Fated mates is a trope. All Archeron sisters ending up with bat boys is not. It’s repetition. That is what makes it feel like a cliche. A trope carries emotional weight. A cliche just follows a pattern without depth.

SJM does follow patterns in how she writes the mating bond, but what sets them apart is not the bond itself. It is the journey toward accepting it. She has yet to write a bond where both characters are on equal footing, knowing about it before getting to know each other.

Right now, Elain and Lucien are resisting a bond that will follow them for the rest of their lives until death. They are not close. They are not comfortable. That tension creates space for real character growth. Two people who have every reason not to fall in love but still do, drawn together by a force they can’t ignore, is not a cliche. That is a story. That is what makes the trope land.

Putting Elain and Azriel together would make it the third Archeron and bat boy pairing. That is symmetry for its own sake. Even SJM seems aware of that when she had Rhys question Azriel: just because there are three brothers and three sisters, does that mean you deserve her?

Two people whose only obstacle is miscommunication fixable in one conversation make for a shit story.

Two people who are equals in every way and discover that for themselves while falling in love, especially after fighting it for so long, do not.

Lucien telling Feyre “I would never hurt her” with such a bleak honesty in his voice that she stops her tough girl act and looks to Rhysand for help hits different when you consider

1. Elain is always being hurt by those she loves (and not just romantically either)

2. Lucien blames himself still for the murder of Jesminda.

And gah the angst is too good there.

Lucien Vanserra, an Autumn Court prince, known for being a strong, charismatic, and composed emissary. But maybe there’s more to him than we’ve seen. Maybe he has yet to heal from losing his eye, his first love, a court to call home, and his best friend. Maybe it isn’t easy for him to look at his mate, only to see her avoid his gaze. Maybe it’s hard for him to be surrounded by people with support systems and so much love, yet lack those same things himself.

Maybe he’s hurting and desperately in need of a hug and compassion.

This artwork represents two sides of Lucien: the one everyone expects him to be and the one he truly is.
