     “My Aunt used to say that forbidden magic is only forbidden because someone used it the wrong way.” 

     They chime despite their attention still being fixed firmly to the circle of dried and powdered petals, lighting a wider circle of candles with a flick of a charm. Sure that was a bit of a way to circle around the topic but unlike some sort of blood sacrifice all they were trying to do was deal with some whispers they’d be hearing from the walls recently. The noise was starting to become a bother. Sage runes, and just plain ignoring it didn’t seem to do the trick so why not pull out an old tome now and again.

     “Besides, it’s just a sliiiightly more intense seance. The worst I can do is stir up some dormant energies for a bit. I just need to use this to wake them up, dispel them all from my shop, and then I can sleep.”

Dark Magic sentence starters

I received an anonymous ask requesting starters for necromancy, so I decided to expand upon that idea and create starters for dark magic in general, including necromancy. Enjoy!

What colour is your Soulmark?

Seen as the most popular favorite color, and for a good reason, the blue soulcolor is admired by many, even if they aren’t conscious of it. Friendly, loyal, and always there when you need them, the blue soulcolor is a people pleaser with a heart of gold.

People with this soul color are charismatic in a small way, choosing to speak as much as they listen, and take a genuine interest in people. They look past beauty and see the hidden soul under the skin. Loyal to a fault, they often downplay other’s negative traits as “quirks” and choose to see the best in everyone. They often miss social cues and overstay their welcome without meaning to.

While they might not seem the type to some, the blue soulcolor is likely to fall into fits of depression and self loathing. This is because they have high expectations and hold themselves to strong moral conduct, and failing that moral conduct means failing other people. Even if it’s not their fault, they will choose to take the blame.

When gathering a group of friends, this color likes stability and harmony. They hold onto friendships from their childhood, even if their interests shift, and have a hard time letting people go. Changes in relationships scare them. They will be the first friend to show up at your house when you need them, whether they live a short distance or not.

“Goodness no, I hope not,” Nadia said, suddenly concerned that the wine would stain their hair. If it did, it would mean that she would have to have a word to the Consul about they way he was to conduct himself during their meetings, especially with those she considered to be her honoured guests.. 

“Colourful is putting it mildly,” she stated. “I have never seen a more mismatched group of people trying to lead a country. I do not know how they managed to convince Lucio that they were suitable candidates for the court, yet somehow they did it, and for now we have to put up with them.” 

     “By the looks of things I’m not sure how much leading they’ve been doing...” 

The words slipped off their tongue without hesitance. Part of them felt it a bit inappropriate to be so forward but nonetheless their intuition told them some honesty may be appreciated. Nadia had proven to be quite reasonable, after all, and if they were going to help her then surely they would need to speak their piece every so often. A breath then a smile, warm and reassuring. A shift from the tension of the previous room and the suffocating presence of the courtiers uniqueness. 

     “Have you been out into the city recently, Countess? Ah--” Brows furrow with a moment of recollection, hands wringing together a bit nervously, “Beyond the night you came to my shop, I mean.”

It was unsurprising that Hya knew little about Arya. The older of the pair wasn’t keen on talking much about themselves. If anything, they were nearly as closed off as when they’d shown up, half collapsed at the shop from dehydration and malnutrition. They’d travelled for six days through the desert and the forest to reach Vesuvia, barely sleeping and living only off the few rations they’d packed. It took another week for them to recover, with Hya and Aunt Bella’s help.

“Yeah… it’s different from home,” Arya answered, holding firmly onto Hya’s hand as they followed. Arya looked around, taking in the scent of green moss and strong wood, the faintest floral hint from flowers that bloomed between. The forest felt more like the word home than their birthplace did.

“What about you? Do you like the forest?” It was idle chatter, sure, but hopefully they’d get to knowing eachother a bit better.

     “I like forests. They’re easy to get lost in but there’s new things to find in them.” It was the most talkative they had been all day it would seem. Over something as simple as a maze of trees, “People make stories about forests all the time and I think it’s cause no one’s ever seen all of it so they try to fill in what might be there.” 

There’s a pause, a small hmm, and a tilt of their head.

     “What was your home like?”

The younger gives Arya a curious look. They’ve only seen greenery in their short life. Forests, plains, meadows. The ocean was the newest thing to them and even then there was so much more of it to see. Of other places. There was a wanderlust to their expression that showed they were very keen to hear Arya speak.

Arya wore a wry smirk at that comment. Hyacinthe wouldn’t be the first to make such a remark nor the last. The sigh, however, keyed Arya into something else lingering. They gingerly interlaced their fingers before resting their chin on them as their elbows settled on the table. “Hm~ You seem…. disappointed by those mentions. Are things not going well at your shop? Or… are you perhaps more disappointed in your companions and their absence?”

A blush coats Hyacinthe’s cheek. Though they’re also quick to cover that pink with a lean into their own hand. They really needed to reign things back in a place like this. People can read them far too easily these days.

     “My shop does fine.” They insisted. Business was steady. Usually was. It was never the actual stressor in their life anyhow, “And isn’t that normal to be a bit disappointed when you’re not with friends?” Fingers occupy themselves with a strand of hair, “What about you, Arya? Are you here with company?”

Seeing Hyacinthe so relaxed and free of worry was honestly one of the best things he could see today. Even Faust seemed to pick up in their happiness, the snake weaving her way up their leg and torso to curl around them and give an encouraging squeeze before nosing into their hair. Short!

Asra gave a warm laugh at his familiar. “Well I can’t argue with Faust here. It is a nice look for you. You also seem a lot happier with it short like this.”

He gingerly brushed his fingers through the chopped ends of their hair, smile fond before his fingertips brushed against their neck. “I like it. I really so. But I like seeing your smile even more.”

     “If Faust likes it then I know I made a good decision.” They give the snake a few soft strokes under the chin as she nestles. Red eyes cast back to Asra, inquisitive, “Do I?”

They really did feel like it to be honest. Fresh and new. Kind of like the white hues that had started to creep into their dark hair. They don’t even mind as their trail of thought is interrupted by Asra’s fingers brushing the back of their head. It’s difficult not to lean into the touch. Hyacinthe could remember how nice it felt whenever he would brush it. It was a soothing grounding motion. Something that could coax them out of even their most dazed state with a bit of time.

     “Do you think we could go out and do something?” Sense of time was still skewed but it felt like they had been cooped up for too long, “Or do you need to head out again?”

     “Do you like it?”

They ask, running fingers through freshly cut hair, still trying to determine where they felt it most comfortable to sit. They had been thinking about it. For days. Maybe weeks. Something felt like it had to change and they had taken great pains to try and make it as clean a job as possible though the messy nature of their hair seemed to make that effort a bit null. It still liked to flair and poof out in whatever direction it pleased. Nevertheless, there was a smile on their face, more relaxed, more content. Like Hyacinthe had just dropped something heavy off their back. For once in a long time there was a warm glow to their face.

     “It’s starting to get warm, anyway. This’ll be much more comfortable, don’t you think?”
