I know we all love protective Azriel, but can we just talk about how fiercely Elain protected him when the beast hurt his wings?

Some parts of the fandom keep twisting Elain’s story into “she’ll reject the bond now but eventually accept it and end up with Lucien anyway.” Even when nothing from SJM or marketing suggests that.

That logic is honestly uncomfortable because it echoes a really old trope: the idea that “no” just means “not yet.”

And honestly, that sounds like it’s getting very close to a certain trope in our culture.

The series has repeatedly emphasized choice and agency. A character saying no shouldn’t be rewritten into “she’ll change her mind later” just to make a ship work.

NO means NO….

Elriels are the only true Elain stans and no one can change my mind on this.

We always center everything around Elain, never a man. We don’t sit in a corner and cry about a man’s happiness.

Elain had always been gentle and sweet- and I had considered it a different sort of strength. A better strength. To look at the hardness of the world and choose, over and over, to love, to be kind. She had been always so full of light.

so if Elain and her mating bond with Lucien are truly a scenario where nature just straight up chose wrong, where it was more about biology than true love, as the author seemed to imply then that leaves us with two scenarios:

1. An Elucien endgame where the story is, essentially, about learning to live with the hand you’ve been dealt and find it within yourself to make the most out of a situation you didn’t initially want or weren’t comfortable with

Or 2. An Elriel endgame where the story is about defying fate, expectations, and the breaking free from the norm to reclaim your autonomy and choose the love and life you want for yourself despite all odds

And some people are really going to sit here and say with their full chest that option one is the more romantic one?!? that this makes for the most impactful story and the best opportunity for Elain’s character growth?!?! brotherrrrrr like come on

How Elain looks at Lucien :

“Her brown eyes were wary. Usually, that look was reserved for Lucien. The male was definitely in the family room.”

How Elain looks at Azriel :

“She looked up at him, her face so trusting and hopeful and open that he knew she had no idea that he had done unspeakable things that sullied his hands far beyond their scars.”

The difference and besides, isn’t the antonym of wary actually trusting? Interesting.

ok yeah the bonus chapter was hot, but i absolutely love how it gently showed that elain and az can read each other using the most subtle of clues.

and it's mutual

they've been forced to communicate through soft, quick glances and gentle, forbidden nudges for so long that they've developed a special connection all their own. i just find it sweet with a twinge of sadness.

I really hope we get to have a scene between Az and Elain where they are cuddling each other in bed and then az gives her a soft forehead kiss and elain kisses his cheek in return while giggling bc they make wach other so loved and happy. Yeah..that would be so cute

Elain, at least, would be too polite to send Lucien away when he wanted to help. She was too polite to send him away on a normal day. She just ignored him or barely spoke to him until he got the hint and left.
