Ambiguity
What are our perceptions of Identity and how does an individual seek to define their own identity? Most often by a series of associations to existing culture aspects such as: art, music, material, sexuality, gender, and experience. Through these associations any individual inscribes their own identity and from identity becomes the individualized human experience. Because of our identities we cannot see past our own existence. Even being empathetic provides a limited experience and is only relatable to our own experiences.
In my work Ambiguity I seek to create an experience that is altering and forces the listener to step out of their own identity and assume a different role. My work is primarily derived from the video American Reflexxx by Alli Coates and Signe Pierce whose work not only deal with identity politics but also so much more. American Relfexxx is a powerful piece of art and is enlightening to cultural fears of gender ambiguity and our immediate reactions to the unknown. After viewing American Relfexxx multiple times I found I still felt separated from the performance artist.
Ambiguity seeks to separate the usual roles of the viewer and integrate them into a direct experience of the artist. Ambiguity is a build off of the shared ideas of American Relfuxxx but more emphasis has been placed on identity ambiguity and our societies inherent fear of it.

Articulating Ideals
These GIFS are the articulation of interpreting the work of other artists. These GIFS are not direct responses to other artists but merely my own need to convey my own ideas and emotions that are realized when viewing each of the artists work. M.C. Escher, Tom Waits, John Darnielle, and Vance Kirkland have always heavily influenced my own work and propelled me to grow and develop as an artist. The GIFS not only help to reenforce each artists iconic status but brings the organic aspect of humanity to an inorganic medium.
Each GIF has a still image placed to an active background, each background has been datamoshed with work that is relative to the artist or could be seen as an expression of emotion expressed through abstraction. John Darnielle breaks through barriers and reveals narratives of everyday life. M.C. Escher works in artistic mathematics defying the conventions of naturalism. Vance Kirkland wanders through abstraction covering vast amounts of space. While Tom Waits is the last working man, never compromising. It can be hard to convey the influence each of these artists have instilled in me but I feel my intention is clear and my work provides depth and definition to each artist.

“Breaking Conceptions”
Datamoshed John Darnielles portion of Aesop Rocks Coffee video. This video was datamoshed for the final GIF I am creating. I didn’t encode the audio originally so I quickly edited in a portion of DJ BigWiz None Shall Pass remix considering silence can be miserable.
I’ll admit some of the fire parts run a little long but I still find this work highly enjoyable and a great example of datamoshing.
