5 Helpful Free French Apps/Websites
Hey guys! I know I haven’t posted in what feels like a century, but I was super busy with school. I wasn’t paying as much attention to my French studies as I should have been. But now that summer is finally here and I’ve moved, I’m ready to begin again! My French professor was nice enough to loan me a good bit of books over the summer, but I know some people don’t have access to these type of things like I didn’t for a long time so I compiled a list of my favorite free French learning apps/websites.
1. Duolingo: https://www.duolingo.com/
I think this one is quite obvious and if you haven’t heard of this app, then you might actually live under a rock. But I included this because it’s so great for beginners and I use it every day. It really helps with pronunciation and vocabulary. I found that the desktop version of duolingo is quite different from the mobile version. The mobile version, there is a system of hearts where for each answer you get incorrect you lose one which can get annoying but its quite easier to win them back by practicing or watching a video.
I would suggest using the desktop version because there is heart system and it offers more content such as the story mode!
2. Learn with Oliver: https://www.learnwitholiver.com/
I just found this app last night and I have been addicted ever since! It offers practice with words, sentences, and pronunciation. My descriptions can’t even describe how good this website is, for it to be free! Entirely free! I haven’t used it long so I’m not much aware of its features, but I fell in love with the option of being able to put in how long you want to take to be fluent in the language and they tell you how many hours you need to put in per day or you can even put in a custom time! For example, I set mine to be fluent in 1.5 years and I need to practice two hours a day in order to achieve my goal. Out of all the apps/websites on the list, this one is the one I’d suggest the most!
3. Conjuguemos: https://conjuguemos.com/
This is the website you want to use if you need help improving your grammar, but they also offer vocabulary. What I do is I use duolingo and Learn with Oliver to help my vocabulary then use conjuguemos to improve my grammar. Also, they have vocabulary from textbooks. If you’re learning French like me, I suggest learning vocab from the Bien Dit! books. They have pretty good vocab.
This is a simple app that allows you to practice certain categories of vocab for 5 minutes per day. But sometimes if you continue a weekly streak, they give you a bonus 5 minutes at the end of the week which gives you 10 minutes to study a day. However, you do have to pay to unlock the FULL vocab and unlimited time, but 5 mins a day isn’t much but I think it helps with hearing the language and getting familiar.
5. Bonjour de France: http://www.bonjourdefrance.co.uk/learn-french-online/grammar/choose-level
This one I haven’t used yet but I have heard only good reviews. This helps all levels rather you’re a beginner or more advanced. I will be using this one soon, but I’m focusing more on Learn with Oliver. However, I do suggest it!
