task 005: the season thus far
Timeline
Non-exhaustive, just a flyover view!
1798:
May
Frances arrives in London with a mild case of self-importance accompanied by her parents, the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch, and her younger sister, Lady Frederica Fitzroy.
Her name quickly becomes a curse on the tongues of Mamas and debutantes, embittered by their ill-fated debut next to the Season’s shiniest piece.
May-July:
Frances is at her best– glittering, charming, popular and hungry for more no matter the cost (the cost, more often than not, was a well-crafted lie at another debutante’s expense).
July:
Frederica is assaulted and falls pregnant. The Fitzroys abruptly leave London before anyone catches on to what has transpired. The ton is left wondering what happened to the Season’s “diamond of the first water”.
1799:
March:
Frederica dies in childbirth. Her child does not survive. Her death is kept a secret.
June:
Frances quietly returns to London with her aunt and uncle. She is late to the Season. She excuses her absence by claiming her sister has been ill.
Frances and Victoria have an unpleasant reunion at Vauxhall, reigniting their rivalry.
Frances and Jeremiah first meet. Jeremiah doesn’t leave an especially positive impression, but their meeting sticks with Frances all the same.
Lord Fletcher and Frances begin courting.
July:
Frances discovers that Lucy and Prince Sebastian have secretly been courting.
Frances and Archibald Howard St. John attend the Queen’s Luncheon together. While they aren’t a couple, the Queen gives them her blessing.
Frances confronts Lucy about her (previously) secret relationship with Sebastian, fracturing their friendship.
Jeremiah and Frances meet for the third time at Lord Fletcher’s estate. Jeremiah expresses an interest in Frances. She has similar feelings but is resistant. Their relationship becomes more complicated.
Frances learns that Lucy and her aunt (Lady Gow) are already aware of Frederica’s pregnancy.
August:
Frances adopts a version of Frederica’s story as her own truth and, with Archie’s assistance, has Whistledown print it before Lady Gow or Lucy can spread the story and damage Frederica’s reputation
Lord Fletcher and Jeremiah get into a fist fight.
Frances returns to Scotland disgraced.
News of Frederica’s passing is published publicly in the newspaper .
Connections
Archibald Howard St. John - A Friend:
First meeting: Though they originally met as children (and left unfavorable impressions), they first met as adults at Vauxhall when Archie entreated her for assistance in a game of darts.
Last Meeting: At Cliveden, when Frances requested Archie’s help in spreading a rumor about herself that she purports to be the truth. They are now pen pals.
Aster Hesse - A Curiosity:
First & Last Meeting: In a sideroom during the Queen’s Luncheon at Almack’s. Frances was jealous, Aster was Aster. They are now pen pals.
Jeremiah Ackerley - A Temptation:
First Meeting: By a rosebush at Vauxhall. Jeremiah helped Frances find the ferry so she could get home.
Then: At the Fitzroy’s London home after Frances’s devastating rumor was published by Whistledown. Jeremiah punched Frances’s suitor, Lord Fletcher. Frances and Jeremiah are now pen pals.
Lucy Needham - A Betrayal:
First Meeting: Lucy and Frances were friends in childhood and wrote each other often. Their first meeting of the Season was at Vauxhall where they discussed their romantic prospects. Frances confided that she intended to pursue Prince Sebastian. Lucy omitted that she and Prince Sebastian were already involved.
Last Meeting: At Lucy’s London Home. Frances informed Lucy that Sebastian had been shot in an attempt to persuade her to go see him. They are still not on amicable terms.
Sebastian Herzog - A Failed Suitor:
First Meeting: They bumped into each other at the Ascot. Frances tried (unsuccessfully) to ingratiate herself with him.
Last Meeting: At Cliveden, when they were both miserable. Frances agreed to persuade Lucy to give Sebastian a second chance if he directed Queen Charlotte’s attentions to Jeremiah so that he would receive a title.
Victoria Hale - A Rival:
First Meeting: Though they originally met during Frances’s first season (during which Frances was inclined to gossip about Victoria) their first meeting during S1 was at Vauxhall, where Frances broadcasted her intentions to court Prince Sebastian and Victoria disclosed she had received a proposal.
