A Gift For Mom & Dad
If Forest Schools get the chance to add a Garden to their environment offers a HUGE advantage for those ultimate cooking chef's at home that we call Mom and Dad! Bringing home a little surprise such as fresh produce allows children to give themselves a pat-on-the back knowing that they had contributed so much to their very own garden creations!
Let’s take a quick moment to back track to a few posts back regarding the Edible Landscape Garden. Children not only have create a garden mainly based on fruits and vegetables, but most definitely of different herbs! Growing your own herbs offers a more plentiful feel to the freshness these plants give especially through their distinct aroma they have.
Take a look at the link about too see what interesting herbs you are able to incorporate into your very own Edible Garden Landscape of your Forest School and enjoy the smell.
Make It Last!
Documentation is an essential process for Forest School practitioners. It gives them the advantage to keep note of all of the great things the children do, discover, explore, and create. Documentation can take so many forms, that it would be silly if any educator does not do such a thing!
Documentation can tell a story on its on through pictures. Pictures offer an opportunity for children to look back at what they have done, and remember the great times they shared together. Pictures let children to start conversations with everyone around them including teachers. Best of all, they are here to keep forever!
To make the documentation process more interesting, give children the chance to take pictures on their own! One alterative to incorporate in a Forest School setting is using disposable cameras from your local Dollar Store. Each child would have their very own, personalized camera for them to use at every chance possible and photograph throughout their entire day of exploring.
A great example of putting Documentation into practice, would use the opportunity of the creation of the Edible Landscape as mentioned in a previous post. Children will be able to capture the different stages each plant goes through until it has reached its full growth to pick. With these pictures, educators can print out the pictures and create a large board pasting each picture and creating a lesson on its own such as "Photosynthesis."

Let's Grow A Garden!!!
Edible Landscapes are a large concept on its own! However, it can really have a close relationship with Forest Schools and the experiences children gain from it.
Growing a garden is a great advantage for children to truly understand the significance of food and how it connects with nature, especially through the stages of its growing process. Introducing the concept of edible landscapes can easily come from a conversation, such as the during snack/lunch time. Asking the children what types of fruit or vegetables they have will engage them in the interaction. "What do you think about creating our very own garden?" This will spark up definite curiosity and excitement from all of the children.
Ask the children what they would like to grow in their garden. Start a list! Write every option down; this will your first step in the designing process of a potential garden.
"The Canadian Wildlife Federation" is an awesome resource to use to help create your very own edible landscape in your environment. For further exploration, you can explore their site pulling out ideas and introduce them to the children.

Musical inspirations can be a great component to add to a Forest School setting. You will have those handful of children who most likely do not want to participate along with the activities and exploration being done within the outdoor setting. So, as a compromise let those children find a place to sit, relax and have some alone time. A small enclosed area such as a man-made hut or tipi can offer children a place of serenity. When these children are sitting inside the sheltered space, bring a portable CD Player, and put on some soft, sounds of nature. The sounds of birds, nature, water, wind and trees really connects the children with the outdoor surroundings they are in and get them in an inspirational mood to want to join in on the fun.
Just have a quick listen to the above, and let the music and inspiration slowly come about!
YouTube is a great source to use to find thousands of different types of soft, calming music for any setting possible!
