Click here and here to watch a couple of short videos about the “lake” in the Palais Garnier basement, which was temporarily drained of water during the filming of this footage. This gives a good idea of how tall the walls of the cistern actually are.
One thing is for sure, it’s a good thing that Erik rowed a rowboat instead of punting a gondola. If Erik had tried standing in a gondola in the real “lake,” he’d probably hit his head on the ceiling!
