I like the word @rapo4 used to describe 2017: unrelenting. I started the year angry + anxious, going so far as to promise I would never bring a child into a world where he-who-must-not-be-named was president (whoops!). And then the @womensmarch happened and I felt a surge of sanguineness; a new fire in my belly. In February, @sam_mason got down on one knee in Barcelona and asked me to marry him at the very same thoroughfare where a terrorist would mow down a crowd of innocents 6 months later. I spent the 9 hour flight home battling a brutal case of food poisoning. There’s nothing like illness on an airplane to humble you and confirm that your partner buys into that whole “in sickness and in health” thing. April brought a lot of professional changes that affirmed that I am so insanely lucky to work with the most tenacious team in the business. I turned 30 in June. My brothers bought me 30 beautiful white roses and made me feel like a million bucks. Sam and I sipped champagne, slurped oysters and danced like maniacs with @karenlawanna. On the last day of our trip, we were robbed at gunpoint. The whole situation was a stark, sad reminder of the disparity + desperation that’s rampant in America today. On the flip side, one of the best memories of 2017 was a weekend well spent with my cousin crew in Arizona, feting @cocomckeegan and @emckeegan16. I don’t know where I would be w/o the women in my family. A few days before Halloween, I found out that I was pregnant. Between this realization and my impending wedding, I’ve never needed my own mother more. And I’ve been so lucky to have her and my father’s endless outpouring of encouragement. My dad tracks my pregnancy and sends me weekly little notes to let me know what size fruit we can compare Junebug to. The baby will be born between my birthday and his, another Gemini fueled by creativity and contradictions.
