IF MILES EDGEWORTH were being entirely honest, the last thing he felt like doing right at this moment was celebrating. Yet, even he could hardly stand to disrupt the happiness all around him; Wright and Co. Law Offices had been practically packed to capacity since early evening, all with people who had come to wish Mr. Wright well after securing yet another acquittal in his short time as a defense attorney. Only this time, the cause for celebration was double that of the usual — a case that had gone unsolved for fifteen years had been put to rest at last, thanks to this rookie lawyer, of all people. To say that it baffled the mind was nothing short of an understatement. DL-6 was officially over, and Miles knew that he should be happy, should feel at least some semblance of peace and resolution settling in anytime now … and yet.
HE THOUGHT IT best to keep these confusing, troubling feelings to himself, lest he appear at all ungrateful. Wright’s efforts had proven him wrong on the very thing he’d been terrified of most all these years: that he might have been the one to accidentally murder his own father. There were no words for how thankful he was, truly, that these memories — however awful — could finally start tying themselves up for good. But it was, strangely enough, almost as if Miles didn’t quite know who to be without the guilt. It had been such an integral part of his identity for so long, it FRIGHTENED him to think that he ought to leave it behind now and discover who he truly was beneath all the years of self-hatred and punishment.
STANDING IN THE far corner of the room as quietly as possible, avoiding the rest of the partygoers, seemed far easier than actually admitting any of that to anybody. But of course, there seemed to be little avoiding Phoenix Wright’s watchful eye. As the defense attorney approached him, Edgeworth made an effort not to look as distinctly rattled as he felt. He’d given the man enough to worry over these past few days, he need not involve Wright in yet another crisis of his.
❝ I’M … NOT USUALLY one for parties, ❞ he said lamely, not quite able to summon that same unshakable confidence from the courtroom. ❝ In fact, I find it rather difficult to believe that all these people are truly here to celebrate my exoneration. Do you think they might have just wanted the free refreshments? ❞ A dry, sardonic little smirk twitched upwards at the corners of his mouth.
DL-6 ... IT WAS A CASE THAT HAD BROUGHT SO MUCH TRAUMA TO SO MANY UNFORTUNATE SOULS — to say that the culmination of this case was a relief would be a severe understatement. Solving the case meant putting horrifying assumptions at rest and coming face to face with the truth — thankfully in this case, the truth did set them free, especially for one man in particular. Taking that into account, Phoenix would have thought that Miles Edgeworth would at least pretend to be happy...... but, there he was, sulking in a corner of his office, away from the hustle and bustle of the party.
Phoenix let out a sigh, approaching his childhood best friend with a gentle smile, laughing at his commentary. ❛ Well, seeing as all the refreshments are gone already you’d probably be right about that, Edgeworth. ❜ However, there was a cup in his hand, which he offered up. ❛ I seem to have the last one here though. Take it. You haven’t had anything since you walked in. ❜ Of course Phoenix had been watching Miles since the start of the party ; this was not only a celebration of him winning the case, but of Miles’ liberation, in more ways than one. Tonight was special. He wanted Miles to feel the same way.
❛ Come on, Edgeworth, would it kill you to smile at least once tonight ? We’re all here for you. Forget me. I just got lucky. ❜ A half-truth ; Phoenix did have the devil’s own luck it seemed, but he truly was a capable defense attorney. There was no way he was going to sit back and watch his best friend suffer all by himself. Besides, he didn’t believe for a second that Miles was capable of murder. Despite his rough exterior, he knew Miles had a heart of gold. He was a good man and Phoenix never doubted that. ❛ Well, if you’re not going to be happy tonight, let me tell you, I’m happy enough for the both of us.... ❜
