*High schooler writing an essay at 9:42pm that's due at 11:59pm voice.* In the novel American Psycho, the protagonist Patrick Bateman is shown getting basic information about the band Genesis wrong. Bateman says that the title of Genesis' ninth studio album ...And Then There Were Three... is "a reference to band member Peter Gabriel, who left the group to start a lame solo career," (Ellis). As we all know, it was Steve Hackett, not Peter Gabriel, who left the group to start an epic, not lame, solo career. Further showing his ignorance on Genesis lore, Bateman says this while talking about "House by the Sea":

"Mike Banks gets to show off his virtuosic guitar skills while Tom Rutherford washes the tracks over with dreamy synthesizers," (Ellis).

Once again, everyone knows that Mike Rutherford was the bassist of Genesis, and Tony Banks was the keyboardist. As Bateman is shown doing many universally frowned upon behaviors, such as murder and not respecting the signage on animal enclosures, throughout the novel, he serves as a personification of the evils of the late twentieth century. Thus, the reader can make the connection that not having an unhealthy investment in the personal lives of progressive rock musicians is indicative of being ontologically evil.
