And what I mean by that is recieving pain is not a passive role

It takes a lot of focus and mental energy to process that kind of intense stimuli. Learning how to translate pain into pleasure is a skill. Its something you develop over time

So if you're ever in a scene, and the pain your recieving is just... pain... its okay to stop, take a break, negotiate a different kind of scene , or do whatever you need to do

Take your time learning to process pain, and learning what kind of pain you like. You are still valid as a sub and as a masochist no matter where you are on that personal journey

adding on, it's also OK if the pain isn't pleasure if that's what you want. not all masochism is transmuting pain into pleasure, sometimes it's just letting yourself experience pain for whatever it is in that moment. sometimes it's desiring the unpleasantness, the difficulty, the "grit-and-bare-it." there may be days where what you're desiring isn't pleasure, BUT pain, discomfort, or worse. you still absolutely need to know your limits, and you need to communicate to your Dom/top about how you're feeling throughout and you shouldn't sit through pain that feels like there's something -wrong- or unexpectedly injurious—but sometimes what you're looking for are the "bad" sensations, sometimes you want the worst of it. there's other examples to be found along this line of thinking in other forms of play, as well. when my boy and I do rape scenes, he isn't wanting to -feign- overwhelm/overstimulation/disgust, he wants to actually feel those things. He wants to not want it. And then he wants to be taken anyway. He isn't playacting hating it, he often actively hates what I'm doing, either because it's more than he can stand, or he's overstimulated, or it's pushing past his physical limits, etc. And that's what he desires from the experience ! he desires the true experience of not liking what's happening to him and having me take it anyway.

similarly, you don't have to transmute your pain or discomfort as a recipient of pain/violence/etc. maybe that's exactly what you want. but everything said about it taking LOTS of focus and energy to process the stimuli of pain is true in this case, as well ! just don't feel like the standard is that you process it as pleasure. processing it can simply mean you're able to experience it, contextualize it, think about it in relation to the self, and past sensory experiences... as a sadomasochist with incredibly bad chronic pain, so often we're taking our pain and taking a step back from it and doing our best to examine it. You can do this process and disembody/disassociate, or you can root deeper into your body and all the things it's experienced. it's up to you how you want to process your pain.
