IT stuff knocking around in my head and what I've been doing the last 3 years

Got this idea to get my old radio station running again last night (06/10/2024) and now I'm definitely doing it. Tippy Radio will rise once more! I created my own Network Attached Storage System (NAS/File Server) back in 2020 with a Raspberry pi which then also became a plex server to stream all the films and tv shows in my collection in the home and outside. Eventually I figured Proxmox would let me do more with just the one pc and now it's grown into an adblocker with plex and my nas all in one. The old pc I'm using is a Dell Optiplex 3050 with an i5-6500T and 32gb of ram. It's not fast by any means with just 4 threads and no hyperthreading but she does the job for now. I'm upgrading as soon as I get the funds saved up to a Ryzen 9 7900 with 96gb of ram. I didn't choose the 9900X because I want more efficiency as a whole but I will be tweaking the voltage a little since I'm a classic undervolter so I'll try and squeeze a little bit of extra performance without using extra power. My plan after the upgrade is potentially to get my old radio station running again with MacOS in a vm. So far I've managed to get Sequoia running but with the new machine with 12 cores and 24 total threads, it'll damn near fly. My other idea for the server since I've started using Steam Remote Play outside the house is to add my 6700xt from my current gaming rig to the server and pass it through to a Windows 11 vm and then remotely play games around the house. The challenge is making Windows believe it's running on bare metal. Even though I don't play multiplayer games, I'm not trying to have my account banned for the anti-cheat considering a virtual machine to be cheating It's funny how teachers in college and school said I would never be an IT guy but I've consistently been the family and friends IT guy people go to for advice since I was a kid.

Lowest possible voltage to give longest battery life and an issue flashing with linux

On my current watchface (Pokemon V2) there was a voltage to percentage style display for the watch. I decided to do a bit of reading and found the lowest operating voltage for a lot of the hardware on the watchy was 3 volts. I also noted that the 200mAh 402030 LiPo included with the watch had a cut-off voltage of 2.75. At the moment I'm on 54% power left with 3.66 volts on the battery which after two weeks without charging should easily give another 2-3 weeks of battery life before the next recharge, as long as I'm right in thinking all the other components inside the watch will actually keep working that long but I'll post an update around the voltage it actually stops running.

Also, I use an Arch-Based Linux OS and it took me ages to find a way to flash my Watchy but for now I'm opening a terminal and running sudo su > cd / > cd dev > chown <username> ttyUSB0. I do this after connecting the Watchy and for now it's worked a charm but I had to dig around to find out how to do this which is kind of why I bought a Watchy in the first place, I wanted to improve my knowledge of coding and electronics at the same time

Remembering the victims of the horrific Uvalde school shooting

On May 24 in Uvalde, Texas the lives of 19 fourth-graders and two adults were ended by an 18-year-old gunman in one of the deadliest school

How many more kids do we have to lose before Americans wake up and realise they need better gun laws & regulations.

Some of these kids weren't even 10 years old. There was so much potential that will now be unfulfilled and so much life that was left to be lived. These kids didn't even get to experience the outside world, fall in love or or experience anything life truly had to offer.

Building and testing stuff

The other week I decided to test out my linux/ programming knowledge by buying an arduino based hackable smartwatch (SQFMI Watchy). After feeling like I'm completely out of my depth with this little project, I have finally managed to get almost everything working after almost 5 days. I had to give myself access to the serial ports in order to upload anything to my new watch. I've been using linux for well over 10 years and did not even know this was a thing!

Earlier this year I turned a Raspberry Pi into a NAS solution for files and such using OpenMediaVault. I also used a second Pi to watch some of the films in the living room instead of building a new pc to accomplish the same task. So far the two work excellently. To combat thermals the living room Pi has an Armour Case and the pi upstairs setup as a NAS just has the simple large cpu heatsink.

I'm not entirely sure what's next for these little projects of mine but I'm still planning to try a few new things

Voice dropped, didn't like it

I wonder how many people there are, especially guys who loved the voice they had before their voice dropped to the point where they still keep their voice higher on purpose and now find it difficult to use their regular deeper voice around people.

I'm constantly told my voice sounds way too young for my age and now I can't use my deeper voice around people because it's become too normal to use my higher voice. Like has anyone actually ever heard me speak with my normal voice before except when I'm ill?

Just some weird stuff from my job from this afternoon... The company owner is Arabic, he believes anyone who's a lesbian or gay can be fixed because it's all in the brain. I, on the other hand believe our shop is a safe space for anyone who falls under the lgbt umbrella and shouldn't have any negative comments made about them just because of their sexuality or body they were born with, so I put one of the attributes on our Google page as "LGBT Friendly". Today I got told to remove that attribute because it interferes with what he believes in. I know I don't personally come under lgbt but as an asexual I can't help but feel attacked. This dude is always telling me I just need to have sex with people or go and see a masseuse and have a massage with a happy ending so it will cure me because I'm just shy or some shit. I get Arabs and people in the Middle East are raised differently and taught being gay is practically a sin but I'm more than happy to have this entire business go down the pan because of this. If I leave the company then it will most likely shut down within 3 weeks. I love my job but at the same time, I cant work for anyone who has such backward views. The amount of times he's talked about how gay people are disgusting and how there's just something wrong with them and how being a lesbian is just a fetish to please men. Makes it worse knowing we're in a student area with people aged between 18-25 and they're probably just getting used to being open about their sexuality and gender with people who are fully accepting of who they are.

Following on from this, today he's taking the multicoloured design off our loyalty cards because it 'looks gay' whatever the fuck that means. Is this man honestly so freaked out about gay people he won't even have anything colourful in his shop? Just you wait until I hang my pride flag in this motherfucker next year. Wait for this son of a bitch to lose the only member of staff who actually knows what they're doing and finally close this shop down only to open a vegan takeaway. Not my problem if I'd rather work in a place where I'm not told that I should be straight instead of asexual and how gay people shouldn't exist or even how transsexual people and lesbians just do things because they're fetishized. Jesus Christ, I used to work at a hospital where nothing mattered other than how good you were at the work, they didn't care about any of this stuff and if anyone mentioned they were under the lgbtq+ umbrella then we'd be supporting of them and make them feel welcomed. How the hell can I work for a company where the owner doesn't even make me feel like I should be here? For fucks sake, he's scared of rainbows, god only knows how messed up you have to be to think rainbows are gay.

Paying rent and paying for an education and an experience has been a massive failure this year for all students in the UK over 2020/1. I might not support protests during covid but I do support people coming together to support a common goal
