ryland grace and the world he saved
my mom just came to me and ranted about how everyone is making this facebook status that says, “raising teenagers is like nailing jello to a tree”. she was so baffled by this because she said, “you were pretty easy to raise as teenagers. all you did was sleep and eat.”
so to prove some point she’s going to nail a small cup of jello to a tree.
she’s so pleased with her self
incredible
parents are weird
yeah but this is about as accurate as it gets.
you say “nail jello to a tree” and most people think jello all by itself.
but if you put any actual thought into what you’re doing and then give it just a little support
well gosh. look what happens.
please tell your mom good job.
also love how the original metaphor of “nailing jello to a tree” is about trying to force your bizarre and arbitrary will on something that is categorically disinclined to do such a thing, for no conceivable reason.
I just keep thinking about how Ryland Grace used to be a regular at his local diner.
my honest opinion
stop looking so cutieful youve got assignments to finish grading
stratt, 1 hour before going on the run
guys you gotta understand. eva and grace are like very emotionally attached and love each other very much and are attached at the hip to the point that its weirder that its 100% platonic. its not even friends with benefits, there's no romance, no sex, just two mentally unstable people tasked with saving the world
edit: this is a proud aroace stratt and grace propaganda post, this is about their emotionally codependent queer platonicness
I know there's a popular headcanon that Grace's crew died because of feeding tubes malfunction (based on the paperwork Grace was doing right before the explosion), but — in the book he specifically says that even after the accident he kept dealing with that same paperwork on minor Hail Mary issues, so I doubt that feeding tube problem was left unaddressed. May I offer instead:
Grace was put into coma by the people who cared about him. They (especially Yáo being Yáo) probably double-triple-quadruple checked everything. They watched him sleep for those first few days — I doubt they went into coma immediately after leaving Earth's orbit. They probably talked to him, assuring him that he'll be okay.
Ilyukhina's coma procedure was probably supervised by Yáo. He made sure that everything was in order, but — he is just one man and he is not a doctor. There was much more room for mistakes.
When Yáo went to sleep, he was alone. He had to rely on the technology completely.
We know that he died first.
how else was he supposed to drink it?
The thing about Project Hail Mary that I think has made it linger, at the very least, in my consciousness, is that while it has a happy ending, it's fundamentally a tragedy
Grace ends up in a place he likes at the end of the story, he's happy, he's safe, he loves the people around him, and it's an obviously better ending than he initially expected to get when he woke up on the Hail Mary, but that doesn't erase everything he lost
It doesn't change that he had a life stolen from him, that he was, in a very real way, murdered when Stratt put him on the Hail Mary
I cannot remember who said it, but they were on the money when they said Ryland died on earth and Grace was born on the Hail Mary
And there's something about a well written tragedy that just holds me captive in a way very few things can
When Grace got launched into space, he was never truly gone from Earth. A piece of him still remains in the hearts of his students, the scientists he worked with....
And his appendix that Stratt keeps in a jar in her office instead of a family photo.
is this anything
I can see where the "eternally kind and patient Grace" interpretation is coming from, but it's so funny when you open the book and literally the first thing he thinks is "something is talking to me and it's ANNOYING".
...and then proceeds to spend the whole chapter being grumpy about gravity, of all things.
Like. At the very least, my guy is not a morning person. And that's not even mentioning the "staggering waste of carbon" of it all. He can be patient, sure, he's a teacher, but he's still human? Let him be human.
up next, the triangle.
we know what hole that goes in, right?
that's right, the square hole!
There are no ducks in this post.
