summary: after messing up yet another potions class, you decide to ask your childhood crush, who happens to be hermione granger, for help.
a/n: a small fanfiction sitting in my gdocs for ages! enjoy :)
You stare at the date scratched in chalk on Snapeās board, only able to comprehend it after idly scribbling in the Potions book you borrowed from another Gryffindor. Crossing your fingers Snape was going to fall in a pit of snakes, you gathered your things and hurried off, before you heard a brooding voice. āYour lacewing flies are lying on your desk, Y/L/N.ā
āGo on,ā you mutter to your friends. They looked at you for a fraction of a second, pitying you.
āHeāll hound youāā
āThat batās going to call you outāā
āLeave it to me,ā you reply with a firm gaze, yanking away your friendās hand and walking toward your ill fate. Your eyes move momentarily toward the desk you left, immaculately clean and empty.
āIt is amusing how you have forgotten to turn in your essay on the benefits of Abraxan hair, Y/L/N.ā Snapeās eyes bore into you with carelessness. You almost walk off with disgust. āAnd of course, the potion flask you had turned in the last week had turned rotten immediately, the result of an Illusion Spell. A paltry trick. Professors at Hogwarts cannot be so easily deceived.ā
You left the room, buzzing with anger. Snape had docked not just points from Gryffindor but Ravenclaw too, because of trading a bag of Hogsmeade sweets for an essay you asked someone to do. Then you had two months of detention, beginning tonight. It was only homework, after all, tons of essays that could easily be done by Hermione Granger. Hermione Granger.Ā
You stumble over a step on the moving staircase, hugging your book bag tight. The smartest girl in Gryffindor House. You heard rumors of her taking every subject in the third year, which was impossible. She wasn't just intelligent, too, but incredibly brave and pretty. She went against the Dark Lord in her first year, alongside Harry Potter, and was a survivor of the petrification cases in second year. Raised by Muggles! It was a surprise she wasn't in Ravenclaw. Clearly, she was the answer to your problems. Lost in a dream, you mumble the common room password happily, and thankfully the portrait swung open, letting you in.
It was a raucous mess inside. Fred and George had fiddled with something again, causing an explosion to appear across the ceiling, spelling out vulgar swears. Chuckling to yourself, you spot an orange blur racing toward the girlsā dormitory. Crookshanks, Hermioneās cat. You stopped. You werenāt even that close with Hermione. Your little crush kept you avoiding her. You only talked with her when she turned up in the library, which is to say every day, from early dawn to before it closes. Don't regret this, you forced yourself to push open the door and find the dormitory half-empty, except for Y/B/F/N settled on one of the four-posters, and unfortunately, Hermione, just about to leave. Y/B/F/Nās head turns toward you with a knowing look as you stood in the doorway. āI have to go clean my, um, book,ā they said vaguely and jumped up from their place, giving you an encouraging wink before they left.
Silence. Complete silence. You cough, attempting to be the first speaker. āWell. Um, hello.ā
Hermione responds immediately, adjusting something on her robe. Her bushy hair was pinned back in a plait. You couldn't help but admire it. āY/N. I was just about to leave. Mind if youād help me stack these properly?ā
āOh. Right. Yes.ā You walk over, heart throttling in your chest. āIn what order?ā
Hermione fumbles for her schedule, looking around for her wand. You think hard and pull out your wand, giving it a swish and flick. āWingardium Leviosa!āĀ
Hermioneās schedule floats out of her bag, and you hold up your wand, keeping it suspended. One of the only spells you hadn't botched. āThanks,ā Hermione said gratefully, piling her books in an orderly manner. āIāll help,ā you insisted, gripping onto your wand with your left and struggling to reach Hermioneās books with the other.
āOh no, itās all rightāā
āAncient Runes,ā you observed, making conversation, noting Hermioneās list. āIāve heardā I mean, how on earth did you take all of these? Not that itās bad,ā you added, hoping Hermione wouldn't hate you.
āYou're only dreaming,ā Hermione suddenly grabbed her schedule herself, eyes roaming over it before stuffing it in her bag. āOrganization doesn't matter. But, oh, Iāve spent so long on theseāā she fretted over her books, now scattered on her bed.
āTell you what,ā you said hesitatingly. āI know we're not friends, butā¦I could use a little help on homework myself. We could, uhā ā you choked on your words ā āstudy in the library together?ā
Hermione pauses. āNobody's asked to join me studying before.ā A trace of a smile appeared on her face. āBut Iāve got so much to doā¦ā She trailed off, staring at her books. Then she quickly gathered them and pushed them all into her bag. You anxiously watched her for a replyā
āSee you at break, then!ā she called, swinging her bag over her shoulder, looking deeply troubled, and ran off toward the door.
The entire day you couldn't get her off your mind. A minute spent with Hermione Granger is already a golden moment for you. During Transfiguration, you were waiting desperately for Professor McGonagall to end the class, brushing off your other friends with a jerk of your head toward Hermione, and they let you go after her, practically glowing with excitement. āHi,ā you chirruped. āStudy? Library?ā
She startled at your persistence, and gave you a mere glance. Your smile nearly fades. āOf course, but Iāve only got a bit of my time,ā she complied.Ā
Going to the library, you weren't quiet, eagerly getting to know Hermione. She listened patiently, smiling at your eagerness and answering with pride. But when you arrived at the library, you were forced to be silent, and settled with choosing the right spot for studying. Seems like Hermione was a perfectionist, judging even the lighting and positioning of a table. The two of you sat at the middle end, a window pouring sunlight just enough to read. āPotions, is it?ā Hermione asked, immediately at business. She brought out your Potions textbook, catching a title that appeared flying behind her and setting it down too. āWell, you must learn the basic rules and fundamentals firstā¦.ā
Vague words drifted into your mind, absorbing some of the information she was telling you. You tried your best to focus, but she was getting more attractive by the minute. āSo I forgot to put, uh, fly juice in my potion, which is why it melted,ā you stared at the explanation cleanly written on your textbook, blotted out by drawings of Quidditch hoops.
Hermione nodded, looking amused and exasperated at the same time. She probably dealt with her friends the same way. āNaturally, Grymworth Hucklespell had proposed a theoryā Oh! Itās nearly time!ā she gasped, getting to her feet.
āCould we study more?ā you ask. āA few minutes wouldnāt hurt.ā
Hermioneās eyebrows crease slightly. āWeāll be late.ā
āMadam Pomfreyās not going to kick us out,ā you insist. āI need this essay. Please? Iāll give you five sickles.ā
āMoney?ā laughs Hermione, though she was already adjusting her bag. āIām not to be bribed, Y/N.ā
Your heart jumps at the mention of your name. āDonāt lie to me, Hermione.ā You try to appear calm and collected though you were feeling the exact opposite. āYouāre the last one to leave the library after curfewās announced.ā
Hermioneās cheeks flush. You think it looks cute and hastily shift your gaze to the shelf behind her. āSo. If you donāt want to then, Iāll just stay here and deal with Snapeās severe punishments myselfā¦ā You flip open your textbook and examine the pages, waiting with foolish hope.
āHow do you know me so well?ā
The question caught you off guard. It was your turn to flush, feeling Hermioneās sudden, intense gaze upon you. āWhat exactly do you mean?ā
āI was asking a question. Not for you to answer with another.ā Yet Hermione sighed. āHardly anyone pays attention. Itās not like Iām seeking it, but itās odd that I dread heading back to the common room. Of course Ron and Harry are my friends, but theyāre boys and they donāt really understand at all ā oh, I shouldnāt.ā She abruptly cuts herself off as you stand, now meeting her hesitant stare. Almost curious.Ā
You pray to the stars that you wonāt botch this. āHermione, youāre loved. Thereās millions of people who do love you and itās crazy that youāve never noticed, because youāre so intelligent and incredible, itās disturbing that youāre not valued more and Iām not saying itās just teachers who notice but maybe thereās someone in front of you who values you a whole bloody lot.ā
A pause, a breath. Hermione doesnāt stir, even as the bell rings to announce the end of break. You shuffle your feet, feeling your ears go red and seized the cancerous textbook off the table.
āI suppose Iām glad to return the favor, Y/N.ā
