Nova Larkin is really a sweet soul once you get to know her. Getting to know her could be hard. Nova rarely lets people into her personal life, or even sometimes her non personal life. When she was one her mother died from cancer. She has two older brothers who she is very close to and a father who was always less than fatherly. Unfortunately she wasn’t really what he wanted, he had wanted four strong boys and ended up with two and then herself, after her mother passed her father didn’t have the option to have more boys, so Nova got the brunt of that anger. For years it was always her fault, he even blamed her mothers death on her like she was able to create cancer and gave it to her mother. When she was old enough, which was not soon enough, she moved to New York, Brooklyn to be exact. She was drawn to it and has always loved New York The only regret of moving she had was that she didn’t tell her brothers where she was going. They were always there for her and on multiple occasions saved her from a worse fate than what she ended up enduring. Currently she works at one of her close friend’s, Maya’s, bakery.
“Hey.” Silas spoke, noticing the girl he had met at the event at the Tavern, sitting at the bar. “Nova, right?” He put the towel on his shoulder as he stood behind the bar, he was here all day. “How’re you?”
“Yeah” she smiled “That’s me, kind of easy to forget but not a name you forget” she joked a little “I’m good, there’s obviously been a lot going on, you?” she asked raising a brow slightly.
“what do you suggest getting for someone when you have absolutely no idea what they like?” hana asked, looking over all the treats in the display case of the bakery before glancing back up toward nova. “my boss has been in a funk as of low, and i wanted to surprise her with something, even though i know she’s going to moan and groan about it,” she teased. // @fragileasabird
“One of everything” she joked. “But honestly the chocolate mint cupcakes really are a great pick me up” she said with a soft smile. “And it would be good to get for yourself too” she smirked. “I’m sorry she’s been in a funk though, that’s never fun”
She immediately goes to fix her hair. “Shit, is it frizzy? What’s wrong with it?” Yu-Jun asks as she pulls out a mirror only to see that her hair looks fine. “You can ask your question.”
“No no!” she said quickly “It’s really nice, mine’s frizzy actually and I was wondering, how do you get it like that?”: she asked instantly blushing. She was sure it was a stupid question.
She let out a small sigh, relieved that Nova had been able to make it home safe. She was so worried after what had happened and still kept feeling like it wasn’t safe in the city. “I’m glad you got home safe. I think when we’re open till late there should be at least two people here to close up. I don’t like the thought of anyone working alone so late.” She was even beginning to reconsider the opening hours of the bakery altogether. “So Felix?” She asked, not knowing who that was but she was curious.
“Oh just a friend from high school. I see him around every so often” she shrugged. It wasn’t a big deal or anything. “So uh I wanted to let you know something. After the party, the news I got, it wasn’t the best news” she said quietly thinking of how to tell one of her closest friends that she was pretty much homeless now.
“ I FEEL LIKE THAT’LL happen when you’re just surrounding by such delicious pastries , ” theo chuckles , fondly shaking their head . “ oh that’s a fun little surprise ! ” her index finger taps against her chin , deciding if she should get some more . but it’s likely that the day staff at alchemy lab would not be able to finish it . “ i feel like you guys might get this question a lot , but do you do coffee drinks too ? ”
“Yeah, for sure” she giggled. “I’m Nova, by the way. I think i’ve seen you around” she smiled as she handed over the box of cupcakes. “We do! What were you thinking of?” she asked passing a menu over to the other.
Nova looked at the bag in her hands and sighed. Great. Not only did the worst thing happen that she didn’t even fully understand (she went to a party and now that person was found murdered, odd coincidence? Why did everyone know this person too, she only spoke to them like once maybe) and now she was out of a home. She had a job, so she could technically afford someplace but everyplace she tried the rent was way too high. She hadn’t told Maya yet, she was too nervous too. Of course the first person who would find out was Felix. She had to tell him. He’d make it all better, he always did. Of course the green eyed girl may have been fooling herself with her feelings for him. But she knew, as she was told, no one would ever feel like that for her so why bother. She paced back and fourth outside of his house. She’d never actually been inside his house, there was always a reason she couldn’t go in. She continued to pace as she went to text him. @felixwinterdoesntcare
EYES CONTINUE TO TAKE in the selection of pastries . “ honestly , i don’t know how you’re able to resist the temptation of snagging one for yourself , ” theo half jokes . her index finger taps against her lips as she continues to decide . “ y’know what i’ll take two of the french vanilla and buttercream cupcakes , two red velvet , and are those cupcakes salted caramel ? ” she points to the white frosted cupcakes with caramel drizzled down the frosting .
“Oh, I’m definitley not able to, I’ve gained so much weight since working here, but it’s so worth it” she giggled a little. She nodded starting to get the box ready and the cupcakes that were picked. “Yes, and there’s a bit of caramel inside too!” she said with a smile. “Great choices” she added.
After the crazy events over the holidays Maya was glad to be back at work and back to what felt like normality. They were getting ready to open the bakery later that day and stood in back kitchen preparing cakes ready for what customers might come wondering in to the store. "What happened to you at the party the other night? I couldn’t find you after I went out for air.“
Nova was just happy that they were reopening the bakery. The last few weeks had been really odd. She had met a lot of people at that party and some she actually really didn’t mind speaking to. Not that she ever minded speaking to people, she usually just got really nervous. “Oh, I had cut up my heel and then my friend Felix and I went outside and I uh got some news and went home.” she said with a small shrug.
Seeing a familar face at the event she approached Nova. “How are you tonight? You look amazing.” Leilana gave a smile as she looked over her outfit. “Where did you get your outfit”
“Oh thank you, I wasn’t sure it was exactly the right outfit for the occasion, to be honest i’m not used to being invited to these sort of things” she said with a small smile “You look really nice too!” she added “Oh there’s a boutique by my apartment, I found it like the first week I moved here but never had the chance to wear it” she explained.
Silas leaned up against the wall, noticing a woman also doing the same. He just needed a breather for a couple minutes. Turning his head to her to make conversation he spoke. “Taking a break too?”
She realized someone was actually speaking to her and turned to look at him “Yeah it’s just.. a lot going on” she said with a short giggle. “Don’t get me wrong this is a great party!” she added quickly.
Maya gave her a reassuring smile “You look great, Nova” she said before picking up one of the colourful shots. She raised her glass to her friend to toast “Happy New Year”
“Oh thank you. You do too!” she smiled and nodded “Happy New Year, here’s to a healthy year and uh new friends and opportunities?” she shrugged a little. That seemed like the right thing to want.
Smiling as he noticed Nova was unsteady in her heels, Felix couldn’t help feeling vaguely comforted by the fact that she was equally as uncomfortable in formalwear. Linking arms with his friend, he carefully made his way through the crowd, guiding her so that they could avoid the people he knew to be questionable members of his world. Taking her instead towards the entrance of the building, past a handful of people he longed to introduce her to. He knew the steps leading up to the entryway had a beautiful view of the street. It was still decorated for Christmas, and if he needed to mutter a quiet spell to keep them both warm, where was the harm? “It’s only for an evening, it’ll be okay. I’d offer to trade shoes but I don’t know how well that would go down with the squares inside…”
She giggled, he was right about that. Sure, she didn’t know most of the people around them but just from the looks, and looks of course could be deceiving, they did not seem like the type of people who would approve of that. “Do you know what time it is by the way?” she asked. She wasn’t expecting anything, she hadn’t heard from her brothers in a very long time so she didn’t really expect them to text her a happy New Years or anything, but she was curious, she felt like she’d been at this party forever. “Oh wow it’s beautiful out here” she said looking around at the lights.
Lightly hitting Nova’s arm, Felix laughed. “More style than me? Is that what you’re saying?” He asked. “Stop it,” he whined, his eyes shining. “If I have to start wearing suits every day, you have to start wearing this every day.” He tugged gently at the material of her dress. “Yeah, yeah… I’m happy you’re here too.” He longed to take Nova’s hand and show her around, introduce her to everybody in the party from the supernatural world, from his world. He knew far too many people who would be willing to embrace her like family. Maybe then she wouldn’t feel so alone, maybe then she wouldn’t feel the need to hide in quiet corners. But he couldn’t. It wasn’t an option. And part of him was genuinely worried she might see him differently after such a revelation. “Come on.” He got to his feet, careful not to jostle her before holding out a hand to help her up. “Want to escape the chaos for a while?”
“Oh no, no deal” she laughed. That wasnot happening. She alway felt like he wanted to say something, but he never did. She just assumed it was something about her family or her past, he was really the only one who knew how awful her father truly was to her. “Yes please” she stood up wobbling slightly in the heels she was wearing. Clearly she was not a dress up kind of girl. she was ok with just jeans a tee shirt but the heels were cutting her ankle a little. “I wanna get these shoes off, I knew I should have worn flats” she joked taking his hand.
