I think one of the most important things Iâve learned this year is about love.
1. You canât always control who you love. Sometimes, youâre going to love someone even though they donât love you back. The worst part about that is even though you donât want to love that person, you still do, and nothing can stop that. The best part, though, is getting to figure out who loves you back.
2. At other times, youâre going to choose to love someone. This is the true kind of love, the kind that matters. Thereâs going to be days where youâre going to have to look at their present self and not their past, and youâre going to have to choose to love them, even with their past. Those are the days when you could walk away at any time you choose to, but instead, you decide to stay and love that person. Because love isnât supposed to be something that you canât control, though it can be. Love is supposed to be a choice, an action. If youâre loving without a reason, at any given point, you can stop loving that person.
3. There will be times when love seems like a cruel thing. After a heartbreak. When a family splits up. While someone you love is in pain and you canât help them. All of that hurts, and youâre thinking, âIf only I didnât love them, I wouldnât be so hurt.â Well, one thing you learn is that love is worth it. For every pain and sacrifice, there will be two moments on joy to make up for it. It may not happen right now, but believe me. Love is worth everything.
4. The last thing I learned is that the first step to knowing how to love anyone is loving yourself. Not a conceited, arrogant love. That isnât how youâd love someone else. You love yourself by accepting that you make mistakes, that youâre not perfect. and by forgiving yourself. You accept your flaws, but by doing that, you accept your strengths. When you can love yourself, you can surely love someone else. Itâs the hardest thing to do sometimes, but then again, itâs worth it.
