In preparation for Pokemon legends ZA I’ve actually been trying to finish the scarlet/violet pokedex. I finally have all of the pokemon needed, I just need to grind out candies to evolve them. I can then finally buy the DLC that’s so widely acclaimed… several months after its release…

I actually made this art a day after the new characters were announced, and let me tell you- every time Pokemon makes new human designs they get even better. Lida was my personal favourite out of the trailer (she gives me major Tierno vibes, and I’ve seen some theories that they might be related, which I really hope is the case!), but I love all of them.

Also, mega dragonite was released which makes me so happy, because it means that there’s more new megas to potentially be shown (I personally have theorised that there will be a Aegislash mega based on a pair of scissors, as another character in the trailer has a doublade tie and it would fit their fashion designing theme). I know that some people don’t like the design, but it’s so goddamn goofy that I genuinely can’t bring myself to hate it. I like the fact that it’s clearly harkening back to its pre-evolutions and I think that the wings on its head are funny.

I’ve been sitting on these designs, but I’ve only now gotten around to making proper art for them… Introducing cowboy Piers, Gordie and Ryme! This is kind of a sequel to the cowboy Maxie post I made a while back, because admittedly I realised I really enjoy making cowboy designs. They’re just so silly and they’re really fun to come up with! So I might make some more in the future haha.

In this AU they’re meant to be a gang of thieves, who… uh… rob people. Ryme acts as the head honcho, planning out their attacks and striking with her mandibuzz when their opponents least expect, and Gordie and Piers act as her muscle to help out. Now of course “making” money is their main objective but they’re also rather interested in getting fame and glory as well!

I chose Mandibuzz to be Rymes partner because they’re both adorned with accessories, and because they both have strong bone design elements which I think work really well together. Ryme is a very forgotten about gym leader, so I wanted to make some artwork spotlighting her because she genuinely has such a good design (old lady representation let’s go) and I don’t think she’s talked about enough, especially compared to the other Paldea gymleaders. My favourite part of her design is the fact they fashioned her dreads to look like atomically accurate bones, and her glittery dress. It reminds me a lot of Cofagrigus and Pharoahs.

Next up we have Gordie, I chose Cubone to be his partner due to the fact they both have parental issues and due to cubone’s rock typing. I always imagined Gordie would use a Cubone when dealing with weaker opponents in his gym to give them a chance of winning, and to also train it. Also, the main reason he’s part of this trio is due to the fact he seems to enjoy fancy expensive jewels and necklaces (as seen by the studs on his shoes and jacket, and his giant medallion). I think that he and Ryme would get on well because of this and also because her sister used to be a rock type gymleader and I think that they would talk about that a lot.

And finally we have Piers. I chose Cacturne to be his partner since they’re both spiky and because I think Cacturne really fits the punk aesthetic. He’s part of this group due to his similarities to Ryme in the fact they’re both musicians, and because like Gordie he is from Galar. He was the first one I designed of this group and honestly he’s probably my favourite out of the three. Unlike Gordie and Ryme, he just wants money to help his hometown.

I while ago I drew Gordie wearing the rock type dress from the Pokemon x Miku collab and recently I decided to redraw it as well as making an alternate “sync pair” version. I had also made a comic to go alongside the drawing, but decided to scrap it. I’ll still include some of the panels I think are funny below though. 

Also if you’ve seen my Gordie ice type design, one of the images contains an even older version of that design than the old one I posted alongside the new one. Fun!

Ice type Gordie design

This is Gordie as an Ice type trainer, since that was the kind of pokemon he used before he switched to using rock type pokemon. Not gonna lie, if they were to ever remake sword and shield I think it would be cool if you could get an old league card showing him before he became a rock type trainer, just like how Piers has one of himself when he was younger. Perhaps Melony gives it to you as a bit of blackmail, who knows… Their shared backstory is really interesting to me, it actually kills me that they don’t explore it more the games. (Same goes for the other characters really).

I’ve always thought that all colours were as equally as good as one another, but orange has really been speaking to me lately. Orange is underrated and deserves more love. (A bit like Gordie, perhaps that why they’re so well suited together).

Also including this older design of him. In this version I removed his yellow hair streaks (some think they’re genetic but I prefer to think that he purposefully dyed his hair that way as a sign of rebellion before abandoning ice types fully), and tried to add the blue streaks Melony has in her hair to make them look more similar. However I think it removes some of his recognisability, so in the new version I decided to re-add them and change a few other small details as well.

This is Sygna suit Gordie and Togedemaru! I thought these two would be a cute combo to put together because they look similar and have similar colour schemes! I’ve also noticed that fans who aren’t familiar with the sword and shield game frequently mistake Gordie for an electric type trainer, so I thought it would be funny to give him one. I imagine he wears this when he doesn’t want to get noticed in public.

Normal/Flying

This boisterous Pokemon has a habit of finding the tallest place possible and then releasing its birdsong (much to the dismay of anything with ears). Underneath its smug exterior though it is an afraid little bird that suffers under its own expectations. This Pokemon can often be found with Noemals.

Ultranerdly

Electric/Fighting

Somehow even more self absorbed than before, Ultranerdly prides itself on being cool and powerful. It is incredibly loyal to its own detriment but under pressure it’s more than willing to change its tune.

Noelmal

Normal/Ice

This Pokemon is shy and is quite anxious around others. It’s also absolutely terrified of Tandemaus. Despite this it is a very caring and kind Pokemon and it enjoys helping its trainer. Its saintly patience allows it to be good freinds with Nerdlys.

Noeerie

Ice

This once kind Pokemon is now completely emotionless. It will do anything in pursuit of getting stronger and never questions its trainer. Even against those it once considered friends, it doesn’t recognise their faces and whips up fierce blizzards to attack them with.

Bruisie

Dark

A temperamental Pokemon which struggles with getting along with others. When no one is looking, it likes to snack on chalk.

After spending a lot of time with its trainer this Pokemon can become a good ally. It’s powerful punches are really a force to be reckoned with.

Rasliel

Grass/Dark

This Pokemon lives in the dark and likes to disguise itself as a tree to avoid predators. When safe it’ll remove its disguise and heal any wounds it may have.

Klara and Nihilego sync suit design

After arriving to Pasio, Klara decides to film a music video at the beach to promote her brand… and the island too, I guess. However, whilst filming she encounters something truly out of the ordinary, a Nihilego! After befriending the beast she’s sure that it’ll help her rise to stardom, let’s hope it works out!
