The first reason for the foundation of what became the European Union was to create a stable and co-operative political and economic environment across the continent. We must never forget that within living memory Europe was the birthplace of Nazism, fascism, communism, anarchism, two world wars and the holocaust.
Even if stopping anything like this happening again were its only purpose, the EU would be an undeniably good idea.
