head. âStop tryinâ to get rid of me, would you?â he asks quietly when he pulls away with a small smile. âItâs giving me a complex.â
You laugh and shake your head. âI had slightly more exciting plans for you in mind than 12 hours of babysitting.â
âTheyâll keep,â he assures you in a tone that makes you melt just a little bit. âIâve got five months of Hazel-free time to make up for. I donât care what we do.â
âEven pizza and stupid kidsâ movies?â
His smile widens. âI love pizza and stupid kidsâ movies.â
You roll your eyes. âFine, fine,â you relent with an easy-going, affectionate sigh. âIf you really want to.â
âI really do,â he promises, shining on a touch of the puppy-dog eyes just to be safe. âBut I also really want to take a shower and change my clothes.â
You nod in agreement. Youâve got a date with the shower as soon as you get home, too. âIâm going to get them some ice cream,â you say with a glance toward the car where all four children are doing a terrible job of pretending they arenât spying through the tinted windows. âSo why donât you come back over aroundâŠseven?â
Joe leans in to kiss you again. âSeven is great,â he says. âYou want me to just pick up food on the way over?â
You feel dangerously close to a swoon at the thought of having a task crossed off your list. âThat,â you tell him, resting your hands on his chest to lean most of your weight against him. âWould be amazing.â
Heâs back in his rental car before you open the driverâs side door of the SUV and slide behind the wheel.
âWere you and Joe kissing?â Maddie asks as you start the car.
You pause and consider lying before you shake the idea away. âActually, yes.â
Thereâs a moment of silence from the first row of the backseat before you see her shrug in the rearview mirror. âOkay.â
You canât help but snort before you pull out of the space and head toward the nearest ice cream shop.
Youâre not sure how it happens, but somehow, by the time Joe arrives with three extra-large pizzas at five after seven, youâve managed to ensure that everyone has had a shower and that all the clothes full of sand and sunscreen are running through the washing machine.
Itâs one of those low-level miracles. The universe is deciding you deserve an easy win after all the shit sheâs put you through.
If your mother cares about Joe coming back over once she and Peter are gone, she didnât let on as she hugged and kissed her children in order from youngest to oldest before heading out the door. But she may think that an evening spent caretaking is about the least sexy activity you could have invited Joe to join you in, so thereâs really nothing to worry about.
And mostly, sheâs right.
Dinner is filled with predictable squabbling, dramatic gagging over the sacrilege of eating vegetables on pizza, and Connor dropping an entire cup of grape juice all over the kitchen floor.
But at the very least, you have one ace in your back pocket when the topic of whatâs going to be on the TV once Hugo has been put to bed at eight-thirty.
âHazel, tell her what Mama Jenny said,â Malik is whining as you come back down the stairs. He drops his voice when you put your finger to your lips and push your hand down like youâre forcibly lowering his volume. âMaddie has to go to bed too; sheâs too little to watch Red Hook Road with us.â
âYes, I can,â Maddie exclaims. âI only get scared sometimes and even thenââ
âItâs okay, itâs okay,â you hold up both hands this time. âWeâre all going to watch Red Hook Road, alright? All of us together. And even better, weâre going to start at the first episode so that nobody misses anything. But Miss Maddie,â You interrupt the sounds of surprised excitement and point to the kitchen, where Joe is loading the dishwasher. âJoe has something he wants you to see before we do.â
âWhat is it?â Connor asks immediately.
âI want to see too,â Malik insists as the two of them follow Maddie across the living room.
You hang back and lean against the door frame, watching as Joe sits down at the table and pulls out his phone. Maddie climbs into his lap like sheâs known him forever and waits patiently while he pulls up the video heâd shown you earlier when heâd made this suggestion.
âWhoâs that?â Connor asks, looking over Joeâs shoulder to squint at the screen.
âThatâs my friend, Jamie,â he says and then swipes to a photo. âAnd thatâs the monster he played on TV.â
âReally?â Malikâs eyes widen in surprise. âHe looks so cool!â
Joe looks down and peers at Maddie. âDo you want to see how they made him look like that?â She nods quickly, and he pulls the video up again. A time-lapse from a million years ago condensing the four hours Jamie spent in a makeup chair each day to turn into Vecna on the Stranger Things lot into about a minute and a half.
You watch with a smile playing on your lips as Maddie, Connor, and Malik all watch, mesmerized by the speedy transformation. When itâs over, Maddie looks back up at Joe. âThatâs from the movies?â
âMmhmm,â he nods and gives her the phone to advance the progress bar herself. She slides it back and forth a few times, changing Jamie into Vecna and back again in the span of an instant. âHe looks really scary, doesnât he?â
âReally scary,â Maddie agrees before looking up again. âBut I like scary stuff.â
âI do too,â Joe assures her. âItâs quite fun to be scared, isnât it?â She nods again, looking like sheâs finally found someone who understands her. âBut if you get too scared when youâre watching your showâor maybe later, when youâre trying to get to sleepâyou can remember that itâs just makeup, right? Itâs not real. And underneath some big scary monster, itâs just a silly little guy like Jamie.â
It's such a simple solution for this argument youâve been arbitrating for half the summer, that you canât believe you didnât think of it yourself. And solve the problem it does. Halfway through the second episode, Malik grabs the tablet from its place on the charging mat and pulls up YouTube to see if thereâs a behind-the-scenes video of the monster of the week.
It sends him down a rabbit hole of clicks, and after twenty minutes of looking up special effects and prosthetics, neither Malik, Connor, nor Maddie notices when you turn off the television.
You let them stay up later than usual, allowing them to explore this newfound corner of the internet until ten before you herd everyone up the stairs to their bedrooms. The boys require no special tuck-ins or bedtime rituals, so you leave them to brush their teeth and get beneath the covers while you head down the hall to check on Maddie.
âNeed me to check the closets or under the bed?â you ask as she climbs into her bed.
She pulls up the comforter to her chin and shakes her head with a grin. âNope. Iâm good.â
âOkay,â you say as you turn off the light on her dresser.
âBut maybe still the nightlight,â she adds quickly. âJust in case.â
âYou got it, sweetie.â You bend to kiss the top of her head. âThanks for hanging out with me today.â
Maddie smiles up at you, and two chunks of soft blonde hair dislodge from the French braid you gave her after her shower. âHazel?â
âHmm?â
âIs Joe your boyfriend?â
The question stops you after youâve plugged the stained glass nightlight into the wall. âUm. IâŠdonât know,â you answer honestly.
âWhy not?â
You open your mouth and close it again as a few different answers flutter through your mind. âItâsâŠuhââ
âComplicated?â Maddie finishes for you with a deeply unimpressed look.
You canât help but smile. âIt might be, yeah.â
âHe came all the way from England to kiss you,â she says, smiling when her assessment makes you laugh. âThatâs not complicated. Thatâs a boyfriend.â
You laugh again. âIâll keep that in mind,â you promise and give her another kiss for good measure. âIn the meantime, you need to go to sleep and dream some good dreams, okay?â
âOkay,â Maddie snuggles back under her covers and is sound asleep almost before youâre out in the hall.
Joe has straightened up the living room and consolidated the leftover pizza into one box by the time youâre back downstairs. He joins you on the couch as you flop down with a heavy, contented sigh.
âYou okay?â he asks, letting an arm drop around your shoulders.
It should feel more awkward, you think. This sudden physical affection. These comforting intimacies. It should be strange and a little clumsy, trying to figure out how your body fits against and with another person.
But itâs not.
Maybe itâs because youâve known Joe for so longâthat you know so very much about himâthat makes it seem so easy and familiar. Maybe itâs because at times, youâve felt like you know him better than you know yourself. Or because every part of his life was tangled up with every part of yours for so many years, it was starting to be difficult to tease apart that tangled knot and find the strings of who you were before him.
âYeah,â you say after youâve taken a moment to consider it. You glance up with a smile. âThank you.â
He smiles back. âFor what?â
âFor spending the day at the beach with us,â you say as you stretch your neck to deliver a soft kiss to his lips. âAnd for what you did for Maddieâshowing her those pictures and videos.â You kiss him again. âIt was pretty dreamy of you.â
His one arm tightens a little bit around your shoulder as he slides his free hand over your cheek and into your hair, pulling you closer for a long, slow kiss that flips your belly with excitement and has you fisting the material of his t-shirt as you sigh into his mouth. âIâve wanted to do that all day,â he whispers against your lips when you finally pull away for a breath.
Your eyes are still closed as you hum a little sound of amusement and feel him tap the tip of his nose to yours. âIs there anything else youâve been wantingânow that weâre all alone and you have the chance?â
âThere is one thing, actually,â he says, letting his thumb brush over your cheek as he ducks his head to press his lip to the underside of your jaw, ghosting a kiss over your pulse before he kisses over to your ear. âI want to know what you taste like.â
You swallow hard as you pull back just enough to meet his eyes again. âWhat did you just say?â
The edge of his lips twitches in a little smirk. âI think you heard me.â
You should probably say no. You should probably tell him that heâs just going to have to wonder until he can bring you back to a hotel room thatâs been cleaned more recently than the Clinton administration. You should remind himâand yourselfâthat your parents are not night owls and theyâll probably be home any minute.
But when you open your mouth to share any of these protests, all that comes out is, âCome upstairs.â
You donât think youâre any louder than usual when you climb the stairs together, but you still hold a finger to your lips as you open your bedroom door and pull him inside behind you. Joe takes a moment to look around when youâve locked the door and turned on the lights; thereâs a little smile playing on his lips as he logs your old band posters and well-loved stuffed animals on the armchair in the corner.
You stop him before he can make a move to study the photos you still have stuck to your corkboard from high school and college, shaking your head as you turn him back to face you. âYou donât need to see my ugly duckling phase right now,â you assure him as you step in close.
He grins again. âI find it hard to believe you ever had an ugly duckling phase.â
âYouâre just going to have to trust me on that one,â you reply as you stretch onto your tiptoes to kiss him.
He doesnât argue any further as one of his hands slides into your hair while the other anchors at your hip. You feel yourself melting into him almost immediately, walking backward to bring him with you to the bed. He sits next to you, and the hand that had been on your hip slides up slowly to squeeze your breast, prompting a quiet sound of approval thatâs muffled against his lips.
Joeâs smile breaks the kiss, and he glances to the door once before looking back at you. âI thought we were being quiet,â he reminds you before he ducks back in to press his lips to your cheek.
âWe are,â you respond, tilting your head already to encourage his next kiss to land on your jaw.
âWell, you better try harder,â he murmurs against your skin, nuzzling the spot beneath your ear. âBecause I havenât even done anything yet.â
His hands slip under your shirt and span your waist, sliding over to your back as he leans into you, pushing you gently to lie down amidst your sheets and pillows. He goes with you, trailing soft kisses over your neck. You want to just lie back and relax, give into that slow-building fire heâs started beneath your skin and let him do whatever he wants, but your brain isnât getting the hint.
You feel an unmistakable flutter of nerves taking root the longer you lie there, while suddenly this feels like an incredibly bad idea. âDid you hear me lock my door?â
Joe nods into the crook of your neck while his one hand slides down to your hip and coaxes your legs up onto the bed. âYeah,â he says quietly. âSoon as you closed it.â
âOkay,â you exhale and then glance over to the bedside table, where the light feels way too bright and like itâs begging your mother to stop and knock on the door to ask how the night went before she goes to sleep. Trying to be casual, you reach your hand toward the lamp, groping a little too hard for the wheel switch on the cord for Joe not to notice.
He pulls back from your collarbone with a furrow in his brow. âWhatâs wrong?â
âNothing,â you say quickly. Too quickly. You scrunch your face in a guilty wince as his doubtful expression only intensifies. âReally,â you try again, attempting to season it with a sprinkle of the truth this time. âI just donât want my mom to think Iâm still awake. If she sees the light on when they pull upâŠâ
You trail off as Joe pushes himself up onto one arm and eyes you with a curious tilt of his head. âYour roomâs at the back of the house,â he says with a glance toward the window that, even if it had been visible from the street, had the blackout curtains drawn. He studies you a moment longer before the corner of his mouth lifts in a half-smile. âAre you nervous about doing this with the lights on?â he asks with a little hint of disbelief.
You swallow and try to shake your head. âNo, itâsââ you stop with a sigh. âMaybe? A little?â
He lets out a quiet little laugh. âWe had the lights on last night.â
âYeah, but that wasâŠâ You fumble for an excuse for this sudden flash of anxiety. âI donât know. This justâŠfeels moreâŠâ
Vulnerable? Exposed? A few different choices type themselves out on your tongue before theyâre deleted. None of them feels right.
Joe lets you trail off for a moment before he leans in to cover your lips with his in a soft, gentle kiss while his thumb traces a soothing trail back and forth along the bottom of your jaw. âHazel,â he says as he pulls back. His voice lowers with seriousness. âDo you want me to stop?â
âNo,â you say again, and even though itâs as quick an answer as before, it doesnât feel like youâre covering. âI donât. Iâm justâŠâ You exhale again. âYeah. Nervous.â
His brow creases again. âWhy?â
Your mouth opens and then closes again as you consider what youâd have to do to rewind the clock so that you never made everything so fucking weird to begin with. âI donâtâŠâ
âYou donâtâŠâ he echoes your uncertain trail off. âWant to do this?â
âThatâs not what Iâm trying to say.â
âThenâŠwhat are you trying to say?â he asks before he lets one hand trail over your neck and to the top of your shoulders. âAnd what can we do to make you relax?â he goes on. âYouâre stiff as a board.â
When you look up to find his unfairly pretty eyes still trying to read you, you find yourself unable to stop speaking. Itâs like someone has taken a crowbar to the glass tank where youâve been stuffing all of the doubts you donât want to admit youâve been having since the second his lips touched yours in your backyard. âI donât want to be so tense,â you admit. âBut. Look. Itâs just that youâve had the advantage of having had a considerable number of partners compared to meââ
âIs that what this is about?â he breaks in. âAre we comparing body counts now?â
âNo,â you say, unable to help but laugh at the idea that he thinks you care about that number now, after everything the two of you have been through together. âI justâŠI donât want you to beâŠâ you bite your bottom lip. âDisappointed. OrâŠI donât know. Underwhelmed.â The little lines around his eyes deepen as he squints in confusion. âAnd last night was so fun,â you continue quickly. âBut what if thatâs just because it wasâŠa novelty orââ
Joe silences you with another kiss. Youâre grateful for the interruption because you truly have no idea how you were going to end that thought. âI need you to understand something,â he says once heâs pulled away. âI have considered you many things over the years. But never once have I thought of you as a novelty.â
âJoeâŠâ
âNo,â he says firmly, holding your chin in place to keep you from averting your eyes. âYou need to listen to me.â
âOkay,â you exhale. âIâm listening.â
âWe donât have to do anything if you donât want to.â His dark eyes flick toward the door and then back to yours. âI can go right now if thatâs whatââ
âNo,â you insist, instinctively curling one leg around his hip to keep him from moving. âThatâs not what I want.â
âWhat do you want?â
You swallow again. âI want toâŠnot be overthinking this,â you say after a moment. âI want to enjoy being with you, without my stupid brain going a thousand miles a minute.â
He nods slowly, digesting this for a moment before his lips lift again. âAnd if I told you I had a suggestion for how I might help you stop thinking quite so muchâŠâ You let out another quiet laugh and find it just a little difficult to keep holding his gaze. âHazel,â he says again, and thereâs something about the way he says your name that makes your stomach give an inconvenient little flip. âIf weâre talking about one of us having advantages over the other, I have to remind you that you know everything about me.â
âYes,â you agree. âI do.â
âBut I canât say the same,â he goes on. âAnd Iâd really, really like the chance to start closing that gap and learning at least a few more things about you right now.â
Your teeth press into your bottom lip for a moment before you let the rolling boil of anxiety in your stomach settle to something more pleasant. âOkay,â you say softly and stretch your neck to brush your lips against his. âBut we really do need to be quiet.â
Joe trades you one more sweet, soft kiss on your mouth before he returns his attention to the crook of your neck. âThatâs on you, darling,â he murmurs against your skin. âMy mouth is going to be plenty occupied.â
You snort quietly and have to press your lips together to muffle a sound of approval when his hands slide back under your clothes. His fingers trace the waistband of your shorts, and itâs only too easy to lift your hips and let him slide them off.
His lips find yours again as he shifts the full weight of his body on top of you, encouraging your legs to wrap loosely around his waist. His tongue slips into your mouth, slowly circling yours while his one hand trails down to draw slow, soothing strokes over the outside of your bare thigh. Again, you find yourself marveling at how familiar this feels, how easy it is once you let yourself enjoy it. He teases his fingers at your hip, curling them experimentally under your panties.
Youâre nodding before he asks permission, but Joeâs insisting on taking his time. Heâs almost painstakingly slow to break away from your lips and start trailing kisses down your neck and over your chest. He seems to debate for a moment whether or not heâs going to take your top off, but settles for pushing the hem of it up and over your breasts so he can drop a path of sweet kisses between them and down your belly.
He lingers around your navel, alternating the pressure of his lips with light scrapes of his teeth. Playful little bites that have you squirming and fighting hard not to squeal out loud. You can feel him smile against your skin as he slides his hands up your thighs and hooks his fingers under the sides of your panties to finally take them off. He pushes your knees apart as he shuffles down the bed and then settles between them. His lips are soft as they land on your inner thighs when he wraps his arms around your legs, holding you open. âSo,â he murmurs into your skin, interrupting himself with a kiss after each word, âfucking,â he turns his head to deliver a kiss to your other thigh, âgorgeous.â
You swallow hard, trying to remember how to breathe when he lifts his dark eyes to meet yours for a long, electric moment, before he shifts lower and presses his lips to your clit in a soft, slow kiss that rivals the ones heâs been pressing against your mouth all day.
And just like when he kissed you the first time, your brain and body have to take a moment to get on the same page. Because yeah, you figured he had a talent for this type of thing (men with reputations like his have to earn them somehow, after all), but youâd never allowed yourself to imagine he might be this good. This thorough.
You donât know if anyoneâs ever been this focused on making you feel goodâif anyoneâs ever made you feel like you were something warm and delicious. A treat worth waiting for. But thatâs what Joe is doing. Taking his time, swirling and flicking his tongue over your clit in between soft kisses and quiet moans that you can feel more than hear.
Two fingers pet your entrance, up and down, not pushing in, just tempting, while his tongue is busy tasting and exploring your cunt. Itâs enough to make your hips buck involuntarily, and you have to close your eyes and force yourself to take a deep breath when you feel him turn his head and smile against your leg. âHuh-uh,â he says softly, stretching his neck to place another kiss just below your navel. âStay still. Iâm gonna give you what you want.â
You press your lips together firmly, forcing a whine into a nearly-silent whimper, and he scrapes his teeth lightly over the pattern of freckles on your inner thigh. A little love bite whose sting he soothes with another kiss before he leans in again. His flattened tongue drags from your entrance to your clit in one slow, filthy stripe.
Another groan vibrates against your pussy when he tastes you, and this time, you have to cover your mouth to keep from crying out. It doesnât get any easier to keep quiet when he seals his lips around your clit and sucks, soft at first, then harder, pulsing his tongue in tight, rapid flicks.
One finger slides inside, curling right to that sweet spot.
Another finger joins, stretching you open, pumping slowly while his mouth works your clit like it owes him money.
You feel that pressure coil tighterâŠand tighterâŠ
He crooks his fingers faster, presses his tongue flat and relentlessly.
Your back arches. Your heels dig into the mattress. You donât remember sliding your free hand into his hair, but youâre suddenly beyond grateful heâs grown it out. Your fingers tighten in his curls so hard he lets out a muffled groan that you barely register.
The world whites out: a sharp, electric snap at your core that sizzles through every limb.
Your whole body clamps around his fingers, pulsing hot and trembling.
Joe keeps licking, gentle now, riding every aftershock until youâre shaking and pushing at his head, oversensitive and breathless.
Youâre still blinking spots from your eyes when he wipes his face and crawls back up the bed to look at you again. His smile is slow, but wide and easy, and the sight of it makes your belly flip. âWhatâŠ?â you ask, keeping your voice down before you cover your mouth to muffle a giggle of giddy relief thatâs threatening to bubble past your lips.
He raises his eyebrows. âYou feeling a little more relaxed now?â he asks.
You drop your hand, bite your bottom lip, and nod. âYeah,â you say, when youâve caught your breath again. âA little.â
Joe is still grinning as he leans down to kiss you again.
The house is quiet and still when you walk him out the next morning, just before seven. You figured that was a safe enough timeâeveryone always sleeps in on Saturdaysâusually the house stays dormant until at least eight oâclock.
But still, you hold your finger to your lips again and point out the creakiest stair to ensure a stealthy exit. He stops at the front door and opens his mouth like heâs about to say something, then closes it again and gestures for you to follow him to the front porch.
You do, closing the door behind you as you step into the cool, foggy morning. âSorry for the sneaking,â you still keep your voice low, crossing your arms over your chest to keep off the chill. âI just donât really want to deal with a side-eye right now.â
âNo problem,â he shrugs with a smile tucked at the corner of his mouth. âI just didnât want to leave without a proper goodbye.â
You canât help but smile when he steps in close again and slides his thumb over your cheekbone the moment before he lowers his lips to yours in a soft kiss. Youâre already starting to feel dangerously close to addicted to these kisses he gives. Youâre not sure what youâre going to do when he goes back to work and leaves you without a way to get your fix several dozen times a day.
But you donât want to think about that right now, so you donât. You just lean into him and kiss him back, relishing the way he smells like your room now. Like your sheets and pillows and all your things. âAre you going back to the Sand Dollar?â You ask when you pull back for a breath.
He nods, still keeping you close enough that his nose brushes the tip of yours. âJust to pack, though. Found a better spot.â
âOh, really?â
âI did,â he smiles. âMade the booking all on my own and everything.â
âIâm so proud of you,â you say with a grin. âMore than half a star rating?â
âAt least two stars,â he counters, making you laugh before he kisses you again. âIf itâs up to your standards, Miss Donovan,â he steps back and takes hold of your hand, bringing the tops of your fingers to his lips in a chivalrous gesture that makes you want to blush. âMaybe I could convince you to come and stay a few days?â
âMaybe,â you reply, as if thereâs a chance you wonât say agree. âIâll have to see it first. Check out the Yelp reviews.â
Joe lets out a quiet laugh and shakes his head. He moves like heâs about to turn and head for his car before he doubles back and takes your face in his hands. âYouâre killing me, Hazel,â he says before planting one final, sound kiss on your lips. âI hope you know that.â
âConsider it payback,â you joke when he pulls away a second time. âAnd text me later,â you add. âOnce youâve settled into this mysterious new upgraded location.â
You watch as he ambles away and behind the wheel of the rental car he parked across the street, waiting until heâs driven off with a final wave goodbye before you turn and slip back inside.
Between the adrenaline spike of having to sneak him out and the morning breeze, youâre wide awake. No point in going back upstairs to try and return to sleepâyou know your body well enough to know that it just isnât going to happen. So instead, you lock the front door again and head for the kitchenâ
--and nearly duck back out again when you find your parents sitting at the table, sharing the paper like they always do.
âJoe get to his car okay?â Peter asks conversationally as he gets to his feet and approaches the coffee pot.
You close your eyes and nod with a heavy exhale. âUh-huh,â you say, bringing up a hand to rub your eyelids.
When you bring your hand down, your mother has folded down the top half of her newspaper and is serving you a Look with a capital âLâ over the tops of her glasses. âPretty sure I raised you better than this, Hazel Rose,â she says evenly.
Your nose scrunches as you drop into the chair across from her. âMom. Could we justââ
âSomeone spends the night in our home, and you donât even invite him to stay for breakfast?â she asks with an incredulous tone before she clicks her tongue twice against the roof of her mouth and shakes her head. âDonât know where you got those manners from, young lady, but it was certainly not from me.â You stare at one another for a long moment before she lets a brief smile turn the edge of her mouth upward. âBaby, if you want to sneak a man in and out of my house without me knowing about it, next time make sure he parks farther away than across the street.â
You open your mouth to argue before closing it again and nodding once. âYeah, okay, thatâs fair.â
Thereâs something undeniably sweet about how excited Joe is to show you the place heâs booked. Heâs so proud of himself when he calls you later and asks if he can pick you up for the night. Heâs walking a fine line between ridiculous and endearing when he tells you to close your eyes half a mile from your destination.
âSeriously?â
âSeriously,â he echoes from the driverâs seat, mirroring your look before he grins again. âCâmon, it makes it more fun.â
You let out a heavy sigh and relent, if only because his smile looks so much better these daysâso relaxed and comfortable and unforcedâthat youâll do just about anything to keep it on his face as often as possible.
âNo peeking,â he instructs, getting out to help you from the car.
âI promise,â you assure him, keeping one hand over your closed eyes while offering him the other. He leads you over a parking lot and onto a path made of either gravel or crushed seashells. You suspect itâs the latter, given the smell of the Pacific salt in the air. The wind whips your hair into your face from its loose ponytail, and the path crunches under your thin sandals.
âStep,â he says, leading you up one step, then two more. You hear the jingling of keys and the turning of a doorknob, followed by a telltale squeak of a hinge. Youâre tugged gently forward once more before he drops your hand to close the door behind you. Inside, the air is cool and smells pleasantly like lemon cleaning products.
Already an improvement from the Sand Dollar.
âOkay,â he comes back to stand behind you. You feel his hands on your hips, tugging you back close against him. âYou can open them.â
You donât have to fake the little gasp you let out when you open your eyes. Joe has brought you to a cottage roughly the size of your London apartment, only much, much nicer. The living room is dominated by a stone fireplace and a white sofa that looks impossibly comfortable. Thereâs a small but efficient kitchen set with stainless steel appliances, and a door that looks as though it leads out onto a small patio with white Adirondack chairs and a fire pit, overlooking the ocean.
âThis is gorgeous,â you say softly, looking back at him over your shoulder.
He grins. âNice enough for you to stay a few nights?â
You canât help but mirror his smile. âAt least,â you say, leaning in to kiss him. You give the cottage another look before your brow furrows. âYouâre telling me the Sand Dollar came up before this place when you first searched for a hotel?â
He has the decency to look sheepish for a moment. âI mightâve been trying to take the cheap way out,â he admits. âWith the Sand Dollar.â
You let out a laugh. âAnd youâre sure Iâm worth the cost of this upgrade?â
âMore than,â he promises, turning you around so he can kiss you again.
Thatâs the beginning of one of the best weeks of your life. You and Joe fall into an easy, intimate domesticity that you couldnât have imagined was possible back in London. The one night youâd planned on staying at the cottage turns to two, then four. Days spent driving up and down the coast to explore the little beachy towns that surround your home, or swapping his rental coupe for your motherâs SUV to take your siblings to the city for a trip to the museum or back to the beach for an afternoon.
If it sounds like weâre smack-dab in the middle of another montage, thatâs because we are. But look, itâs all good stuff, I promise. The details arenât important for this part of the story. Broad strokes are doing the heavy lifting right now, and the broad strokes are showing you and Joe having the most delightfully normal week together without a care in the world.
Joe makes you breakfast every morning and cooks dinner twice at your parentsâ house, managing to impress your mother with his roasted chicken and crispy herb potatoes. You talk him into a double feature of Arsenic and Old Lace and His Girl Friday at the vintage theater in town one night. Â
And you have a lot of sex.
Like, a lot.
Unfortunately, itâs after one such interlude that the little bubble of domestic bliss pops and the montage comes to an end.
You knew it had to eventually. Come on. Weâre not at âhappily ever afterâ just yet.
Set the scene: itâs around midnight. Youâve just come back to bed and climbed under the covers, accepting the glass of water Joe has brought you from the kitchen, before he lies back down and beckons for you to join him.
You set the water down after youâve satisfied your thirst and grab your pillow to lie on your stomach with your head turned to face him. He smiles sleepily and reaches over to let his fingertips drift over the dip of your spine.
âJust realized the Venice Film Festival starts tomorrow,â he says just before youâre about to drift off.
You think about the calendar for the first time in a week and nod, amazed that youâve been able to forget these things that used to bring you so much stress. âGuess it does.â
âWe should go.â
You blink. âDo you have something screening?â
âNo,â he laughs quietly. âI donât mean to work, I just mean toââ he shrugs. âTo go.â
You swallow and shuffle to tuck your pillow under your chest. âJoe, you know if you go to Venice this weekend, itâs going to turn into work.â
âWell, yeah, but itâll still be fun,â he argues lightly. âItâs always a good time.â
âFor you,â you say before you can stop yourself.
Joe pauses and lets a pensive frown pull his lips into a slight pout. âIt could be a good time for you, too,â he says after a moment. âConsidering you wouldnât be working for a change.â
You feel a mix of flustered frustration bubble up at the back of your throat. âIâŠdonât think so.â
The weight of his stare is suddenly a little too much to handle and the longer he looks at you, the more exposed you feel. You sit up again and reach for the t-shirt heâd pulled over your head an hour ago. âOkay,â he says slowly. âAdding to the list of things that make you unique, youâre officially the only woman Iâve ever met who seems pissed off about being invited to Italy.â
âIâm not pissed off,â you say, and thatâs one of those truths that sounds like a lie because of how you said it. âIâm justâŠthinking.â
âWhat are you thinking about?â he sits up with you, looking genuinely curious. âWhy donât you want to come to Venice with me?â
âBecauseâŠâ you open your mouth once and then close it again as a million different reasons form and fade on your tongue. âBecause school starts next week.â
Itâs his turn to wrinkle his face in confusion. âAndâŠ?â
âAnd itâs stressful,â you say, avoiding his eyes. âI canât just leave my parents to deal with all that for four kidsââ
âHazel,â Joe cuts you off gently with a hand on your thigh. âYour mum and dad have done this without you with a dozen other foster children for at least ten years,â he reminds you.
âYeah, wellâŠâ you mutter lamely. âI still feel like I shouldâŠhelp.â
Thereâs a brief moment of quiet before he touches you again. âWhat did I just do to upset you?â
âNothing,â you say. Too fast to be telling the truth.
âHazel.â
âI donât want to go to Italy,â you begin slowly, willing yourself to be brave and put a name and a face to all of the traitorous thoughts youâve been shoving aside since Joe first appeared on your motherâs doorstep. âBecause I donât know what weâre doing.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean, itâs too soon for me to be asking you what we are, but I donât know that I can keep going until I know,â you blurt out. âI wish this were just some fresh, new relationship where I didnât have to be thinking these things, but we know each other too well to pretend thatâs the case, andâŠAnd even if you tell me what you think we are,â you rush on before he can speak. âI donât know what that looks like. I donât know what it means to be in your life without working for youâespecially when youâre somewhere like Venice.â
âWhy 'especially' somewhere like Venice?â His expression hasnât gained an ounce of understanding of what youâre saying, and his puzzled look is only frustrating you more.
âI mean, I still know people in the industry, Joe,â you let out a mirthless laugh. âPeople I used to work with who know I used to work for you, and honestly, how is that going to look if I start showing up at events with you rather thanââ
âDo you actually care what those people think?â
âNo,â you confess with a drop of your shoulders and a sigh. âNo, I donât. But Iâm still thinking about it, whether I care or not. Thereâs justââ You exhale again. âThereâs just a lot of stuff we havenât talked about, and I donât knowâŠâ
He waits a moment for you to continue. âYou donât know what?â
âI donât know what weâre doing,â you say again. âI know how I feel about you, but I donât know if we want the same thingsâI donât know if weâve ever wanted the same things.â
Joe is looking at you when you lift your gaze again. âOkay.â His eyes are wide and his expression open, inviting you to tell him the truth. âSo, what do you want?â
âThis,â you say with another dry laugh. âThis normal, unimpressive life youâve been seeing and living with me the last couple of days? Thatâs what I want.â You shrug. âThatâs it. I want a house and a dinner table with a couple of kids who donât look like meâmaybe someday one or two who doââ you add, because why not? He wants you to be honest. âI just want something simple. And normal. And a Bernese Mountain Dog,â you tack on to the end of your list. Because you do. Youâve always wanted a Bernese Mountain Dog, and if youâre out here already making a listâŠ
You force yourself to take a breath. âWhat do you want?â
âI just want you,â he says, so fast you donât believe heâs even considered the question.
Your shoulders drop again. âThatâs not enough of an answer, Joe.â
âNo, it is,â he says firmly. âFor me it is.â His throat moves as he swallows. âLook, all the things I thought I wanted out of my life? I got them. I had them. And theyââ he swallows again. âNone of what I thought was important means anything without you around. Okay?
âIâm in love with you, Hazel. And donât tell me that Iâm not,â he plows ahead, seemingly unaware that his words have sucked all the oxygen out of the room. âOr that Iâm rushing into something or that Iâm confused. Because when it comes to you, Iâve never been confused about how I feel. Iâve been irritated and angry and terrified about how I feel, but Iâve never been confused.â
Your mouth gapes open with a squeak of uncertainty. âJoe, Iââ
âItâs okay if you donât love me back yet,â he goes on quickly. âHonest, it is. I know I have a long way to go to get you to see that Iâm serious. That IâmâŠâ he moves his shoulder again. âI donât knowâŠthat Iâm someone you could consider doing aâŠsimple, normal, unimpressive life with. But thatâs fine.â The edge of his lips lifts into a small, hopeful smile that squeezes your heart and brings a lump to your throat. âI can wait.â
And you want to tell him that he doesnât have to wait. You want to tell him then that youâre in love with him, too. That youâve been in love with him for so much longer than you ever wanted to admit. But it feels like too much for that moment.
In that moment, it feels like itâs enough to put your arms around him and let him bury his face in your neck and your hair. It feels like itâs enough to let him lay you back down and cover your face with soft, playful kisses that chase away the tears still stinging your eyes.
It feels like itâs enough.
Because it is.

Weâre going to celebrate your thirty-fifth birthday with another montage, babe. Donât fight it. Weâre wrapping things up, here.
We can just blend a few key moments to show our folks at home that Joe decides not to attend the Venice Film Festival. Instead, he spends the weekend meeting the hoard of cousins and aunties that drive up from San Francisco to attend the party your mother throws for you in the backyard.
Shots of introductory handshakes being pushed aside in favor of hugs overlayed with clips of everyone scattered around the house and yard eating off paper plates in their laps with smiles and conversation for days.
Let that fade into the glow of birthday candles and the sweet taste of buttercream frosting as the sun sets and the house finally goes quiet.
Joe is still sitting outside by the fire pit when you go back in to grab a sweatshirt and find your mother sitting at the kitchen table. âOh,â you stop short. âThought you went to bed already.â
âIâm heading there,â she says, stirring honey into her tea. âJust needed a nightcap.â
You find your sweatshirt hanging by the door and pull it over your head, surprised to find her gaze directed at the man sitting outside. You wait for a moment, trying to read her expression. When you canât, you clear your throat. âEverything okay, Mama?â
She looks back at you with a smile. âEverythingâs great, baby,â she says quietly before she flicks her eyes back to the deck for a moment. âYâknow, heâs not as bad as you said he was.â
You canât help the snort you let out at her baiting. âNo, he was exactly as bad as I said he was,â you assure her, even though she knows this. âHe just got better.â
âWell,â she rolls her shoulder in an easy shrug. âIf he stays on this side of âbetterâ, Iâve got no objections.â
You wait another moment, brow lifted in anticipation. âReally?â you ask. âNone?â
âWell, I say thatâŠâ she shuffles in her chair while you grin. âI guess I do wish he was Black.â
You donât bother trying to stifle your laughter that time. âYeah, well, nobodyâs perfect.â
âIâm serious,â sheâs laughing now, too. âAll the beautiful Black men in this world, and you manage to come home with the whitest white boy Iâve ever seen in my life.â
âOh, thatâs rich coming from you,â you counter, shaking your head.
She looks shocked. âI beg your entire pardon, young lady?â
You give her a look. âAlright, physically, no, but come on. Spiritually? We both know that if Tim Walz had a Black twin, it would be Peter.â
She snorts her laugh into her next sip of tea and splashes it all over her face. âHow long you been sitting on that one?â
You beam and hand her a dish towel to clean up her mess. âSince Kamala announced him as her running mate in 2024 and I looked him up on Instagram.â
Your mother is still laughing while she gets to her feet. âIâm going to tell him you said that,â she warns.
âPlease do,â you encourage.
âHeâll probably take it as a compliment,â she considers, shaking her head. âThe nerd.â
She stops and sets her tea down in favor of wrapping her arms around you from the side and squeezing your shoulders tightly, her cheek resting against your forehead. âGoodnight, Mom,â you say quietly, closing your eyes and breathing her in for a second. âI love you.â
âI love you too,â she promises with a kiss on your cheek. âHappy birthday, baby.â
Joe has rearranged the chairs, so his feet are propped up on one while he lounges in the other when you return to the deck. âIs this seat taken?â you ask, amused, while you knock your ankle against his footrest.
âIt is, Iâm afraid,â he says with an exaggerated wince. âGuess weâll have to share.â
Before you can protestâand not that you were going toâhe leans forward and pulls you into his arms, depositing you onto his lap with an inelegant oof. âThis seatâs more comfortable anyway,â you decide, wrapping your arms loosely around his shoulders.
He smiles at you for a moment before a little line appears between his eyebrows. âWait, hang on, you have to get up.â
âWhat?â you sputter around a laugh.
âNo, hang on,â he helps you to stand back up before he reaches into his pocket. âI have something for you.â
âOh, you do?â Your stomach does a little inconvenient acrobatic routine that settles when he extracts a square jewelry box thatâs too large to be something insanely premature.
âI do,â he says with a smile and presents it to you. âHappy birthday, darling.â
âYouâve given me a lot of really good things over the last few days,â you remind him, taking it cautiously from his hand, and let him pull you back onto his lap. âYou didnât have to get me a birthday gift.â
âI know I didnât have to,â he says easily. âBut youâve been buying your own gifts for as long as youâve known me, so I thought Iâd try my hand at it for a change.â
You raise your eyebrows, biting back a grin. âAnd?â
âItâs quite fun,â he replies. âMight have to get used to it.â
âIâm sure your new assistant will be pleased to hear that,â you say with a giggle as you remove the velvet ribbon and pull the lid free from the top of the box. Your breath catches in your chest for just a moment as you look down at a delicate tennis bracelet made of black diamonds. âJoeâŠâ you say softly and look over at him. âThank you. This is beautiful.â
âNot the one youâd picked out before, by any chance, is it?â
You swallow and consider lying and saying it was. Letting him think he somehow managed to read your mind and choose the exact piece of jewelry you almost bought yourself last Christmas to match your obsidian pendant. But you donât.
Youâve lied to him enough for one lifetime.
Instead, you shake your head with a smile. âNo,â you tell him. âBut itâs the one you picked out,â you lean in and bump the tip of your nose against his. âSo, I love it.â
Joe is still smiling when he closes the gap between you and presses his lips to yours in a soft kiss. âYou sure?â he asks when you pull away.
You nod. âVery sure,â you promise and sit back with enough space so he can clasp it around your wrist. Â Itâs not the one you would have chosen for yourself, but itâs beautiful, and looking at it sparkling against your skin makes you feel a little like a princess. âItâs perfect,â you assure him when you look up again.
His smile widens as he sets the box on the ground and gathers you close again. âThis incredibly brilliant woman I know told me that only the classiest of dames are still wearing tennis bracelets,â he says quietly. âSo, I figured it was a safe choice.â
You bite back another smile. âShe sounds really smart,â you admit.
âShe is,â he agrees. âBeautiful, too.â
âUh-oh,â you shake your head. âDangerous combination.â
âDeadly, really,â he agrees before he sobers again. âSheâsâuhâsheâs the best thing that ever happened to me.â
You swallow hard. âThat right?â
âAnd since it took me an exceptionally long time to realize that,â he goes on while you loop your arms around his neck again. âIâm going to do whatever it takes to make sure she knows I know exactly how lucky I am to have her.â He leans in for a brief, gentle kiss. âIncluding,â he says, pulling away just enough to keep his forehead pinned to yours, âsaying yes to a Bernese Mountain Dog if thatâs really what she wants. Whichââ heâs interrupted for a moment by the cascade of giggles you canât control. âHonestly, Hazel, could you have picked a larger animal?â
âBut theyâre so cute!â you exclaim. âI love them! And we donât have to get one right nowâŠâ
âOh, thatâs good,â he laughs. â'Cause Iâve no idea where weâd put it.â
âLet me just enjoy one gift at a time,â you suggest, turning slightly so you can tuck your head under his chin and let your gaze land on the last streaks of magenta and orange of the sunset.
âAlright,â he says, and tips his chin to kiss the top of your head. âOne gift at a time.â
And faaaaaade to black.
---
A/N: Seriously, if you've made it thus far, you're getting a kiss on the mouth. And if, in the actual calendar year it's been since I updated this fic, you've forgotten their talk about the tennis bracelet, that is A-OK, you'll just want to go over and re-read the middle of chapter 4 for reference.

GO HAZEL, GO HAZEL. GET THOSE ORGASMS.
âItâs one of those low-level miracles.â Thatâs not low level, btw. Iâve been there. In the trenches. IN THE SAND. Thatâs mid level AT LEAST.
Peter being spiritually white is the most adorable thing, Timâs brother?! đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
Really gonna need Hazel to enjoy some more montage sex. For science of course.
And babe, Iâm with you til the end of the line here. Youâre suck simping over hot talented Hollywood men with semi pretentious tastes in film FOR LIFE. Also missing Joeâs curls hours.
Truly enjoyed the ride (not as much as Hazel did though). đ„
(The showing Jamie in the make up scene made me swoon)

Chapter 2 - Mister Hundred and One
âLinds, could you please stop eating all the dough?â You demand the next morning, watching as your sister pinches another glob of oatmeal raisin cookie dough out of the bowl and drops it into her mouth.
âYouâre going to get sick,â Andi warns, her face hidden behind the pantry door while she digs for the orange extract.
âFuck sick,â you roll your eyes. âWeâre not going to have any left to bake.â
âMighty, watch your mouth.â Your mother appears in the kitchen as if summoned by the utterance of any four-letter word falling from her daughterâs mouth.
âWell, itâs true,â you say with a sigh.
âLindsay, enough with the dough,â she points at her youngest child with a look over the tops of her glasses. âAnd must you sit on the counter like an animal?â She grabs a wooden spatula from the utensil crock and pokes Lindseyâs behind until she hops down from where sheâd been sitting on the counter, swinging her feet back and forth, watching you and Andi do all the work. âWe have guests.â
It's Lindsayâs turn to roll her eyes. âMom, we donât have guests,â she says, perfectly mimicking your motherâs tone. âWe have Joe. Thereâs no possible way he expects anything nice after living with Mighty for a whole year.â
Your brow furrows. âWhat is that supposed to mean?â
âIt means that youâre a mess, sis,â she shrugs as her faded ACDC t-shirt thatâs three sizes too big slips off her shoulder. âAnyway, heâs not even awake yet, so I donât know why weâreââ
âSorry,â Joeâs voice precedes his appearance in the doorway. He looks adorably sleepy, still squinting behind his glasses as he surveys the busy kitchen. âDonât mean to interrupt,â he says, offering a smile that looks more than a little intimidated.
âYouâre not interrupting,â you assure him, crossing to greet him with a quick good morning kiss. âThereâs coffee if you need it.â
âThank you,â he says quietly, following your point to the far side of the kitchen where the coffee maker is chugging through its second pot of the morning.
âDid you sleep alright?â Mom asks kindly once heâs poured a cup for himself and taken a seat at the breakfast nook. âOh, honey, we have cream and sugar for that,â she looks distressed the moment before she starts moving toward the refrigerator.
âOh, no, please donât trouble yourself,â he holds up a hand. âBlack is fine.â
Lindsey doesnât bother to hide her gag. âWhat are you, a coal miner?â she asks. âHow can you drink it black?â
âGot into a habit for work,â he shrugs. âItâs not that bad.â
You watch, biting back a smile as he puts the cup to his lips and takes a sip. No one else notices the brief spasm of his mouth and neck before he sets the cup back on the table. Black coffee is just fine when itâs the stupidly expensive stuff he brews in the French press at home.
Eight-o-Clock Coffee from the middle shelf of Kroger probably packs a little more of a punch.
You get out the Sugar Cookie flavored creamer from the door of the refrigerator and set it down next to his cup. âItâs Christmas, baby,â you say with a smile. âYou can indulge just a little.â
Thank you, he mouths after heâs stirred enough of the cream into his cup to make it somewhat palatable.
âDoes anyone want any real food for breakfast?â Your mother asks, looking around the room at the mess you and your sisters have made. âOr should I just give up and accept that youâre all going to eat cookies all morning?â
âYes, that,â Andi says with a definitive nod before she rips off a sheet of parchment paper for the first cookie sheet on the pile by the sink. âDo that.â
âAnd weâre not going to eat them all morning,â you correct, jumping back into the flow of things to assist your sister in spooning peanut butter blossom dough out to be baked.
âWe have to at least have enough for tonight,â Andi puts in.
âWhatâs happening tonight?â Joe asks politely.
âThat quiet dinner at home you were promised,â you tell him with a quick smile.
âYep,â Lindsay hops up onto the counter again and starts ticking things off on her fingers. âDinner, cookies, Christmas moviesââ she stops. âMom, is it still okay if Cameron comes over?â
âWho is Cameron?â you ask before she can get an answer.
âLindsayâs new boyfriennnnnnd,â Andi says in a teasing voice.
âOoooooooh,â you sing back. âI didnât hear about him.â
âThatâs because thereâs nothing to hear,â Lindsay says with a scoff. âWeâve only been out on like, three dates. I donât even know if I like him yet.â
âOh, yes you do,â your mother scolds, slapping her knee as she walks past, apparently having given up on getting her to sit at the table like a human. âWe all like him,â she adds while she pours herself a cup of coffee. âHe built just the best feeding station for the kids over the summerâmakes the bottle feeding so much easier for your father.â
âAnd he did all the social media stuff for goat yoga this summer,â Andi chimes in. âAlmost doubled our numbers.â
âAnd heâs quiiiite a muffin,â Mom continues while you catch Joe trying unsuccessfully to hide his smile in his coffee cup.
âMom, seriously?â
âBlueberry,â Andi laughs. âWith that crunchy-munchy stuff on top.â
âAll of you! Enough!â
âWell,â you glance up from dropping the last of the first dozen cookies onto the sheet. âIâm sold. I cannot wait to meet your blueberry stud muffin, little sister. Whenâs the wedding?â
âOhhhkay you can shut up,â Lindsay grumbles. âSwear to God no one in this house matured past seventh grade.â
âOh boy, she must really like him.â You canât help but needle her just a little more. âLook how red her face is!â
She jumps off the counter, clearly fighting the blush thatâs staining her fair cheeks. âI hate you all!â she declares, swiping another tablespoonâs worth of unbaked oatmeal raisin as she starts to leave the room. After a moment, she pops back in and points to where Joe is still sitting at the table. âExcept you,â she says, her mouth full of cookie dough. âYouâre okay.â
âLikewise,â he says, lifting his mug in a little salute.
âWe really shouldnât tease her like that,â your mother says with an affectionate sigh once Linds has gone back upstairs.
âMom,â Andi levels her gaze. âYou made me take her with me on just about every date I went on in high school and college,â she reminds her. âI will tease her as much as I darn well please, thank you very much.â
âSamesies,â you agree, offering a big smile.
This is met with another heavy sigh. âI donât know what your plans are, but someone needs to help your father with getting everyone ready for tomorrow before you do anything else.â
âTomorrow?â Joe glances toward the calendar. âIs that theâŠgoats in sweaters thing?â
âIt is,â you answer with a nod. âAnd please do not feel like you have to go.â
âWhat?â Andi looks appalled at the suggestion. âNo, he definitely has to go!â
âIf he doesnât want toââ Your mother attempts to intervene.
âMighty cannot just bring her man home and then let him off the hook for goat photos.â
âAndi, believe it or not, some people donât think an afternoon spent wrangling farm animals into sweaters to be a super fun and relaxing activity,â you remind her with a look before you shift your eyes back over to Joe. âBut youâre totally going, arenât you?â
His grin widens, deepening those criminally adorable dimples. âOh, Iâm not missing this.â
âSee?â Andi shrugs and looks triumphant. âHeâs not missing it.â
âOoohkay,â you say as you start slinging more cookie dough onto another tray.
âSo why does your family call you Mighty, anyway?â Joe asks later on when youâre making your way back to the car, just as the sun is beginning to set. You pop the trunk and set the two bags of last-minute gifts inside while he holds your cup of chai.Â
You take your drink back and unlock the rest of the doors. âYou havenât met my cousin, Hayden, yet.â
âNot yet,â he agrees. You watch his eyes dart up and to the right as he tries to remember all the people heâd met at Aunt Barbieâs the night before. âRight? I havenât?â
âNo,â you shake your head as you climb behind the wheel. âNot yet. Anyway, she and I were born a week apart,â you start the car and wait a moment for the heat to kick on. âBut she was two months early and was so so tiny, so next to her I looked like this monster steroid babyââ Joe interrupts you with a laugh. âI wasnât,â you add. âI was normal-sized. Eight pounds or something. Anyway, one of my uncles said that by comparison, because I was small but beefy, I looked like Mighty Mouse. So, everyone started calling Hayden âMinnie Mouseâ and me âMighty Mouseâ and now sheâs a grown woman named Minnie, and I canât get anyone to stop calling me Mighty no matter how I try.â
When you look over from clearing the dusting of snow with the windshield wipers, Joe is still smiling. âWell, thatâs adorable.â
âMmm,â you hum with a look before you pull out of the parking lot. âThis is a Wisconsin-only nickname, though, alright?â
He laughs quietly and nods. âYes, love.â He adjusts the vents on his side before he looks around. âHave you got any other hot spots to show me?â
âOh, you mean this fabulous shopping plaza with a TJ Maxx, and a Michaels, and a Little Caesars isnât thrilling enough for you?â
âDonât forget the nail salon.â
âOh my God, thank you for reminding me.â
âAssuming this is where you spent a lot of your time, growing up?â
âOh no,â you shake your head, turning back onto the road. âThis wasnât built until I was in college. Thereâs actuallyâŠâ you stop and look over at him as an idea occurs to you.
âWhat?â
âWell, I already drove you past my high school and the three other places that had any significance to meââ
âIt was a rousing eleven minutes,â he quips.
âSo, thereâs really only one other place I can think of that I havenât shown you.â
âAnd whatâs that?â
You glance over with another grin. âThe make-out spot.â
The dirt access road that ran through the back forty of Olsenâs farm was covered in snow, but it had at least been tamped down by heavy tractor tires since the last real snowfall. It was plenty safe enough to drive on. The rest was exactly as remote and secluded as you remembered.
âAre we allowed to be here?â Joe asks, looking around nervously as you slow down to roll over the bumpy ground without breaking an axle.
âUm, I mean, probably not?â You guessed, having to squint a bit in the dim light. âBut no one ever comes out hereâespecially after dark.â You smile at him. âDonât worryâwe wonât get caught.â
âIâm not worried,â he says. âThough Iâm notâŠentirely sure what youâre planning on us doing out here.â
âReally?â You laugh as you slow to a stop. âYou canât think of a single thing I might want to do out here. With you. In the middle of nowhere when I havenât had you to myself in almost three weeks?â
He lets out a shocked laugh as you put the car in park and turn off the headlights. âWaitââ he watches as you unbuckle your seat belt. âAre you serious?â
âCome kiss me and find out,â you suggest.
Joe is shaking his head, even as he clips out of his seatbelt and pushes the center armrest up so you can slide over to his side. âThis is a good car for this,â he comments, noting the lack of a center console for the first time.
âI know.â You canât help but giggle when he pulls you into his lap and reaches to the side to move the seat back. âThereâs a reason I didnât take the truck.â
âVery smart,â he murmurs the moment before your lips meet his. Itâs like someone touches your skin with a live wire, an instant spark that warms you all the way down to your toes. You feel his hands slip around your waist inside your open coat, tugging you as close as you can get. His tongue slips easily into your mouth the moment your lips part and that rush of warmth settles low in your belly when your fingers lace at the back of his neck. âIâve missed you,â he presses the words into your skin between the kisses he trails over your cheek and down to your neck.
âMissed you too.â You let your eyes close for a moment, enjoying the way he scrapes his teeth lightly over your pulse before you shift to slide away, putting enough space between you so you can reach to unbuckle his pants. You swat his hands away when he goes to do the same, and you have to bite back a smile when you hear him whine into the crook of your neck. âJust sit back,â you instruct him, giving him a gentle push.
It's a bit of a squeeze to fit between his knees and the dashboard, but you manage and canât help but relish that look of disbelief on Joeâs face while heâs helping you to shove his pants down enough to free his cock. âYou really donât have toââ Any gentlemanly protest heâs about to make dies with a quiet moan when you wet your lips and wrap them around his foreskin, teasing the tip with your tongue.
You take a second to pull off your gloves so you can lick your palm before you move your hand slowly up and down his length while you focus on all those sounds heâs making as you work your lips and tongue around the head. You take him deeper with each slow dip of your head and flatten your tongue along the underside, ensuring everything is as wet as possible before you hollow your cheeks, sucking lightly.
Joeâs hand goes to your head, his fingers dragging against your scalp before he grabs hold of your ponytail and keeps you moving in the rhythm he helps you set. He groans louder, a sound you can hear him trying to muffle through a clenched jaw when you seal your hand to your lips and move them both together, sucking his cock in earnest.
You can feel a slight tremor in his thighs as you keep going, not planning to stop until he comes. But thereâs something about the way he says your name that gives you pause. Onceâthen again, a little more panicked. Before you can try to figure out whatâs wrong, he pulls your hair, hard, and puts a hand under your chin, pulling you off him abruptly. âStopstopstopââ he babbles with an edge to his voice.
âWhat? Whatâsâoh fuck.â Your eyes widen when you realize why heâs panicked. The car is awash in flashing red and blue lights.
âNo one ever comes out here?â he repeats as you both scramble to get out of this compromising position. He only just manages to get his pants back on, but thereâs no time to get yourself back to the driverâs side before thereâs a knock on the passenger side window.
âFuck my life,â you breathe out as you reach over, still stuck in Joeâs lap, and click the button to roll down the window.
At the very least, the police officer doesnât shine a flashlight directly into your eyes. And because of that, you can see exactly who it is whoâs just busted you. âOfficer Steve Patterson,â You give a valiant attempt at a casual smile and tone, despite still wiping the corners of your mouth and doing your best to shield Joeâs face with your upper body. âHow the hell are ya?â
âHey Mighty,â The officer whoâd busted you at least three times during your junior and senior years of high school sounds amused. âI heard you were home for Christmas.â
âUh-huh. Just uhââ you cough. âDoing some sightseeing.â
He glances around the space surrounding the car. âYou forget youâre not allowed to be out here?â
A million possible responses come to mind but for some reason, the only one that comes out when you open your mouth is, âWeâre not?â
Officer Steve lets out a little laugh as he shakes his head. âDidnât see the signs?â he asks and then shines his flashlight on the nearest treesâall posted with big No Trespassing signs.
âOh, those signs,â You feel Joeâs fingers dig into your hips, a clear request to get on with it if youâve ever heard one. âI, uh, I thought that was for the other side. Of theâuhâthe trees. Or the fence. Whatever.â
He raises his thick eyebrows. âThe other side?â he repeats.
âYeah,â Now that youâve started this playing dumb routine, itâs surprisingly difficult to stop. âI thought it was like, a reassurance? Like âHey, donât worry, the people on the other side of this sign wonât be trespassing on your side over here.ââ
âIs that right?â Steve asks. âThatâsâŠthatâs the best you can do?â
You swallow hard. âYyyyyup.â
Steve shakes his head with a quiet chuckle. âHowâs about you and your boyfriend get out of here and weâll call this a warning?â
âI love that idea.â
The officer bends to peer closer into the car. âSound good to you, sir?â
Joe raises a hand with his thumb up. âFantastic!â He says, and the word is muffled against your coat.
âAlright then.â Steve straightens up. âTell your dad I said, âMerry Christmasâ, Mighty.â
âI sure will,â you say back, way too cheerfully.
Itâs some small Christmas miracle that he doesnât wait for you to go first so he can follow you out. You wait until his flashing lights have turned the corner before you deflate with a heavy sigh. âJoe, I am so sorry,â you say, lifting your head from the headrest, unsure of what to expect in his expression.
âI thought it was for the other side,â he repeats, managing to keep a straight face for all of three seconds before he bursts out laughing.
âI was flustered!â you exclaim as your face heats up. âShut up,â you whine as you smack his arm. âYou better not tell anyone about this.â
âOh my God,â he laughs harder. âYeah, Iâm going to get right on with Vic about this and make sure she sets a press release for the morning.â
It takes a minute to clumsily untangle yourself from his lap and get situated behind the wheel again. âAlright, well, that was the make-out spot,â you say as you flip the headlights back on and fasten your seatbelt again. âAnd this concludes our tour!â
The fire is starting to fade just a minute before your dad pokes it back to life with the blackened iron spear. âAlright,â he says as he moves to pick up his phone from his armchair. âAre you girls done with movies tonight? I think you got all the classics.â
Despite the earlier run-in with the law, the rest of the night had turned out to be surprisingly relaxed and low-key. After dinner, you and your sisters had piled up plates of cookies and sprawled around the living room. You and Joe on one side of the couch, your mom on the other. Dad in his armchair, Andi and Reed on the loveseat, and Lindsey and not-her-boyfriend-but-totally-her-boyfriend Cameron sitting on the floor in front of them while Lindsey absently strums and tunes her beat-up acoustic guitar. Â
âIâd say How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Charlie Brown, and Love Actually make for a pretty substantial start to the mandatory Christmas movie viewing,â Reed says, glancing at his watch. He gives Andi a tap on the thigh. âWe should probably go soonâcanât leave the dog too much longer.â
âAnd since we canât watch any of the stop motion classicsââ
âWait,â Joe interrupts you. âWhy is that?â
âMighty, shut upâŠâ Lindsey groans.
âBecause someone has been afraid of them since she was a baby,â Andi leans forward and tickles Lindseyâs neck.
âNot really,â Cameron looks over at her, a smile tugging on his lips. Your mom was rightâheâs a total muffin. âRight?â
âJustââ she squirms away from Andi and covers her face. âI donât know. The eyes and the way they moveââ
âLeave your sister alone,â your mother says sleepily as she stands up. âWhatever you want to do next, itâll have to be without me. I canât keep my eyes open.â
âRight behind ya,â your dad says and points first at you and then at Andi. âYou two be nice.â
You roll your eyes. âWeâre always nice.â
Your parents head upstairs amid a call and response of âGood nightâ and âDonât stay up too lateâ. You yawn loudly once theyâve gone and burrow a little tighter against Joeâs chest. âIâm pretty tired, too,â you admit as you feel him tip his chin to kiss the top of your head. âIâd be okay with calling it a night.â
âWait, no!â Linds holds up one hand. âJust one more thing.â
Andi sighs. âWhat?â
âSince youâve been making fun of me all day,â she says with a dramatic pause before she presses her fingers to the neck of her guitar and gives it an experimental strum.
âNo,â Youâre already shaking your head as you sit up. âNot happening.â
âWhatâs not happening?â Joe asks, looking a cross between amused and concerned.
âNo, itâs happening,â Lindsey insists, plucking the strings in a familiar melody. âPleeeease?â
Andi tosses her head back with a dramatic groan. âAre you kidding me?â
âNope!â
âWhat is happening?â Cameron asks, shooting a look around the room.
âLindseyâs going to make them sing the Snow Miser song from A Year Without Santa Claus,â Reed says helpfully.
âI thought you just said those movies scared you,â Cameron remarks, looking more confused.
âJust the visualsânot the songs. And Iâm totally making you sing that one right now.â
âYou absolutely are not,â you assure them all firmly. âItâs late and we all want to go to bed.â
But your baby sister is already pouting her lips and widening her eyes like a puppy dog. âPweeeease?â she begs in a pathetic tone. âJust once?â
âOh my God,â Andi rolls her eyes. âWell, Iâm not singing by myself,â she says. âI only know the Snow Miser part.â
âI didnât get to hear it last year,â Lindsey continues with her pouty little whine. âSince somebody had to go move to London and everything.â
Joe gives you a playful poke in the ribs. âCome on,â he cajoles lightly. âI want to hear you sing.â
You give him a look. âYouâre supposed to be on my side.â
He gives you one back. âYou do sort of owe me for this afternoon.â
âWhat happened this afternoon?â Andi asks, her ears perking up like a German Shepherd.
âFine,â you throw up your hands to avoid answering. âOne verse each and then Iâm going to bed.â
âYay!â Lindsey claps her hands like a little kid and goes back to her guitar. âAndi, you start.â
Your older sister shoots you a look of exasperated solidarity and clears her throat to start the song the two of you used to have to sing to Lindsay at least ten times a holiday season when you were kids.
I'm Mister White Christmas, I'm Mister Snow. I'm Mister Icicle; I'm Mister Ten below. Friends call me Snow Miser, whatever I touch, Turns to snow in my clutch. I'm too much.
And if youâre being honest, itâs much more fun to sing when Lindsey is playing guitar rather than making you sing along to the grainy soundtrack from the 80s. You always forget how good she is.
I never want to know a day that's over 40 degrees, I'd rather have it 30, 20, 10, 5 and let it freeze!
You take a drink from what remains of Joeâs hot toddy as Andi finishes her verse.
Friends call me Snow Miser, whatever I touch, Turns to snow in my clutch. And you have to join in on the last line with the rest of the room.
Iâm too much.
âYour turn, Heat Miser,â Lindsey grins from across the room while she strums the few notes between verses, and you take a breath to start singing.
I'm Mister Green Christmas, I'm Mister Sun.
You can see Joeâs smile grow from the corner of your eye and you have to try to smother your own smile while you keep going.
Iâm Mister Heeeeeat Blister You drag the word out so Andi can do her usual whistle that only makes you want to laugh harder even while youâre rolling your eyes.
Iâm Mister Hundred and One They call me Heat Miser whatever I touch Starts to melt in my clutch.
You look over and canât help but reach out and grab hold of Joeâs chin, giving his face a little shake.
I'm too much.
You make it through the rest of your verses before Lindsey declares your debts paid and puts her guitar away to walk those who are heading out to the door.
âIâm going to bed,â you say and go to stand up, but Joe pulls you back down. âWhat?â you giggle when he locks his arms around your waist and refuses to let you move.
âNothing,â he says, shaking his head before he presses a soft, sweet kiss to your lips. âIâm just glad Iâm here.â
You feel your smile widen as you tap your nose against his. âMe too.â
