THE 1975 DECEMBER 5, 2014 VS. DECEMBER 4, 2015 (my pictures)
See this picture?
Look at it.
No, really look at it.
Note every single hint of internalized misogyny in this one shitty, deviant-art-worthy piece of…
Just look.
When I was teenager, isolated from other girls through homeschooling and a controlling mother, my mother posted this to my FaceBook wall. The caption she added was one of pride and joy. I was her special snowflake.
My mother raised me with that mentality.
“Don’t be like other girls.”
“Don’t be friends with girls, they’re catty bitches.”
“Boys are so much less dramatic.”
These were things that I took for granted growing up. I was a kid, and my mother knew about this kind of stuff, right?
So I grew up with a heavy sense of internalized misogyny. Women, in my eyes, were vapid, shallow, stupid, bitches and/or whores.
I was special. Why? Because I listened to rock. I read books. I didn’t watch reality TV. I didn’t drink Pumpkin Spice lattes, or wear makeup. I refused to wear pink. I hated flowers and anything else “girly” I saw. (This paired well with the fact I was a GNC child who would grow into her identity as a lesbian.)
I took every single thing traditionally associated with women, and I decided it was all beneath me. Why? Because my mother told me women were stupid, so anything that was typically associated with them must be trash.
My mom taught me to judge women.
“Gay women are always so mean and ugly.”
“Look at how she’s dressed. She’s just telling guys all she’s good for is sex.”
“Oh my god, she looks atrocious.”
I learned to judge my sisters very early on.
And it hurt. Because when I graduated and I went to a school with other girls, I immediately judged them. Very unfavorably. And here’s the thing, when you decide you’re better than other people, those people don’t want to be around you.
And the boys looked at me the way I looked at other girls.
It was a lonely existence of spite and anger.
Finally, when I was 21 or 22, I decided I wouldn’t participate in girl-on-girl hatred anymore.
I would correct myself when I thought bad shit about other girls. I don’t know anything about them, how can I judge?
I began to support women. I refused to say bad shit about any girl, just because she likes reality TV, or wearing makeup, or drinks Starbucks every morning.
Let me tell you. Something fucking magical happened.
Those girls that hated me for judging them? They welcomed me with open arms. They didn’t care if I wasn’t into the same shit as them, as long as I was willing to keep an open mind and give it a shot. No fair knocking it until you try it!
I found a huge support system of women, in real life, and across the globe, who are beautiful, and funny, and all unique in their own amazing ways, and I am so grateful I decided not to be the angry, spiteful person my mother taught me I should be.
And hey, guess what?
Pumpkin Spice lattes are pretty good.
