a lot of rgu references in modern cartoons feel unearned but they are extremely earned in steven universe. like it's kind of crazy to me that when people talk about utena references in su they're like "rose imagery! swords getting pulled out of bodies! gay duels!" and then you watch the show as a whole and it's like "in this episode pearl takes connie to a sky arena to train and perpetuates the cycle of her own unprocessed trauma and grief by convincing connie to believe that her own safety and comfort are worthless and her only duty should be defending her 'liege' at any cost" and it's like yeah ok. i think you deserve to reference the best animated show ever made when you're dealing with themes like this
