A former scientist? This was way cooler than the Rigellain Recorders ever were. This Autobot managed to assume the shape and size and full appearance of a human-made construct - completely undetected - while presumably still being entirely sentient. On top of that, Optimus said he was a scientist which - even cooler. Tony had so many questions. He was tempted to write them all down and have FRIDAY store them for later. He could be a little bit overwhelming when he got too enthusiastic about something. Did Autobots sleep? Did they eat? Did the Tower even have anything close to resembling food substances for them? Was Tony being a bad host?

Tony’s thought processes ground to a halt with Optimus’ next sentences.

“Howard? Yeah… Howard was my father. Wait, did you - were you in the second World War? You knew my dad? How long have you been here, exactly? What are you doing here now? I - so many questions.”

In the scope of the wars that were and what was to come, Optimus had familiarized himself well enough with the fact that earth’s enemies could pose as much a threat to the Autobots as they did the humans themselves. Thanos, especially, could prove immensely difficult given the powers he was taking in the form of the Inifinity Stones and the mission of genocide he espoused. Though far battle-hardened to succumb to true fear, even he couldn’t ignore the looming sense of foreboding, like their being there wouldn’t be enough. That something greater than the collision of Cybertron and Earth that had occurred but a few years ago could bring a far worse calamity. It went far beyond seeking allies. Innocent lives were at stake, and Earth was abundant with it. Precious life he’d die to protect if need be. 

“Yes, but only briefly. Between the years 1940 and 1945, we supplied our aid to the Allied Forces in the European theater. It was then I came into contact with Howard Stark, a decision that proved beneficial to us both. In exchange for out help, he kept the reality of us being here a guarded secret, contained only in SHEILD’s vaults. Something to protect humanity and to disguise our coming from the Decepticons.”

A gigantic truck with blue flames driving into the atrium with very little collateral damage was not the strangest thing Tony Stark had ever witnessed. It wasn’t even the strangest thing he’d witnessed this week. That truck magically transforming into a vaguely anthropomorphic structure and talking, though. That was pretty high up on the list. Actually… Maybe not. Recorder 451 was basically the same without the truck. Fair-to-middling on Tony’s ‘weird’ scale, then. Tony pushed through to the front of the crowd, tensed to call his suit if absolutely necessary. 

“I’m Tony Stark of the Avengers and Stark Unlimited, from the planet Earth. I’m in charge in this instance. What can I do for a fine upstanding… Autobot such as yourself?”

It still sometimes struck him how a race so seemingly fragile and small could accomplish all that it did. The throng of people yielded before the new arrival, something familiar about the man. Though the company itself had been made known to him, it wasn’t until he introduced himself that it became apparent who he was. Several stories tall required that he genuflect, still looming an enormous, pronged shadow over this Tony Stark and his people. “Tony Stark. I am pleased to make your acquaintance as one former scientist to another,” Optimus greeted formally, voice resonant as faraway thunder. The hum of electricity proved static through his receptors, but the signals to and from his men was still clear. 

“Are you progeny of Howard Stark? I knew him in the nascence of one of your Terran wars--the second of the largest of the 20th century. It was honor to serve alongside him and your countrymen’s troops.”

What might this preternatural chill make of his kind, when ice gathered into every point of articulation? The question scraped wicked against her skull, no matter how she tried to banish it. She did not want to know. She did not want to see what lay at the end of this. Pulling her cloak tighter around her, she leveled an unblinking stare upon this traveler.

“You’ve nothing to apologize for.” Her own voice was a whisper on frozen winds, a melody from the other end of a tunnel. “Though I wonder how you came to be so far from home.”

Like the chill upon Pluto itself, of cosmic winds and...death. An organic death where sparks became souls and fled to these realms--he’d heard of it only from Terran fairy tales and from the differing modes in which they worshiped, all carrying a commonality among them. There was...detachment, heaviness like chains. Even this woman recalled one barely half-alive.

But, it held no terror in him. A graveness was present, severity writ upon the mechanized features and cold blue optics. “Thank you. I protect this planet and its inhabitants. But, even I do not know everything there is about it.”

”It is...inexplicable,” the autobot said enigmatically, not even entirely knowing himself. The spiritual where organic lifeforms was vastly different from that of Cybertron, the Primes infinite beings much like this one was--made of electricity and sparks and the ores of space itself, the collapse of nebulae sentient in their skin. Was this one connected to the Terran planet of Earth? How stark and different they both seemed, echoes at the furthest corners of the universe, both alive in ways that couldn’t be quantified by the other. Even if not constructed of skin and bone, but starlight and holiness that seemed unknown to his ilk. “Ah’Jhyen--I see. I am Optimus Prime of Cybertron. From which star system do you originally hail? Perhaps I might calibrate and locate it for you.”

Dozens of Terran years had passed since they’d last been in contact with SHIELD; since the Second World War had he been in contact with Howard Stark, one of its founders. An enormous red semi with blue flame decals might have stood apart in the streets of Manhattan, but the drive from their own base at Sector 7 in DC had given Optimus had his compatriots time to think, to wonder. Disaster loomed high, bearing with the heavy weight of eons. As if something was set to crack. Into the enormous atrium that appeared a lab beneath Avenger’s Tower did they take pause, an audience of humans paying witness to the complex whirring mechanisms as the autobot transformed, looming stories over them all.

“I am Optimus Prime of the Autobots, from the planet Cybertron. And I wish to speak to whom is considered leader.”

Through the cold winds of Pluto did this so evoke, a hellscape of the damned it so evoked the hellion winds of a cosmic flare, the speed of frost and death that clung to skin of rust and joints of steel. It was in deference that Optimus cautioned himself, no provocative charge simmering in his Spark.

“I apologize if I was not meant to be here,” came the grumbling rasp and thunder of his voice.

His voice carries like the deep rolls of thunder, cool and with a summery wind. Optimus has lived through the universe over, untold tales etched into his mind like cave paintings, evolving and reforming as the eons wore on. A stone shone in metal, even rusted edges could gleam in the light of discovery, of the presence of those above and beyond the simplicity of bone and steel. Perhaps that was why fascination gripped the Autobot, With a low and steady presence did the massive mecha genuflect on a knee, careful not to loom heavily or with odious kinds of intimidation. 

“You...do not seem like those I have encountered before. One closer to the stars than I have ever seen. Who are you?”

“I understand if arranging this meeting was...difficult, Mr. Stark.”

Deep baritone spake from the depths of the Autobot leader, enormity dwarfing the Terran whom he regarded with old and sage eyes. Arms crossed on a barrel chest, the very air seemed laden with expectation and an electric tension. Earth had been strafed by many alien threats of late, his regarded with dubiousness and caution. Those around them watched closely, Optimus regarding only the Avenger whom bore his attention that day.

“I do not wish to place a strain. Already has Earth been afflicted with much, and we wish to help. For now, Earth is our home, too.”
