Fox Teaser Review
Nerdy Stuff First off, this is how I like my teasers to be delivered. I am and always have been the type who likes teasers that don’t give anything away about the film except for a tiny feel of it. Teasers with fast clips and shots of the entire movie are lame to me. I love movies and tv shows and web series- I do! So when I watch one I don’t want to feel like I saw everything already, that’s just me, though. The good thing about web series and their trailers and teasers is, they only show clips from the opening episode, the first one, and the rest is pretty much a secret which is why I think web series are becoming a new thing for TV shows to worry about. People like storytelling and they like surprises and they like thrills. With Netflix and Hulu, lots of web series are doing much better and are now being considered TV shows because now with the internet you can watch TV on your devices. So I like this teaser. It doesn’t show me what’s going to happen but tells me that I’m going to get some thrills and chills!
The Good I’m going to be honest and say that the idea, the plot- everything seems like a fun job for a director! It does! Reality and fantasy coming together, you can bring more of an artistic insight to the screen- that is what’s fun about fantasy and the fact that reality place a part in this just gives a director more ammo to mess with our heads- which one is real, which one is fake- I don’t know! And judging by the teaser, this looks more… how do you put it? It seems to have more integrity than the shows on the CW minus Arrow and Flash. It does! The simplicity, the mystery, the chills- it captured so many things on so many levels that this little piece of footage has already surpassed shows like Gossip Girl. And yes, I’ve watched Gossip Girl. A teaser for Fox vs. a teaser for Gossip Girl. I’m watching Fox because this seems interesting! It looks like a story is going to be told not drama that I could watch on E!.
There’s a peak in female characters today and that’s good! Women are finally becoming a target demographic for Hollywood and you have someone like Monroe Hayden playing the lead who is the exact opposite of a lame damsel in distress. The photos of her and that first clip we saw months ago, that has now been reshot, suggests she’s a bit of a badass! It’s a nice quality and a new quality for female leads to have without being in a super hero film or action thriller.
Something that is fantasy and different and romantic, this really is a turn for women in cinema because everyone who has been following the shows news or has read the Daisy series knows that it’s Monroe Hayden’s character [Fox] that replaces Prince Charming or in this case, a dark Prince Charming. She is the Edward Cullen and the Christian Grey of the story and I hope that she takes this job seriously, I really do! Because it can work and she can help change how Hollywood promotes women.
The Bad As much as I like the teaser, I am a bit worried that it’s not like the books. According to the show’s website, the series has a TV-14 rating and the creators noted that “sex scenes are not presented nor are any suggestions of sexual encounters.” I’m a little disappointed not because I’m a pervert but because it’s simply in the books! There’s a pretty detailed description of what Daisy and Fox do together butt naked in the forest. I do know that this is a prequel and Daisy isn’t in the show… yet, so there is a possibility that they’re waiting for Daisy to do sex scenes with. Now that I think about it, I don’t think fans want Fox to have sex with anyone else but Daisy but it’s a prequel and it could happen! And it’s Mina who is the opposite of Fox but from what I read in the books, I would like something that reflects it because I’m a fan of it. Hopefully there are some hot make- out sessions or something that would fill that void that the book offered.
And just in case the creators are reading this: Is it really a bad thing to have a nude Monroe Hayden in your show? Is it really going to lower ratings? Is it? I don’t think so! I’m pretty sure that both men and lesbians everywhere, even the women who question themselves, wouldn’t mind seeing Monroe Hayden naked in a sex scene. It could actually help some women with their identities! Just saying. Think about it!
A lot of people have read the books, obviously, that’s why this show is being made! If you have read the books or know someone who has, turn to them and ask, “Are they capturing what you imagined a prequel to be or are you scratching your head?”
Keeping Perspective There is nothing really scary or nightmarish about the books. This show is a prequel and is playing off the fears of a different character, either Mina or Fox or someone [who’s not Daisy]. So, I’m a bit worried but still very interested! It’s also teaser one, the other teasers could show some romance, the type that Daisy is known for. Also, the live action version is going to have to live up to what everyone else imagined in their heads from the books especially since the show is dialing it down for mainstream audiences with a TV rating of 14.
Studios aren’t sure if people are ready to watch two young women rub their naked bodies together and create Shakespeare’s ‘Beast with Two Backs’. I say, give the people a chance and show some lesbian action! Daisy did a fantastic job at not making the lesbian sex a big part of the story. They were just little blurbs, small moments- detailed moments- but they weren’t the entire story like 50 Shades of Grey. The book was about the romance and played it out beautifully without feeling like a lesbian story. Fox could’ve been a guy and the story would still be the same, maybe not as interesting because straight romances are typical but the feel of it would have been the same. And that was the point! When it’s about love, there is no gender, that was the secret message that Xavier Haven was trying to get across… I think.
Also, this isn’t Daisy it’s a different story focused on Fox. So of course the creators want to add something different that wasn’t in the books.
