🐸 Metamorphosis insectorum surinamensium.. Amsterdam: Voor den auteur, als ook by G. Valck, [1705]. Original source Image description: Historical illustration from “Metamorphosis insectorum surinamensium,” depicting a large, detailed toad with a bumpy, textured body and webbed feet, positioned as if swimming or floating. Surrounding the toad are two smaller frog-like creatures. Above and behind the toad is a green leafy plant with multiple branches and small pink flowers. The ground beneath shows two seashells—one white with a pink interior, the other striped orange and white. The background features horizontal lined shading to suggest water or depth. The overall style is detailed and naturalistic, typical of early 18th-century scientific illustrations.

Happy belated Father's Day to my favorite fathers in the animal kingdom: poison dart frogs! Because look at them carrying their kiddos on their backs. So cute!
Male poison dart frogs carry their young to different water sources to increase the chance that some of them survive.
