Hello, Submas Tumblr! I’ve made a new blog- specifically for Submas Fluff! No angst allowed. I decided who else to make the first post but the man who has overwhelming amounts of angst drawn and written for him, himself? Here, have a lil’ balding Ingo.

If you are curious, this blog is run by @thatradfailure, who got tired of people venting in a server that they had no where to go on here to get away from the angst. So I decided to make them a place to go instead.

OP is absolutely right, and many of us have been trying to say this for almost a year now.

As an autistic person who is just like the two of them, I found healing and self-acceptance through them in ways I hadn’t before. It was wonderful to be given permission to be myself and just exist and be happy. But the turn the fandom has taken post-PLA has returned to that ableism that was there in the heyday of BW and B2W2, and it’s extremely alienating and harmful.

I haven’t been in the Submas tag on this website in a year. I can’t go in for my own safety and mental health, because I know I’m going to see myself being dehumanized and treated as something scary, and that’s so antithetical to who Ingo and Emmet actually are. So frequently in the tags I see characters I don’t recognize - on the surface, they look like Ingo and Emmet, but the way they act and the things they say and do are not them. They’re uncomfortable ableist stereotypes that aren’t even rooted in canon at all, and whilst fandom is a place to have fun and play around with canon stuff in your own way, it’s important to think about the impact your work might have on other people.

When PLA dropped, I wrote the Submas primer you might have used. I also wrote a post explaining how they can both be read as autistic. I wanted to help, to welcome new people in with open arms, and…well, now I feel driven out of a space that had once been safe for me. It isn’t safe anymore. I can’t post my art or any of my thoughts because I know what will happen, and I don’t want to interact with the people whose content has actively harmed me (my self-esteem and mental health have not been doing well this past year).

Please, please listen to OP. They’re dead-on, and it’s alienating to experience a fandom this way.

Literally the whole reason this blog exists is this post and this reblog right here. Like, this stuff is such a huge problem, that unless you’re already aware, you are going to get dragged into being ableist without realizing. I know I did for a bit, and got lucky enough that I was dragged out by friends.

Nothing exists in a vacuum and I think that’s the hardest thing for other people to realize. Yes, your creative content CAN cause harm to someone. That is nothing new. Creative content was used as propaganda for years back in the day in order to paint certain types of people as dangerous, which WOULD impact wider society, actually. It’s nothing new.

The Submas Autistic Joy event has officially begun! And Day One is the prompts Journey and/or Beginnings. I decided to combine the two- the journey that began the twins’ love for battling.

For those of you who see this, and are curious, the Submas Autistic Joy event is a weeklong event, lasting July 24th, 2020, to July 30th, 2020. It’s all about counteracting the rampent angst and ableism currently in the Submas Tumblr fandom by creating lighthearted, fluffy, and sometimes silly pieces of art, centered around the Subway Bosses Ingo and Emmet, and sometimes their autistic traits.
