Do you have any physical descriptions or reference sheets of the characters? I know of their basic appearances as described in the fic, but I just wanted to ask in case there happened to be any more descriptions that can be added (like hairstyles, what they like to wear, height, etc.) I'm LOVING the fic so far and would like to draw the characters when I can :D

this is SO sweet of you oh my goodness. when i was first posting coding for coffee, i was unsure if people would actually like the plot i had decided on or if it would just be me 😭 so that have someone mention they wanna draw the characters is just insane to me, it means the world.

one actual reference we can use is the fanart that my lovely girlfriend is drawing for this fic!! it’s still a work in progress, but the characters themselves are quite clear and how she’s so amazingly drawn them is the exact way i imagine them (and aren’t they GORGEOUS 😭)

do you have a rough estimate of how long the fic will be?? 👀

i actually do! my only issue is that i don’t know exactly how accurate it might be, but i’m thinking definitely over 50 chapters and possibly up to 100 if i manage to think up enough silly scenarios to put them in. my current plan is around 50-70, but i’ve also been refining some plot ideas that might very easily get the count higher, so you guys have a LOT of coding for coffee to come LMFAO

Silly question: Am I allowed to beat Avery's parents with an 8-bit pixelated crowbar? Genuine question: Are we allowed to have Avery invite Derek to the dinner party at Jane's? As a little treat? Also, can we get more interactions with Derek and Daisy? I want him and Avery to adopt the tiny bean and give her the childhood she deserves, even if I know it wouldn't likely happen, and making them interact more fuels my new favorite delusion, lmao-

silly answer: absoLUTELY you can. believe me, i constantly want to. i hate those people with a passion.

genuine answer: i already do have a plan involving derek and the dinner, but as i dont want to spoil that is the most i’m going to say on that matter for now :))) BUT, as for daisy and derek, absolutely there will be more interactions with the two of them. i adore them so much and seeing derek with a little kid is just argjgkkggkg so adorable, i completely understand why avery is so head over heels for that man.

What kind of books would Derek/Avery read? What are their love languages? What kind of coffee does Avery drink? What are their favourite foods? Favourite animals? Can we see them be friends sometime soon?

1) derek would definitely be big on non-fictional books. i think that he’d be quite a fan of history books, both mythical history and history of real world events. also, as hastur was so big on bugs when he was younger (hastur was also definitely a dinosaur kid, no one can tell me otherwise), derek became quite big on them as well and read a lot of books about insects, but would have stopped doing so when hastur left.

as for avery, i can see him being very big on comic books (he would definitely be a marvel kid growing up), but i think he’d definitely also been big on reading books about natural disasters and marine animals (great combo) growing up, so he would have a fond spot for books about that

2) avery, as is obvious by him paying for all of derek’s drinks, for getting stella the hair pins that she liked from the market, and offering to buy romulus a treat for his birthday, does enjoy gift-giving. he’s a big fan of making people feel loved by listening to what they like and buying them as a little surprise. otherwise, though, he’s HUGE on physical touch and quality time, as well of words of affirmation :)

then we’ve got derek! he would definitely be acts of service, because he likes doing things for people to make their days a little bit easier if he can. quality time is also a big one of his that he’s going to discover later, as to him, his own time is the most important thing to him and it’s proof that he really cares about someone if he wants to share his time with them

3) avery is not hugely picky with his coffees, it really depends on the day and his mood. he actually does enjoy flat whites just as derek does. however, when he’s tired, he likes having a black coffee with a little bit of milk and half a teaspoon of sugar

4) derek isn’t hugely picky with what he eats, but his favorite foods would definitely be what his family (specifically, his mom) makes him. in this fic, though i’m not sure if i’ve explicitly mentioned it yet, derek is of african american descent, and he grew up in the south; some of the dishes that his mom would make were aligned with ensuring their kids kept touch with their heritage, so dishes such as jambalaya, fried catfish, southern fried chicken, and suits, with jambalaya probably being one of derek’s favourites. one of his comfort dishes, though, that he would eat a lot at uni because of how easy it was to make, was mac n cheese.

as for avery, he’s a big fan of italian foods; he loves pasta, he loves pizza, he’s just a MASSIVE lover of bread generally. if i had to pick a favourite for him, i’d say it would be aglio e olio.

both our boys also have a sweet tooth. avery is a massive fan of baked goods, derek is a big fan of anything chocolate flavored.

5) avery loves loves loves dogs. he loves all animals though, but i’d say his favourite would be a tie between dogs and hammerhead sharks

derek, as if obvious by his clear love for romulus, loves cats over every other animal. but he does have a soft spot for horses, because he grew up where a lot of people in the surrounding area owned them and would often go and visit them to feed them carrots with hastur

6) the two of them will become friends somewhat soonish :)) for now im just hugely enjoying dragging out their argumentative banter with one another (which, to be fair, will not stop when they become friends)

additional note from me that does not relate to the question but i do want anyone reading this to understand, i am not of african american descent and i am not a person of colour. i have done some (and definitely plan to do more as i continue writing this fanfiction) research into foods that are culturally significant or play an important role to african american people and communities, but, as a white person myself, i do have limited experience in terms of personal relatability. so, if anything i say seems incorrect or has the potential to be/is harmful in any way, please let me know immediately and i will absolutely educate and correct myself, because the last thing that i want is for my lack of knowledge to become something harmful.

Would we possibly get to see a chapter where Avery's off but still comes in to bother Derek? Or a maybe some more chapters where Avery's not Working™? I really love how you're portraying Avery but I wish we could see him outside of The Beanstalk more often

oh ABSOLUTELY trust i have chapters for him being off work, like a BUNCH of them. right now im just using the beanstalk as the main place where they communicate so it’s easier if avery is there and working often (+ mike never lets him leave lollll), but i am planning to do a bunch of chapters where avery is off of work and outside the beanstalk

ahhh thank you so much for the second question!! i think derek definitely wouldnt be one to put stickers on his laptop (specifically not his work one, though maybe a personal one at home?) but avery would definitely have stickers on his laptop (i like to think he’d have a lot of video game stickers, so maybe some minecraft stickers, maybe valorant, etc) and i think when him and derek got closer avery would definitely convince derek to add stickers onto his laptop

hiiiii!!! thank you so much for all of the questions, i’ll do my best to answer them while also not giving tooooo many spoilers

1) henry looks like hastur because. uhm. i can’t quite explain yet unfortunately 😭 they do look very similar though!!!! very very similar. i wonder why. derek also wonders why, but he thinks it’s because he’s placing the vague memories he has of his brother onto someone else’s face. on my behalf though, why he looks so similar to derek… we will have to wait and see

2) YES! absolutely. this is smth i can say without spoiling because its always been my plan. it’ll be a lot later but yes yes yes we will see that

3) oh my goodness i actually have plans for this for a WHILE later, ive been drafting my plans for the first kiss seen for a long time now. it won’t be anytime soon because i wanna build up their friendship first, but they will be having their first kiss eventually. when exactly? i cannot say yet, mostly cause i myself don’t entirely know. but i can say to look forward to the scene because i have a few ideas and they’re all amazingly cute
