Duke is normally a hot horse, anyone that knows him, knows him for how much he prances, leaps, plays around, crow hopping etc. It has always been him from when he was young. I have had his back xrayed a few years back, saddle checked, and a full workup done. He was totally fine, it was just duke being duke.
The beginning of summer, something was different, he was trying to bronc, different from his normal "playing around" he was bucking every ride. I tried "riding it out", changing saddles, bits, nothing seemed to change the behaviour. Duke didn't appear to be sore when running your fingers down his back, but I knew something was off somewhere.
Dr P came out and checked him out, she decided to xray his back just to be safe. He wasn't reacting to her proding his back, but his X-rays showed mild kissing spine. We decided that surgery would be a good option.
At the beginning of July, Duke was diagnosed with Kissing Spine by Dr P, from Elders Equine. The surgery will cost anywhere from $1500-$2000.
Duke is going for surgery the week of August 10th.
When hearing $1500 - $2000 it doesn't sound too bad for what the surgery is.
But it is all the costs after and before. They are adding up fast.
Dukes board is going up a ton as he is on stall rest, for added straw and labor.
Gas money for going out twice a day. (We live 30 mins away). Buying things to prepare for surgery. (We have spent $500 already!) The vet bill for xrays, nevermind the vet bills for aftercare. It quickly adds up and then you're looking over $3k into $4k, without including board/gas.
I hate asking for help, but with covid and not working right now, but as a last resort.. I am having to.
Anything helps.. don't feel you have to.. I know we are all suffering due to covid.
