★★☆★★☆★★☆★★
The street was quiet. Too quiet for your liking. The kind of quiet that always preceded something... Usually a predator pouncing on an unsuspecting prey...
Something in your peripheral vision sent you sprinting. It was almost the end of the game and you were much more jumpy and paranoid than ever.
It may have been just a mouse or an empty tin can knocked over by the chilly wind... But you were not taking your chances.
You sprinted down the alleyways and parking lots. But after running and evading all night... You were completely exhausted. It was no surprise that your leg gave out under you in the most inconvenient moment.
You winced as your knees hit the ground and you skidded to a stop. Clenching your teeth you rolled over to your side.
Great. Just your luck to land full speed into a patch of glass. You sucked in a breath, inspecting the damage. Your knees were massacred and bloodied. And a particularly sharp piece of glass embedded itself into your right leg.
Ouch.
You tried getting up, but even the slightest movement sent a sharp impulse of pain all the way through your leg.
With trembling hands you pulled out your phone and dialed Doctor's number.
He picks up on the third ring
"Hypothetically," you start, skipping the greeting.
"Sweetheart, you know how I love when you start your questions like that"
"If someone had bloodied knees and a piece of glass stuck in their knee... What would you advise they do?"
"It is not a hypothetical situation, is it, Y/n?"
"...No... I guess it isn't," you wince.
"In such a situation, it would be best to go to a doctor, but I think you already know that"
"Oh" you blink, "Can- can you come help me?"
"Of course, doll"
★☆★
Not much later his massive figure emerged from the shadows. All clad in black with red accents, it was uncanny. There was a small med kit in his hand.
He stood before you surveying the damage. His eyes glowing crimson in the dark. It sends a cold shiver down your spine.
"You got hurt. Perhaps letting you run off was a mistake"
"It was an accident," you frown.
"You are remarkably prone to them, dear patient," he counters, readjusting his gloves, "Perhaps I should permanently keep you in my medical tent strapped to the chair to prevent further accidents"
You violently shake your head.
"I don't think there's a need for that"
"I'm not so sure. As a doctor I must do what's best for my patient"
"I'll be more careful," is the best you can offer, but it's enough to make his eyes fade back to cyan. You let out a breath quietly, hoping he wouldn't notice you held it - knowing, he likely did.
His hands are gentle as he lifts you up and carries you to a bench nearby. His body is warm and you can't help but lean into him.
"You will have to let go, sweetheart, I can't work on your wound if you cling to me like this," he whispers right into your ear.
"Oh, sorry," you reply sheepishly, letting go off him and stumbling over to the bench.
"Though I must admit it is rather enjoyable," he muses quietly under his breath. If you had somehow managed to contain your blushing before, this comment did it for you. You had to turn away and hope he didn't notice. His content chuckling indicated he probably did.
He settled you onto the bench, before kneeling infront of you. His massive hand easily picked up your thigh to inspect the damage to your knee closer. He hummed in disaprooval.
"This will sting just a little, doll," he muttered picking up a bottle of disinfectant, "but if you behave I might give you a treat after"
"I'm not so small that you need to bribe me with treats, you know?"
The Doctor hums in acknowledgement, "Whatever you say, sweetie"
"But... If you're offering so generously... Who am I to say no to candy?" you grin.
You don't hear him laugh, but from how his shoulders are shaking you can guess it.
"But perhaps the treat I'm offering you is not of that kind"
"O-oh?" You scramble for a more coherent and witty response, but before you can figure it out, he says:
"All done, sweetheart"
The Doctor was truly a master of keeping you distracted while he performed his medical procedures, be it disinfecting the wound or something more... gorey.
He tied the bandage around your knee into a tight bow, but did not hurry to move away. Instead, he remained crouched in front of you and caressed your knee through the bandage.
Finally, he bent down and placed a small kiss on the flesh above the bandaged wound, before straightening back up.
"You should not put stress on your leg," he utters in his deep voice before getting up to sit on the bench next to you.
"Doctor's orders?" You confirm with a grin.
"Doctor's orders," he repeats back at you, before picking you up and pulling you into his lap.
"Looks like I won, sweetheart"
"Oh, I guess... So what are you going to do to me?"
"I have a few tests I'd need a willing participant for. And you would be just the perfect subject"
"O-oh" you can't help but feel a surge of disappointment, but it is soon enough replaced by fear when you recall the kinds of tests the Doctor is inclined to conduct.
His head tilts to the side as he surveys and commits to memory every micro expression you make.
"But don't worry, it won't hurt. You might even come to enjoy it"
"And... What kind of tests will you conduct? I have a right to know what I am consenting to"
"Circulatory and cardiovascular systems' reactions to outward stimulants and manipulation of your immediate surroundings"
"So... How my blood and heart react when something... Happens"
He smiles, the way he always does when you discern something in his medical terminology.
"Precisely, my precious test subject," his thumb traces your jawline.
"My hypothesis is that when I talk to you like this," he leaned in intimately close, his breath fanning your ear, "your heartbeat speeds up. "
His fingers glide to your pulse point. And for a moment you both stay utterly still, just the sounds of your elevated heartbeat between the both of you.
He smiles in satisfaction.
"And if I kiss you, it might even reach a critical value"
You held your breath.
He did not close the mere millimetres separating you.
"Won't you test your hypothesis?"
"I'm afraid your little delicate human heart will not take such a strain. I prefer to keep such a willing test subject alive," his fingers still kept on your pulse point.
You frown.
"I'm resilient. Besides, hypotheses are meant to be tested. Is that not the foundation of science?"
He smiles.
"Very well, my dearest patient, your insistence is very amusing"
He tilts his mask to the side and leans in. Your breath catches in your throat. And for a second you're afraid his theory might come true.
But when his lips are on yours... Somehow all those thoughts melt into the background.
The kiss is slow
A comfortable warmth descends through you, piercing your very core, making you melt in his arms.
Having ascertained that your heart is not nearing it's critical condition, the Doctor smiled in satisfaction and deepened the kiss.
You hide your hands in the warmth under his massive cloak, tracing patterns against the muscles of his back.
When you finally separate for breath, the Doctor hums,
"What a perfect subject you are. Always so willing to test out my theories..."
You can't help but say
"Hm... Allow me to propose my own theory then"
"Of course, sweetie, I'd love to hear what your fascinating brain meant to be studied in a lab can come up with"
You giggle at his words.
"My theory, is that you're not really interested in studying me. You just use that as an excuse to get close to me. And to try to fluster me" you shoot him a challenging smirk.
"Unfortunately you are very mistaken, dear patient. I love studying your every single reaction." His fingers gently trace along your collarbone and down your arm, grabbing your wrist and positioning his fingers on your pulse there, "The way your heart rate spikes up. And how you breath hitches. How your brows furrow and your pupils dilate... But why would that exclude the possibility of me wanting to be close to you?"
"I suppose it doesn't..."
"After all, knowing all the ways I make your body react makes you taste so much sweeter"
He nuzzles his face into the crook of your neck, his lips right above your pulse point. His claws run through your hair, gently massaging your scalp. You lean into his touch. Into him. You're surrounded, practically engulfed by his form.
And if you were honest, you wouldn't mind staying like this as long as the cover of the night allows you.

Hide and Seek (Part 2)
Ticket Taker's ending
A/n: genuinely don't know why this ended up a bit darker than Pierrot's... Maybe because Pierrot's a sweetheart and TT is... Not so much... Either way, enjoy:)
Summary: this is a continuation to one of my previous posts, linked here: tfc X reader hide and seek
Warning: this work is based on an 18+ game, even though my work itself is not explicit
Tw: biting, mentions of murder and decapitation (but only mentions, it's not even a threat), paperwork XDD
★★☆★★☆★★☆★★
You were staring at the slightly stained spot on the front of the Ticket Takers jacket with utter terror.
Damn.
A tenderly hopeful though crosses your mind - maybe he wouldn't notice? But who were you kidding. It would be the first thing he'd spot. And he'd have your head on a stake.
Maybe... If you find one of the others... They'd be some sort of buffer between you and Ticket Taker? Maybe that would grant you a sort of immunity?
You have your doubts, but that's worth a try...
Though... Perhaps before that you ought to try to salvage the jacket. Yeah... that's a sound idea. Maybe he'll even appreciate the effort and be more lenient towards you.
Maybe he'll let you draft a will before decapitating you.
★☆★
And that's how you found yourself furiously scrubbing the spot on his jacket with wet tissues in the bathroom of the 24/7 open diner.
You inspected your work.
Well... You can barely see the spot. Maybe he won't notice. You put the jacket back on, adjusting the lapels to partially cover the now wet spot on the front. A quick glance in the mirror tells you it's mostly fine. Yeah... Once it dries it probably wont be even that visible. And you'll keep your head.
Right.
Now all you really have to do is avoid Ticket Taker until the fabric dries. You have a hunch that if he saw the wet jacket he would put 2 and 2 together... You'd rather he didn't.
You look into the bathroom mirror one last time. Good enough. You do a little spin, then beam proudly at your work.
"Crisis averted"
Your grin slides off your face when you notice a characteristic black and white mask, split in the middle and 2 deep blue eyes peering at you from the glossy surface.
His frame is composed as always, but you can see the tension in his shoulders. His hands are behind his back, which seems a deliberate choice to control his actions better.
"Dearest, why don't you tell me the reason for my jacket's current state"
"I'd really rather not..."
He cocks his head to the side, "Is that so? Perhaps I should remind you of consequences of such outward disobedience?"
"I'd really rather you didn't... The jacket- it got stained. But I fixed it now"
"I see" his voice has an edge to it, as his eyes scan your frame once again, inspecting the damage.
"Please don't kill me," you look down at your feet
His hand reached out through the mirror to cup your cheek, making you look at him.
"That is upsetting. But one blunder does not necessitate such drastic measures. And you did... attempt... To clean it"
The word 'attempt' is said with such disdain it makes you shiver
You raise your eyes at him, hopeful.
"I will be lenient this one time"
"Are you mad?"
"I am livid."
"Oh... But you forgive me?"
"Forgiveness must be earned, dearest... Besides, it looks like I caught you"
He finally fully steps out of the mirror, placing his other hand on the small of your back. The hand that previously cupped your cheek slides behind your head and into your hair. He is practically caging you in his arms.
You blink.
"You can walk through mirrors"
"I can do many things, dear one. Now. Let us not get distracted from the matters at hand, yes?"
You nod, unsure of what exactly he means by the 'matters at hand' or how he expects you to earn your forgiveness.
"So what do you uhh... Expect me to do?"
"For starters," he lifts your chin with two fingers making you look right into his eyes, "I'll have your silence. No unnecessary questions or distracting noise. Is that something you can do for me?"
"O- okay, yeah"
"Good. Now then..." He leaned in impossibly close, his breath fanned your cheek as he said
"Try not to move too much. It would be unbeneficial for my intentions."
He waits patiently for a nod or any confirmation from you - as if you had any other choice but to comply, before closing the space between his mouth and your neck. What follows is a sharp sensation of pain. You suck in a breath.
"What are you- why?"
"I thought I made my request for silence clear, dear one"
Ticket Taker straightens back up, admiring his work. You frown at his non-answer. He takes in your expression and after a second of contemplation answers:
"I'm cataloguing you."
"Why?"
"My jacket, which is now stained anyway, was not enough of a claim to prevent foreign intervention and your escape. It was a negligence on my part. I correct my mistakes. Such a mark will be harder to dispute."
His thumb traces the bitten spot and you can see satisfaction paint itself clearly on his face.
He leans in closer, "But we should not leave anything up to chance. I like my things properly labeled. And you're mine now"
His mouth is on your neck again, but he does not bite. It's gentler this time. He tugs on your hair, forcing your head backwards and exposing your skin. He hums in approval as his teeth mark you again.
He pulls back briefly to survey his progress. You lock eyes with him, breathing heavily and his smile widens.
The next moment his lips are on yours. His hand travels to cup your cheek, another one firmly on your waist - possessive and grounding.
The kiss is forceful and controlled. Every movement - guided and calculated. His tongue traces your bottom lip, demanding access. but you seem to pay it no mind - blissed out of your mind at the sensation of his lips against yours.
Ticket Taker grows impatient groaning into the kiss but not breaking it. Instead, he bites your lip. You can't hold back a gasp and he uses the opportunity perfectly to slide his tongue into your mouth.
Now you're even more dazed. Your hand moves on it's own reaching for his chest and resting against it to ground you. The other one slides up his arm and to the back of his neck.
The kiss stops abruptly.
Ticket Taker's hand closes around your wrist, pulling your hands away.
His face is still intimately close, but the blue glow of his eyes betrays his anger.
"I do not recall granting you permission to do that," he utters in a low voice.
You flare up in indignation. So he can do all that to you and you're supposed to- what? Stand still and do nothing?
"But you-"
He presses a finger to your lips, "I'm afraid you're forgetting your place, my dear. We can't have that."
You keenly await another harsh bite to remind you of the importance of obedience. Or more restrictions before he continues the kiss. But it doesn't come.
You look at him in question when he takes a step back and adjusts his hat and gloves with precise, clinical motions.
"You are enjoying this far too much, dearest. I will not be rewarding disobedience"
He steps towards the mirror and motions for you to follow him.
Once you reach him on your still shaky legs, he offers you his elbow, after all, he's still a gentleman.
He guides you through the mirror and you can't help but marvel at the transition. For a moment you forget your uncertain predicament and simply look around in wonder.
You step out of the mirror in a different place. It's darker and dominated by navy and black colours. You recognise it instantly.
"We're in your tent"
"How very observant, dear guest"
"What are we going to do here?"
He nudged you forward in lieu of an answer.
He clicked his tongue in displeasure when you did not move.
"We do not have all day, dearest. If you could hurry, that would be best."
He grabbed you by the shoulder and guided you forward. You were very much surprised when you both arrived at his desk piled with paperwork and files - all stacked neatly
You blink. "What is this?"
"Consequences of disobedience. I expect you to be done with at least three files when I come back"
"But I thought-"
"Rest assured, dearest, I know exactly what you thought. It is in your best interest to finish this as quickly as possible. I expect you to be ready to continue when I'm back. I do not like to wait."
And just like that, he turned and strode away to the mirror. Leaving you alone with the paperwork in his tent, keenly awaiting his return and... Continuation of what you both started.

Hide and Seek (Part 2)
Pierrot ending
Summary: this is a continuation to one of my previous posts, linked here: tfc X reader hide and seek
A/n: you met him first in game... The honour of being the first completed ending goes to him!
Anyway, enjoy:)
Warning: this is based on an 18+ game and while I don't wade into openly explicit themes in the fic... The game itself was intended for mature audience.
★★☆★★☆★★☆★★
The dawn sky was stunning. You couldn't help but stop to admire it a while. A couple of faint rays of the slowly waking up sun wandered along the horizon. The clouds - gilded by the rays - drifted slowly along the skyline, chasing the last dreams of the night. You loved this, especially the amber colour of it. Especially because they remind you of someone's eyes. His eyes.
Your hand instinctively reaches for your phone, going through the familiar motions of selecting his contact. Your finger hovers over the call button. With one last glance at the golden dawn you press the button.
He picks up almost instantly.
"Pierrot?"
"My Lady?" His voice trembles slightly, the same way it did when you ran your hands through his hair for the first time or when you gave him compliments.
You keep it brief, "The sky is the colour of your eyes. I miss you"
"Y/n, I have been searching and yearning for you the entirety of the night... Don't do this to me if you do not intend to tell me where you are"
"I-" you hesitate a moment, "I need you," you say quietly in the end
There is heavy breathing on the other end. "If I send you my address will you come?"
"Of course, My Lady, I will always come when you call. I only fear I will not hold myself back when I reach you" The last part is easy to miss, his voice is barely above a whisper. It makes your heart skip a beat and pick up pace.
★☆★
It was scary how little time it took for him to get to you once you told him where you were. 2 minutes to be exact. One moment you were standing, waiting for him and the next you were picked up and pressed into his chest.
You let out a startled yelp. His arms tightened around you.
"I did not mean to startle you, my love," his voice is feverish, "But I could only bear so much without your touch. Without your voice. Without you..."
You could feel the way his heart hammered in his chest and his heavy breathing intermingled with recollections of how dreadful the separation was for him. You let him have this moment, let him cling to you as if you might disappear if he ever let go. Let him nuzzle into your neck as your hands run through his silver locks. Let him whisper to you sweet words that send shivers down your spine.
A few minutes later you moved away slightly. He pouted instantly.
"So what do you want to do, now that you caught me?"
"W-well, if i could have anything-" his cheeks are coated in rosy blush as he looks to the side sheepishly.
You reach to cup his face in your hands and move it, making him look at you. Making his amber eyes meet yours.
"Anything," you say caressing his cheek with your thumb, he leans into your touch, rubbing his cheek against your palm.
"Anything? My Lady, you're too generous to me"
You only smile.
"All I've been thinking this night about was you... I want your thoughts to be only of me as well. I want to make you forget the outside world ever existed... And I want to mark you for the whole universe to know you are mine. For that Harlequin to see and to back off" His eyes darken and there are tiny vengeful sparks burning inside.
Their rivalry is for the books - even in such a moment it lingers in his mind. You giggle.
"You caught me, Pierrot, I'm yours"
It's not strictly true - you let him catch you. But that's a victory in its own right. A heart that's given willingly. Not taken by force. That's harder to achieve. And yet, your heart is in his hands now. And you know he holds it with gentle trepidation, like the most treasured possession.
Pierrot leans in closer, his forehead touching yours. He closes his eyes and whispers sweet promises to you, his breath dancing right on your lips. Light and intimate.
"Will... The 'anything' that you want to do, involve you kissing me? Because I think I'd really like that"
His golden eyes are practically heart shaped, but you don't get to admire him for long, as his lips are already on yours.
It's intense and sweet and alluring. His hands run up and down along your back as he tries to pull you impossibly closer. You melt in his grasp
Your hand reaches into his hair, running through it and tugging lightly. He groans against your lips, pulling away only to mutter "You have no idea what you do to me, My Lady, you make me lose my mind... I wanted to be gentle, but I have been waiting for this for too long. I'm afraid I can't hold myself back much longer," his words are rushed, as he searches your face for a smidge of fear. He finds none.
You smiled at him sweetly, pulling him closer:
"You don't need to hold back, Pierrot, not tonight"
He does not dwell on that thought too much, opting to press feather light kisses along your neck until he reaches your shoulder. He pauses, a second of hesitation, before biting down. His teeth are sharp and you are almost certain they drew blood.
You let out a startled gasp, your hand on his shoulder twitches, he grabs it interlacing your fingers. He looks up at you, his golden eyes flicker with concern.
"My Lady, are you hurt? You said you'd let me- I thought-"
You take a breath, your bottom lip still trembling slightly before taking his face in your hands, "My darling Pierrot, I love you and I love how you worry for me, but I'm not made out of glass. I'm not that easily breakable"
It sounds ironic, as he clutches your small frame against his massive torso. But you mean it.
"You have to admit that I wouldn't have been so successful at evading you all if I were as fragile as you treat me," you can't help but muse, "Besides, I told you - anything. And I mean it. A little blood won't scare me"
His eyes shine in adoration and you are sure you are mirroring his expression, "I would love, though, if you'd let me... Return the favour"
"You want to mark... Me?" A blush is creeping up his cheeks again.
You nod, your lips curling into a smile at his flustered face and twinkling eyes.
"I could never imagine-" his hands on your forearms tighten as he gazes into your very soul with his amber eyes, "Yes, My Lady, I'd- I'd love that"
You stand on your tiptoes and when Pierrot notices your struggle to reach him, he simply lifts you up in his arms like you weigh nothing - to him you probably do. Your lips brush against his skin and you can feel him shudder. You sense his pulse pick up. The bite is slow and soft and you leave a small kiss before pulling back.
The way Pierrot looks at you, with reverence and love, it makes your heart melt.
"How you make my heart rush, my love... I am overjoyed... I'd love to stay like this, with you, for all eternity"
He dips his head down to leave a few more marks - a trail of bites and kisses from your shoulder to your collar bone.
Your phone rings.
You drop the call. It rings again, and you swear you can feel it ring more insistently. When it rings the third time, Pierrot growls slightly in agitation against your neck.
"It's Harlequin," you sigh
Pierrot growls in anger.
"My Lady, can't you block him?" He sounds pleading and annoyed at the same time - not annoyed at you, never at you... At that Harlequin that even now, even when he's not here manages to ruin the moment for Pierrot.
"Well..."
"You said you'd do anything," you can practically hear him pout, nuzzled against your neck, "My Lady, you should not be bothered by the likes of him..." You're surprised how much disdain Pierrot can pack into his tone when speaking about the green-eyed menace "Allow me to deal with him myself"
He opens one palm for your phone, his other hand still firm on your waist, his thumb stroking you gently.
Dumbfounded you hand him the device. When the phone rings again he picks up, quietly and with a murderous intent he mutters, "Do not call her. You lost. Y/n is mine" before dropping the call and blocking his number.
Who would have thought, he'd use his ability to make you yield to him for a petty purpose like blocking his rival? Frankly, you should have guessed. He always had a possessive streak.
You'd have to unblock Harlequin later.
Pierrot tilts his head to the side and shoots you an abashed smile before proceeding to pick up where you left off.

"Looks like our little pet is getting agitated" Jester mused after yet again you tried to sneak out of the circus.
"You know, dear guest, this was unnecessary and out of line..."
"This is dumb. I'm allowed to leave the tents. I've left before"
"Not without informing us first" Ticket Taker says. What you hear is 'not without permission'.
"Darling, you know how easy it is to kidnap people," Jester's tone carries slight notes of mockery.
You sigh, "Seeing as I am practically kidnapped by all of you right now... Yeah, I do"
"We just worry for your safety, My Lady" Pierrot's head rests on your shoulder, so you have to turn to grab his face in your hands. A light blush coats his cheeks at your action.
"As much as I love you, Pierrot, and as much as I want to believe it, I'm afraid you're the only one who is actively concerned for my safety in this case. The others... just really like telling me 'no', for some reason"
That earns a chuckle from Jester.
The Doctor cocks his head to the side: "It is hardly our fault your reactions to refusal are so... intriguing. Ranging from bickering and giving a cold shoulder to outright disregarding whatever we say."
"Is that so? Maybe I should add rearranging your supplies to the range... Or running away from the circus and getting married in Vegas?" You cross your arms and pout, feeling even more outraged when Doctor takes out a notebook and jots something down.
"Perhaps your energy should be redirected elsewhere... How about a game, darling?"
"A game? What, like hide and seek?"
"Could be hide and seek"
★☆★
"You'll have an hour to hide... Anywhere, wherever you desire"
You bite your tongue tempted to ask if you could buy a plane ticket and leave the country in that one hour... If you timed it right and was very lucky you'd probably manage it.
"Once the time is up we begin our hunt"
"Weird word choice," you mumble
Their smiles widen.
"Be assured dear, this word choice is intentional" Harlequin leans into your personal space, curling a loose strand of your hair around his finger. He's making it hard to focus.
"Alright... And once you capture me..."
"Once you're caught... You're at the complete mercy of your captor"
"What?" This sounds absurd, so it takes for Jester to reiterate it, for it to trully sink in.
"Once you are caught... We'll do as we please"
"Oh..." You stare at your feet for a few seconds
They all wait patiently for you to say something else.
"Did- did you have dinner tonight? You're... Not hungry are you?"
It takes them a moment to process your question, before they laugh.
"Your worried face is adorable"
"There are different types of hunger, dear... And I'm already starved for you" Harlequin runs his fingers down the side of your face and stops at your pulse point. He presses lightly to feel it beneath his fingers
"My Lady, don't take him seriously, we won't eat you"
"Thanks..."
"It would do you well to remember, darling, that Pierrot can only promise for himself... The night is long... Who knows how we'll feel about devouring you by the end of it..." The whole situation seems to be highly amusing to Jester.
Your eyes widened again at this.
He grins, "I merely jest"
Despite yourself you let out a giggle. It's rare to have Jester in such a good mood... He must be thoroughly enjoying the whole ordeal.
"Be assured, guest, your death would inconvenience us, we shall refrain from harming you, as long as you follow the orders"
"Leave it to Ticket Taker to validate your feelings and make you feel needed" Harlequin laughs.
You send Harlequin a small smile, before asking a question that has been bugging you for half of the conversation:
"And if you don't succeed in getting me?"
"I wouldn't worry your pretty head with that improbability. We have the entire night"
"I don't think this is very fair. You guys have a clear advantage. I mean, there's five of you... And I'm only one"
"Ah, but here's where you're mistaken, darling... We do not like to share." There was a dangerous glimmer in their eyes. You realised they would not be playing as a team... No... For this night they'd be enemies, all striving to win. And you're the prize.
They savour your expression for a moment, before Jester gives you a little shove.
"Now run along little mouse. Hide. Run. Do what you like... We already know how this ends"
His words are enough to send you sprinting out of the tent and into the night.

That was 40 minutes ago. Now you were wandering the streets. Still 20 minutes of protected time and you were keeping a steady pace, trying to put as much distance between yourself and them as you could.
You had to silence your phone 10 minutes into the game - it was going off incessantly with messages from Harlequin - brainstorming what he'd do to you once he caught you. Apparently waiting was taking a toll on him if he decided to bombard you with such very descriptive imagery.
At the 45 minute mark your phone rings. You automatically decline. Harlequin has tried calling you 10 times in the past 10 minutes. He really is getting impatient. Apparently just texting you his fantasies isn't enough anymore.
It buzzes with a text. With a sigh you take it out, fully intent on blocking Harlequin for the duration of the night. Will it make him more vengeful if he catches you? Definitely. But at this point you're willing to take your chances. Besides. Him catching you is only a 1 in 5 probability.
There are worse candidates to piss off. Like Jester.
The text is from Ticket Taker. Brief and to the point:
"It would do you well not to decline Jester's calls next time, doll. You wouldn't want to anger the one who could hold your fate in his claws by the end of the night..."
Ah... Guess you jinxed it.
You try dialing Jester again a few times. But apparently he's taking pleasure in declining your calls after you declined his. Great.
Instead, you call Ticket Taker. He picks up, bit it's Jester who speaks, "Darling, learn to pick up your phone. You have it for a reason"
"Sorry...I thought it was-"
"I'm aware. Which is why I'll let this one slide"
"Really?"
"No" there is laughter and mirth in his voice, "I'll consider it. The events of the night can sway my opinion," he muses, "speaking of...There is a slight change in rules"
"Midgame?"
"Yes. We'll start our hunt a bit early"
"How early?"
"Now"
"What? But- that's not-" you sputter.
"Unfortunately your lack of engagement made Harlequin really impatient. He has already started. And we can't have him get an advantage, can we? Besides... Pierrot is not taking the wait well, especially now that Harlequin is out and about"
"Of fucking course it was Harlequin" you mutter.
"I wouldn't waste your breath on curses, darling, now, run along, don't make the chase end too soon... Make it interesting"

By the third hour you get an inkling that perhaps this was never meant to be a simple game. Perhaps they treated it as more of an elaborate foreplay than an actual competition. Perhaps you were meant to let them catch you. You debate searching for one of them. But quickly brush the idea aside. Then you debate calling Jester or Ticket Taker... Probably not Harlequin... To ask for clarifications... But you can easily imagine how that conversation would go:
"Hi, I'm a bit dense. Was this meant to be foreplay or something?"
No... You are not ready for that type of humiliation yet.
Besides. You've already made up your mind. You would really love to see their faces at dawn. After you have successfully evaded capture. You can practically taste the sweet flavour of victory... Oh that would be just marvelous... Simply exhilarating. The mere thought of beating those monsters at a game you were never meant to win fills you with adrenaline and it's all you need to keep going...
You always had a bit of a competitive streak. It made everything that much more fun...
★☆★
Four hours in and you get a call from Pierrot. You contemplate letting it go to voicemail, but begrudgingly pick up. He tends to worry more than necessary. And while it's endearing... It's probably not great for his state.
Besides, he should not suffer just because Harlequin annoyed you into not picking up calls (that already happened with Jester and you had no interest in expanding the list of people you ghosted).
"My Lady? Are you alright?" His tone is laced with concern, making your heart swell.
"Of course I am, why? Should I... Not be... Alright?" You laugh nervously.
"We haven't caught you yet, I thought something happened to you."
"Oh Pierrot, I promise I'm alright. I'm just really good at running and hiding."
"You are, My Lady, but I'd prefer you didn't. At least not from me. I miss you already."
"I promise, once the game is over, I'll give you as many cuddles as you want, deal?"
"But My Lady, you could tell me where you are now... And we wouldn't have to wait," he sounds so convincing you're tempted to give in.
You chuckle, "But Pierrot, that's probably against the rules"
You can sense him pouting through the phone. You're about to say something more comforting, when you notice a looming presence out of the corner of your eye. Instead, you say:
"Pierrot? I gotta go, unless you want me caught by someone else"
You turn towards the figure, stuffing your phone back in your pocket. Tall, broad shoulders. Would be very very intimidating if you didn't know him as well as you do, and even now in the dark, illuminated by the moonlight, he still sends shivers down your spine.
"Hey," you try for a casual greeting. You did not expect to be caught so quickly.
He nods in acknowledgement, his soft steps resonate quietly on the ground as he approaches slowly.
"Your little escapade is about to be terminated"
"Interesting hypothesis, I'd love to disproove it"
"I'm afraid you don't have a chance, sweetie, I do not like leaving my patients unattended for a long time" he smiles and approaches you, there is soft fondness in his demeanour, which goes in dissonance with his menacing figure.
"Ah, but tonight I'm more of a riveting experiment, you must agree... And experiments are not to be interfered with"
"I've had enough impartial observations for tonight, dear, I would like to move on to a more hands-on approach"
"How did you track me down?" You try to prolong the conversation, giving yourself precious seconds to find a way out. You can't have this end so soon.
"You will be disappointed, sweetheart, pure chance... Or perhaps good intuition of what my patient likes"
You hum noncomitally, a plan already half-formed in your head. It's only fair you use any and every means of escape you have, you reason. Especially considering you're not caught, yet...
Jester told you to make it interesting... And you will...
You begin your motion, careful not to alert him. Though you're already certain he clocked in that you're up to something.
"You do know me pretty well..."
In fact, you have an inkling he even knows what you're about to do... In vague details... But is letting you proceed, curious to where it may lead...
"Well enough to know you do not intend to give in so easily... Tell me, why is that?"
"A secret," you grin.
"You must be mistaken, sweetheart, a patient does not have secrets from their Doctor... I am disappointed my favourite one would forget such an important rule"
"That's fair... I suppose I just enjoy the thrill and the taste of freedom.. or maybe I just want to win."
The lights right ahead signal the approaching bus, you pay it no mind, afraid even a flicker of eyes in that direction might betray your intentions. No, until the very last moment you will not look.
"You look mesmerising... When your heart pounds in your chest and adrenaline courses through your veins," he observes, "It is a good look on you"
The bus stops.
"I'm sorry, Doctor, but I think I might have to reschedule my appointment," you say before making a mad dash for the already closing doors.
He watches the bus drive off with an almost fond smile. He was always one of the most lenient towards you, somehow.
You get a text message:
"Of course, sweetheart, the Doctor always wants what's best for their patient. But I do hope to rendezvous with you tonight once more... Perhaps you won't run off the next time"
You grin. His response makes your heart beat just a bit faster. That and how he always manages to clock in your every mood and craving - much how right now you absolutely need to continue the game (and to win, of course)
★☆★
You halt at the train station to catch your breath. The lit up sign says the next one out of town is in 10 minutes. Of course you weren't planning on leaving. That's not the point of the game. Which by the way, has really grown on you. But it was a very good opportunity to tease your favourite monsters.
You take a photo, posing where they could see the sign and the ticket purchasing machine.
And scramble to get some distance between yourself and the station before sending it to the group chat.
You: Jester told me to keep it interesting and the prices are low enough... Is that entertaining enough for you?
Pierrot: My Lady?
Jester: I didn't take you for such a fool as to give us a beacon of your location
Doctor: Such an unpredictable subject...
Ticket Taker: An inconvenience is more accurate. I told you she'd pull a stupid stunt like this
Harlequn's was the most concerning. It came a minute after the others and was a photo of the very station with a caption "Nowhere left to run... Since you can't escape anyway, you might as well review the texts I sent you while waiting"
Such a cocky text. It deserves an equally arrogant response:
You: dumbass. You'd think I'd send you a pic from my actual location? Try again:)
★☆★
The forest was a stupid idea after all... You'd think that they all would stick to the city... The actual place you'd most likely to be at... But somehow, Harlequin and you had both ended up in the forest. In the exact same spot. Cool...
His eyes glimmer a menacing green in the dark, like two emeralds. You take a step back, contemplating whether running back was still on the table. Probably not anymore... His agility was something to be envious of.
"Looks like I win, and I'm here to claim my prize"
You purse your lips.
"Technically, you still didn't catch me." You state stubbornly.
"Really? You still insist on not loosing? Hah... Let's wrap this up quickly and get to the fun part, what do you say, hm? What would you count as me catching you?"
If you were going to loose, you might as well make the loss fun for yourself, "You'd probably have to pin me down or wrap your arms around me."
His grin widens, "Oh how I love when you get so bold, my dear," he takes a slow deliberate step towards you, savouring the moment, no doubt, "Let's not make a technicality halt us then."
Neither of you get a chance to get much further, as Harlequin gets struck in the shoulder by a dagger. You yelp in surprise and look around in alarm before spotting a grim looking Pierrot. And he has at least a few more daggers on hand.
"Pierrot... Right on cue to ruin the moment... If I felt more charitable I'd have suggested you join in, but I don't share"
Before you can so much as blink Pierrot is on Harlequin. They merge into a blur of taunts and fists and maybe knives.
You take a tentative step back. They don't notice - too engrossed.
"I'll uh... Leave you guys to it" you give the two fighting figures a thumbs up before running out of the forest.
Technicalities fucking matter
★☆★
You halted only for a few minutes, to catch your breath, and on a rooftop, no less. How in hell did Ticket Taker manage to find you that quickly... You would never comprehend it.
He stood, hands behind his back, calmly surveying as you desperately intake the cold night air. Your whole body felt heavy and tired, so your rather less than graceful leaning on the railing could be excused. It took you embarrassingly longer than it should have to spot him. In fact, you only noticed his presence once he placed his jacket over your shoulders.
The sudden grounding heaviness of it startled you. Your legs almost gave out under you.
It was stupid to think you'd get even a few minutes of a reprieve. With shaking arms you pushed yourself from the railing, stumbling, but ready to run at a moment's notice, he nodded in acknowledgement.
"I wouldn't do that, dearest"
You frown, "Of course you wouldn't want me to start running. I'm easier to catch if I don't"
"You look too tired to even make it down the stairs. It would be advisable to rest"
You heart was still pounding in your chest - undecided whether from all the running, the jumpscare he gave you or from having his jacket over your shoulders, while he stood mere centimetres away from you.
He surveyed the night city, while you were still catching your breath. Now that the adrenaline and the constant anxious pounding in your skull over getting caught subsided, you were immensely grateful for his jacket. Only now did you notice how chilly the air was and how absolutely frozen you felt. You huddled the jacket tighter around your frame.
He glanced at his pocket watch, "Rest time is over. Now, we shall proceed with what I have planned for this eventuality" his lips stretched into a smile, as his gloved hand reached towards you.
Before he could touch you, you pushed off the railing, taking a few steps back.
"Tsk. Didn't I tell you that obedience looks better on you? I shall be disappointed if we waste precious time here because of you"
You were eyeing the exits, your mind running ten miles a second, coming up with escape plans and routes. But help and an opportunity of escape came from the least expected source.
"No need for such haste, Bil," a dark hand fell on Ticket Taker's shoulder. He seemed startled at it and at the silky words of the speaker.
You were already inching yourself towards the exit. Jester crossed the distance, halting your escape and blocking you from Ticket Taker with one arm.
"Jester? I thought we were above such petty squabbles, unlike certain other members of the troupe"
"Rest assured, dear friend, we are. Unfortunately, those very members of the troupe left quite a mess. It must be dealt with."
You take your chances where you can:
"Nice move, Jester, send him away to deal with the mess to have your way with me unobstructed"
Jester narrowed his eyes at you, but snapped his attention back to Ticket Taker:
"Really now, Jester? The girl was mine... And I do not appreciate my schedule being interfered with"
You leave them to discuss it alone. It'll buy you a minute tops - they really are above petty squabbles and can easily spot your attempts to sow discord... But you'll take what you can get... Besides, a busy street is right around here somewhere. Getting lost in the crowd is exactly what you need right now...
You feel two pairs of eyes burn into your back as you disappear amongst strangers and street lights.
★☆★
The two figures on the rooftop sighed at your departure into the night. The taller one clad in dark purple turned to the other:
"I didnt expect her to be so stubborn in her escape. One could think she'd be smart enough to recognise this game for what it is."
A beat of silence.
"You don't think she truly believes we'd devour her? She should know by now that we have no such inclinations towards her"
"Hmm, our inclinations towards her are..." Jester gestured vaguely, searching for a word, before settling on: "Different. That is true..."
"Perhaps your attempt at humour earlier frightened her" Ticket Taker ponders, a quiet jab at his friend
"I think we have simply miscalculated."
"Miscalculated? You?" There is incredulity in his tone
"Our darling Y/n is a bit more clueless and has a far deeper competitive streak than I imagined... Still, makes the victory that much more sweeter."
★☆★
You shivered as the sky slowly turned from midnight to a dark violet, soon to be rosy with sunrise. The jacket Ticket Taker so courteously lent you - what a gentleman - provided meager warmth as you huddled it tighter around you. You walked the empty streets, briefly wondering if the monsters have given up on finding you.
You shoot them a quick "given up yet?" text and see 5 typing bubbles. A few second later you receive your responses:
"Of course not, My Lady" - Pierrot, ever so sweet.
"No, but you should... If you let me get you now, I promise to be merciful~" - Harlequin, the flirt he is...
"Fascinating confidence for someone right within my reach" - Jester, his mysterious and thinly veiled threats that sent your heart racing just like his compliments and affection did. He truly had a way with words.
"No. I have quite a lot in mind I want to do which would require your assistance" - Doctor, ever so blunt, so forward with his intentions
"You have already taken more time out of our schedule than you ought to. Let's not prolong the inevitable, dearest. Now, be a good girl" - Ticket Taker, he can be so uptight... But just as charming when he wants to be
They were persistent. And you've had a lot of close run-ins throughout the night. They remained ever so determined to get you.
You smile softly at the memories. You are rather fond of them. Perhaps fondness is too weak of a word... With the cool night air and sky the colour of violets another word burrows it's way into your mind - Love. It startles you slightly... But settles in so naturally in your mind you can't refute it.
The game is coming to a closure. A shame. It was fun... It would be nice to maybe watch the sunset rise on some rooftop and then show up to the circus beaming with victory. Or maybe it would be more fun to... Let one of them catch you... After all, it's not a complete loss for you if you let them. And there just might be one who really deserves a win...
