People think it’s alright that KM’s Black and White performance for Festa’18 got cut because ‘BH probably wasn’t aware’ and ‘you’ll find their fancam videos on YT anyway’, but it’s not.
First of all, this is a copyright infringement issue. Which BH would know about because they are a music company. It’s literally part of their job description, to be aware of potential legal issues that would arise from using other artists’ works. It’s not even fine print, it’s literally part of their ‘terms and conditions’. So no, BH didn’t just make a small little mistake here, this was poor management and lack of proper planning which is NOT acceptable. No excuses.
Second, there were other ways they could have thwarted this issue.
Muting the song in the video
Uploading KM’s part as a BB on their channel and de-monetizing it
Superimpose the song with another one of their own tracks
Using a cover of the original song for the performance instead
Having KM themselves cover MJ’s song, and then dance to it
There were so many options yet they chose to delete the entire performance knowing fully well that they’re doing injustice to their two star members and also to the fans who pay to see their content. Nice. Very professional.
Third, low quality fancam videos won’t cut it. The official content is uploaded on Channel+/Vlive plus and fans are required to pay for the content. Now they’ll get an incomplete product because KM’s performance is completely removed, so in essence, BH sort of scammed the fans here. As in, they did not deliver the promised content. Fans who paid for the whole content will now have to resort to watching re-uploaded or fancam videos on other sites instead. Another act of high degree un-professionalism; fans should not have to supply the content for themselves, that’s the company’s job. Especially if it’s a paid content.
Fourth, and this is hilarious really because most videos of KM’s performance on YT/dailymotion etc are now being blocked by BH on, guess what, copyright grounds. You’d think that a company that goes around blocking and taking down videos that are part of THEIR product, claiming copyright on THEIR content would know that they can be subjected to the same claim if they use OTHER artists’ contents. The fact that BH did this invalidates the whole ‘But BH probably did not know about the copyright issues’ argument.
Fifth, let’s consider for a moment that this was a genuine mishap on BH’s part. If so, then why cut the KM skit too? That was not part of the dance, no MJ song was used in the background. The skit was ‘clean’ so to speak. One can argue and say it was part of the whole performance so they removed it as well, but honestly, it wasn’t. The reason KM’s performance was removed was solely because of the song, the skit had no correlation to it OR the dance so there was no reason to remove the WHOLE thing.
Lastly, the sheer injustice of it all. I saw people bringing ships into this and to them I just want to say, take a hike please. This is about Jimin and Jungkook’s hard work that was completely lifted off from the final monetized product, intended to be sold to the fans, all because BH didn’t do the one job they were supposed to do. It’s not a small deal as most people think, this is obstruction of an artist’s professional work. Suppose this happened to the rapline, or to Taejin’s song people would be up in arms and accusing BH of every wrong thing under the sun. But for KM it’s alright? It’s ok because ‘you can watch them on other channels anyway’? it’s this exact mentality fans have that is letting BH get away with their rather blatant unprofessionalism.
You don’t baby a company for NOT doing their job correctly. You don’t pat them on the head and say ‘it’s alright~ mistakes happen~’ etc. You don’t reward someone for slacking off on their job. That’s exactly what happened here. BH did not double check, they did not think of alternate solutions lest this situation should arise. They did not do their goddamn job. Just because it did not happen to your fave/bias/ship/whatever does not mean you get to turn a blind eye and claim that the ones who question BH are in the wrong.
I’m afraid that this situation is only going to get worse from now on. And sadly, Jimin and Jungkook seemed to have become the primary targets for whatever reason. Similar things happened with Serendipity (lack of proper promotions) and Euphoria (lack of an official song release). Not to mention the whole mess with the MVs (incorrect tagging, re-uploading the videos and losing views etc). BH went around blocking videos of KM’s B&W performance so diligently today that I must ask, where was this energy when their own MV’s were wrongly tagged? There’s so much shadiness going on with the company and the way they treat the group/certain members of the group now, that I’m convinced most are only remaining blind to them by choice.
People raged and raved about Singularity being left out of the LY:Tear playlist on Youtube. They dragged Jimin out for accidentally leaving out his friend’s name (to which he apologized, mind you), accused him of using said friend’s pet dog for clout. That is apparently a grade A crime, but KM’s performance being cut out of official content/merchandise isn’t a ‘big deal’. There was such an uproar when Jin got cut out of BB magazine, why? Because it’s official public content, and such content should represent the whole group. So is Festa. Even if the content is for the fans, it’s monetized and thus official.
BH needs to deliver the product in its entirety or provide appropriate compensation for it. That’s a fact. And that applies to all seven members of BTS.
It’s high time this fandom accepted that BH is not BTS (and vice versa) and ask themselves: Who do you stan, the company or the group?
