WOKE AKIO IS ETERNAL 🫶🏳️🌈🥀
in the dueling arena, female black rose duelists wear the prince's clothes: this gendered expression of power, which is so significant when utena does it outside the symbolic space, becomes natural, even from the most mundanely feminine women. I say mundanely feminine to emphasize that these are not women who feel any angst about being women. kouze, wakaba, keiko, kanae, and shiori may be tortued, they even may be tortured about the how the nature of their womanhood affects their relationship with other women (shiori being the most obvious, but think also of how any friendly relationship kanae may want from anthy is affected by the fact that she is another women in akio's life, or how keiko is targeted by nanami in a way nanami would never target a man, or how wakaba's feelings about anthy stealing saionji are clearly a projection of how she feels about anthy stealing utena which she cannot verbalize because she's been raised to center male attention), but they never turn toward their own womanhood as the fault in the situation.
To people who complain about Utena's uniform clearly not being the standard boys uniform while being treated like one: that's the point.
The world of Ohtori is built on false dichotomies. The savior and the one being saved. If you're not a princess, you must be a witch. If you don't want to be abused, you must become the abuser. Utena's uniform is a boys one simply because it's not a girls one.
That's why Utena's identity is so confusing to people in Ohtori, who struggle to categorize her into their ideas of what she should be. She can't be a girl, because she refuses to embody the role of the princess, and she can't fully become a prince because in the end, she's still a girl. The complexities of her experience, like the uniqueness of her uniform, are ignored for the sake of fitting her into a box. She has a hard time figuring it out herself, wanting to be independent and strong while still craving love and approval, which ends up getting exploited by Akio. It's only at the end that she accepts that she can't become a prince, while still refusing to be made into a helpless princess. That plays a big part in her being so revolutionary.

adding a gun to my island might've been an awesome decision
We joke about the akio sex car but truthfully what a well done metaphor for sexual assault. A car can only ever have one driver, the person in control of where you’re going and how you get there. The passenger, ultimately, has no real power to ensure you get to your destination safely; that’s up to the driver. If the driver chooses to drive recklessly and dangerously, the passenger has no choice but to be there for the ride. It’s such a simple and effective way to show loss of control and helplessness
Finally finished my mikage AMV!
Thinking back to that scene where Utena hits Mikage in episode 23… He’s almost asking Utena to beat him up. Maybe if she hurts him at least she’ll regret it and he’ll live for at least a little bit more in someone else’s mind
Black roses, for the failed revolutionary.
A heart that yearns for eternity, too, could be considered beautiful.

I really love the theory that Kanae was the previous duelist champion
