ok I'm ready to leave the steven universe bubble and watch some black and white thematically simple morally digestible queer media. the vampire lestat episode six here I come
It's fun to draw based on a fandom that only I and Rebecca Sugar remember. So I quickly drew Blue Diamond while I had some extra five minutes at work.
dumbass (affectionate)
also I cry every time steven reunites with himself. every time I watch the episode, every time I watch the clip, every time the clip is referenced in the background of a video essay. I'm about to cry as I type this now
a lot of my criticisms of steven universe have softened upon rewatch, but probably the one that surprised me the most was how I feel about change your mind. undoubtedly, aspects of the finale were rushed (sugar has talked about how they had to compromise certain things and were essentially punished by the network for the wedding episode) but in terms of the heel-turn made by the diamonds, I no longer really feel like it was "too fast" and "unrealistic," as I originally did. yes, the diamonds turned on a dime, but their characterization has always been (intentionally) one-dimensional and flat. they are eternally in stasis, defining themselves by one trait. it makes sense that when confronted, they would revert to the other extreme. they kind of remind me of people who leave a high-control group (like a cult, abusive family, religious sect, etc) and attempt to "deconstruct" by immediately pivoting to some other system that will tell them what to do and how to be, rather than slowing down to do the (very difficult!) work of figuring out how to think for themselves and build a unique identity.
it's also compelling because the finale shows us that the diamonds initially begin to change their minds because steven shows them how their actions are hurting THEMSELVES. they don't just do a 180 and immediately become empathetic and loving people because they're hit by steven's magic compassion beam; they realize they have been making themselves miserable for no reason AND that they were completely wrong about something that was foundational to their existence (rose/pink/steven's true nature). which is ego shattering. so they start worshipping STEVEN as their new arbiter of what is right and wrong, and doing whatever steven wants them to do (if he's right about this, why wouldn't he be right about everything?!). which yes, does quickly stop their imperial expansion and most of the direct harm they're doing to others. but it doesn't "redeem" them. it's the first step on a long, long road which they have to decide for themselves to continue following at every turn. most of which we don't directly see because steven, our pov character, (rightfully lol) finds them overbearing and annoying
it's all just so irony-poisoned. they spit on stuff there was no reason to spit on. mocking lestat's s1 hair is a good example. what, you're embarrassed in hindsight that you didn't get a shitty wig for sam reid and instead worked with the hair he already naturally had? you want to make his shorter hair diegetic to louis's recounting of new orleans, even though lestat's hair is longer in louis's recounting of paris, and break the suspension of disbelief the audience can easily have when revisiting s1 with lestat's shorter hair? none of the moments like this are terrible in isolation but together they paint a pretty cowardly picture. i cannot be seduced by a story that is working so hard to disenchant every aspect of its own narrative and the narrative that came before it.
Two World Cup finalists from opposing teams in this fucking picture, this sport isn't real
Context for anyone who is wondering: Lamine Yamal's parents won an UNICEF raffle for a charity photoshoot in which Barça players posed with kids, and 5 month old Lamine happened to get 20yo Messi. Which is like. Literally insane
I lowkey hate when programs talk to me in a friendly way. "don't worry, nearly there!" Shut up. It should say "loading 64.3% completed. Do not turn off device" and absolutely nothing else. You arent my friend you are computer. Act like it
kicking my feet and giggling like a schoolgirl in love to myself while muttering "i'm going to kill you. i'm going to fucking kill you"
