people are still being really annoying and not understanding this at all so Iâm gonna have to clarify further: referring to structural oppression using the language of psychological abuse is bad because it means that you fall back on blaming a singular figure for structural issues or mechanics rather than analysing and understanding the way in which an entire process takes place that enables and necessitates specific treatment of a person or group of people. Referring to lying and misleading actions by individuals in society at large as âgaslightingâ removes from us the ability to place those actions as part of a wider context because it reduces them a single bad action which is wrong because of what it is, rather than the process in which it takes place, or the thing which it seeks to (re-)produce.
these are the only three posts iâve seen on this thread and i still kind of tilt my head to the side in confusion when reading this. like, can gaslighting really not be used in a systematic way against a group of people in the attempt to make them question their lived experiences and reality? it makes sense to me that the white supremacist regime would use gaslighting as a mechanism to convince people that âalternative factsâ are truth, versus what they might intimately know to be real (racism, misogyny, etc.), which then can lead to immobilization.
i guess iâm not sure how using a specific psychological term to describe a phenomenon that is taking place en masse necessarily decontextualizes from a wider context or prevents a broader critique of overlapping systems of violence.
To be honest Iâm a bit confused by this post as well, because Iâve also thought to myself about the Trump administration and trump himself effectively gaslighting the American people, and I mean this is a different sense than merely lying. Politicians lying is pretty much to be expected, and everyone is aware that politicians lie to achieve their personal means to varying degrees. However, to the degree which 45 does it, where he and his administration have on multiple instances referenced events that never happened, or present âfactsâ which they then build their entire policy on, effectively does feel like he is existing in an alternate reality, and each communication he has forced that alternate reality onto the public.
It is a whole different level imo, and it is designed specifically to make people question the sources of actual real knowledge and facts.
