I guess the worst thing about the kid new atheists is that they see science as a varied and complex discourse they don’t need to study. Authority is pre-established. They don’t actually study the history and philosophy of science that is misrepresented by gross patriarchal capitalists while narrowly personifying religion as either a white protestant fundamentalist yelling about creationism or a children and women killing “Islamist” with a machine gun. They are crass western civ culture warriors.

Many people with severe anxiety and/or depression are also anti-authoritarians. Often a major pain of their lives that fuels their anxiety and/or depression is fear that their contempt for illegitimate authorities will cause them to be financially and socially marginalized; but they fear that compliance with such illegitimate authorities will cause them existential death.

I don’t want queer and trans folks serving openly in the military. I don’t want women subjected to the draft. I don’t want women receiving equally harsh prison sentences to men. These things may fit some minimal definition of “equality” but they’re not liberation and they’re not progress.

I want the dissolution of standing armies and an end to the economic hardships that force many to pursue military careers who wouldn’t if they had better options. I want an end to the nationalistic jingoism that promotes military ‘service’ as some high moral calling. I want an end to the aggressive imperialism that costs millions of innocent lives in the name of economic priorities. I want the abolition of the prison system and punitive legal systems.

I don’t want folks equally subjected to these harmful systems, I want the systems torn down so no one is subjected to them.

ABOLISH THE POLICE

When I say, “abolish the police,” I’m usually asked what I would have us replace them with. My answer is always full social, economic, and political equality, but that’s not what’s actually being asked. What people mean is “who is going to protect us?” Who protects us now? If you’re white and well-off, perhaps the police protect you. The rest of us, not so much. What use do I have for an institution that routinely kills people who look like me, and make it so I’m afraid to walk out of my home?

My honest answer is that I don’t know what a world without police looks like. I only know there will be less dead black people. I know that a world without police is a world with one less institution dedicated to the maintenance of white supremacy and inequality. 

The police are not performing the function we say they are, and there are real ways to achieve a world with less violence that don’t include the police. We simply haven’t tried. Until we invest in full employment, universal healthcare that includes mental health services, free education at every level, comprehensive sex education that teaches about consent and bodily autonomy, the decriminalization of drugs and erasure of the stigma around drug use, affordable and adequate housing, eliminating homophobia and transphobia—things that actually reduce the amount of violence we witness—I don’t want to hear about how necessary the police are. They are only necessary because we are all too willing to hide behind our cowardice and not actually put forth the effort to create a better world. - MYCHAL DENZEL SMITH

The breadth of European colonization.

This is a map of the countries Europe colonized, controlled, or influenced between 1500 and 1960. The purple is Europe. The orange countries are ones never under European rule. Almost the entire rest of the map — all the green, blue, and yellow — were dominated by Europe to some extent. “Influenced” is pretty much a euphemism and often not all that different than outright domination.

Max Fisher, writing at Vox, summarizes:

There are only four countries that escaped European colonialism completely. Japan and Korea successfully staved off European domination, in part due to their strength and diplomacy, their isolationist policies, and perhaps their distance. Thailand was spared when the British and French Empires decided to let it remained independent as a buffer between British-controlled Burma and French Indochina…

Then there is Liberia, which European powers spared because the United States backed the Liberian state, which was established in the early 1800s by freed American slaves who had decided to move to Africa.

can you explain why liberalism is a poor ideology?

Sure. Liberalism is like the partner who tells you over and over that they want a committed relationship, yet when the time comes to actually do something — anything — that actually builds toward it they get cold feet but still wanna fuck you. When it comes to fighting institutional oppression, liberals love to sweet-talk marginalized and disenfranchised peoples but never want to commit to dismantling the overarching systems which uphold oppression They instead opt for reforms which are built never to challenge status quo power in any radical sense. If they did challenge it, this inevitably would mean challenging their own position of power — and that’s not acceptable. This is why liberals can talk about “freedom” while supporting the bombing of people all over the Middle East, Africa, etc. It’s why they can say words like “progress” about a legal system which murders black and brown people and incarcerates us at breakneck speed. It’s why they can support “development” of poor areas while fanning the flames of police terror and gentrification.

To paraphrase Malcolm X on liberals, though he referred specifically only to white liberals: Liberals differ from conservatives only in one way: the liberal is more deceitful than the conservative. The liberal is more hypocritical than the conservative. Both want power, but the liberal is the one who has perfected the art of posing as the working class’ friend and benefactor; and by winning the friendship, allegiance, and support of the poor, the liberal is able to use them as a pawn or tool in this political “football game” that is constantly raging between the liberals and conservatives.

Why Our Smartest Students Don’t Become Teachers

In a 2010 report, researchers from McKinsey & Company examined this question and proposed mimicking not only teaching standards of tops countries, but also the “value proposition” of teaching in order to court skilled students. As opposed to the “top third+” strategy used in countries with stellar education, in the U.S., the report notes that only “23% of new teachers come from the top third [academic cohort], and just 14% in high poverty schools, which find it especially difficult to attract and retain talented teachers.”
