The Faithful Heart

100-word drabble Henry realizes the source of his immortality never came from the gun that killed him, but an object that always, miraculously, finds its way back to him.

In his laboratory, Henry froze, confronted with an idea that had been lingering in the back of his mind for some time now. Slowly, he sat down, putting thoughts together in his head.

“Abraham,” he called up the stairs, voice steady.

On the desk in front of Henry lay his golden pocket-watch, looking very innocent. “This is my immortality.” He gestured to the object. “It’s always been this. I lose all my other clothes—this remains behind, and it’s always ticking.”

Abe stared at it in horror. “…exactly how many times have you dropped that thing, Pops?” he said weakly.

Little-known downsides of immortality:

Tearing your favourite article of clothing and discovering that it’s irreplaceable because the technique of its manufacture has been lost

Realising you’ve thought of the perfect comeback to someone who’s been dead for three hundred years

Not being able to eat your favourite dish anymore because the source of some critical ingredient has gone extinct

Having strong opinions about sports that are no longer played

Getting a song from the 13th Century stuck in your head and being unable to get it out because you don’t remember how it ends and you’re the only person on Earth who knows it

Having that perfect pun you’ve been waiting forever for a chance to use stop working due to linguistic drift

I had a dream that I saw a commercial for Forever season 2 on tv and everyone was excited. The commercial started with a narrator voiceover talking about something that sounded suspiciously familiar, and then the camera shots and actors showed up and I began to realize what it was and just sort of gaped at the tv in amazement and online tHE ENTIRE FANDOM had gone nuclear and I’m just remembering this dream now and it makes me sad

I had a dream that Henry ran into another version of himself, only he was a way younger new baby immortal, and saw him die and they were both still freaked out about having to tell each other about their problems.
